Abstract

ABSTRACTCarrying capacity is defined as the ability of aquatic environment to support the life organism in that area. This study aimed to assess the aquatic carrying capacity of the Perupuk Lake for extensive fishing. The carrying capacity was determined based on primary productivity using the chlorophyll concentration, which is indicating the existence of phytoplankton in waters. A study was conducted in June-July 2019 in Perupuk Lake. There were 3 stations, namely station 1 (inlet area), station 2 (in the middle of  lake) and station 3 (the end of the lake). In each station, there were 2 sampling points, in the surface (0.15 m) and 2 Secchi (0.90 m). Sampling were conducted 3 times, once/week. Water quality parameters measured were transparency, temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, CO2, nitrate, phosphate, and chlorophyll-a concentration. Results shown water quality parameters were as follows: concentration of chlorophyll-a was 7.32-8.65 µg/L, transparency 45-50 cm, temperature 28-30oC, pH 5, dissolved oxygen 5.35-6.4 mg/L, CO2  7.32-14.64mg/L, phosphate 0.03-0.06 mg/L, and nitrate 0.12-0.0.18 mg/L. Based on chlorophyll-a concentration, carrying capacity of the Perupuk Lake for extensive fishing was 0.906 tons/year.Keywords :Oxbow lake, primary productivity, phytoplankton, water quality, aquatic

ABSTRACTPeriphyton is a sessile microscopic organism that attach on submerged substrates. A research aims to determine the type and abundance of periphyton attached in theusedtyre pieces placed in the Air Hitam River substrate has been carried out in April-May 2018. There were three sampling stations, namely S1 (in the upstream), S2 (in the middle) and S3 (in the downstream). Samplings were conducted once/week for a 3 weeks period. The periphyton samples are brushed from the used tyre substrates (8 x 6) cm2. The number of tyre pieces in the S1, S2 and S3 were 12, 9, and 6 pieces respectively. Water quality parameter measured were water current, temperature, transparency, pH, dissolved oxygen, free carbon dioxide, nitrate, and phosphate. Results shown that there were 29 types of periphyton present and they were belonged to 4 classes, namely Bacillariophyceae (15 species), Cyanophyceae (3 species), Chlorophyceae (8species), and Euglenaphyceae (3 species). The abundance of periphyton in the tyre substrate in the S1 was 15.119 cells/cm2, in the S2 was 37.245 cells/cm2and in the S3 was 70.029 cells/cm2. The water quality parameters were as follows: water current 0.08-0.46 m/s, transparency:18-29 cm, temperature 29-29.3oC, dissolved oxygen 3.43-3.56 mg/L, free carbon dioxide 6.2-7.9 mg/L, nitrate 0.302-0.529 mg/L, phosphate 0.348-0.542 mg/L. Abstract

Abstract Trophic State Index can be used to determine the trophic state of waters. The TSI was calculated based on physical, chemical and biological parameters and it is more representative for analyzing the trophical state of waters. To understand the trophic state of the Bandar Kayangan Lembah Sari Reservoir, a research has been conducted in March - April 2018. There were four sampling stations, namely station 1 (in the inlet, from the Ambang River), station 2 (in the inlet from the Merbau River), station 3 (in the middle of the lake) and station 4 (in the dam). In each station there were three sampling points, in the surface, in the middle of water column, and in the base of the river. Sampling were conducted 3 times, once/week. Water quality parameter measured were chlorophyll-a, total phosphorus, transparency, temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, and free carbondioxide. Trophic status was calculated based on Carlson’s Trophic State Index (TSI). The water quality parameter values were as follows: transparency 65.17-74.33 cm, total phosphorus 0.20-0.54 mg/L, chlorophyll-a 13.76-19.56 μg/L, depth 148.67-485 cm, temperature 27.33-29.33oC, pH 5, dissolved oxygen 4.10-7.69 mg/L, and free carbondioxide 3.32-7.32 mg/L. Trophic State Index value of the Bandar Kayangan Lembah Sari Reservoir was 68.17-72.25, and it indicates that the Bandar Kayangan water is inmedium to heavy eutrophic condition. Keywords:Ambang River, Merbau River, Carlson’sTrophic State Index, Water Quality

Abstract

Samsam swamp is located in the peat swamp area and flooded during rainy season. A research aims to understand the type and abundance of zooplankton in the Samsam swamp, has been carried out in March 2016. There were 4 stations, namely S1 is in the upstream (almost no human activity); S2 (around palm plantation); S3 (around the newly planted palm plantation) and S4 (far from palm plantation). Sampling were conducted 3 times, once/week. Results shown that zooplankton in the Samsam Swamp was consisted of 5 Classes (14 species). The most common species was crustacean (4 species). The average of zooplankton abundance was around 194-833 organisms/L, species diversity index (H’) was 2,573-3,596, equatibility index (E) was 0.66-0.92, and dominance index (C) was 0.089-0.274. While the water quality parameters were as follows: temperature: 30-320C, transparency: 30-40 cm, depth: 83-114 cm, pH: 4-5, CO2: 8.66-9.32 mg/L, DO:3.96-4.65 mg/L, nitrate:0.45-0.58 mg/L and phosphate:0.36-0.56 mg/L. Based on data obtained it can be concluded that zooplankton diversity was medium, nodominant speciesand the water quality is able to support the life of aquatic organisms.Keyword :Zooplankton, Kandis Sub-District, Samsam Swamp

Abstrak Many activities in the Bakuok Lake contribute the input of organic and anorganic matter that affects the nutrient concentration and increasing the growth of phytoplankton. A research  has been conducted in June-July 2019. There were three sampling points, in the inlet, in the middle of the lake, and in the surface (0,15 m) and 2 Secchi depth (1,74 m). Samplings were conducted 3 times, once/week. Water quality parameters measured were temperature, transparency, depth, pH, dissolved oxygen, CO2, nitrate and phosphate. Results shown that there were 33 species of phytoplankton that were belonged to 7 classes, namely Chlorophyceae (15 spesies), Cyanophyceae (2 spesies), Bacillariaphyceae (5 spesies), Euglenophyceae (3 spesies), Zygnematophyceae (5 spesies), Trebouxiophyceae(2 spesies), and Cryptophyceae (1 spesies). The phytoplankton abundance of the Bakuok Lake was 89.689-100.491 cells/L. The most common type ofphytoplankton presentwasAnkistrodesmus  falcatus. Water quality parameters values were as follow, temperature was 29-310C, depth was 4-6 m, pH was 5, dissolved oxygen was 6.57-7.57 mg/L, CO2 was 9.37-13.86 mg/L, nitrate was 0.0190-0.0333 mg/L and phosphate was 0.0354-0.0575 mg/L. Based on the type and abundance of phytoplankton, it can be concluded that the Bakuok Lake can be categorized as mesotrophic. Keywords :Oxbow Lake, Water Quality, Ankistrodesmus falcatus, Mesotrophic
