Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of the entrepreneurship program at Sunan Drajat Islamic Boarding School and its impact on enhancing students’ economic independence and local economic growth. Using a qualitative approach with a case study design, data were collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, and document analysis. The findings reveal that the pesantren’s entrepreneurship program—covering service, industrial, retail, and technology sectors—has successfully improved students’ technical, managerial, and digital skills. The integration of entrepreneurship education with Islamic values also strengthens students’ ethical behavior and spiritual character in business practices. Moreover, pesantren business units contribute significantly to the local economy through job creation, collaboration with micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and the strengthening of community-based value chains. However, several challenges remain, including limited capital, managerial literacy, and digital infrastructure. The study highlights the importance of strengthening external networks, alumni support, and digital transformation as key strategies for sustaining pesantren-based entrepreneurship. These findings are expected to serve as a reference for policymakers and pesantren administrators in developing sustainable Islamic value-based economic empowerment models.

Abstract

The global digital economy presents a formidable challenge to traditional institutions, demanding a paradigm shift that balances cultural preservation with economic innovation. This study investigates the construction of an ethical and sustainable Digital Entrepreneurial Ecosystem (DEE) for Indonesian Islamic boarding schools (pesantren), institutions central to the nation’s social and religious fabric. Grounded in a philosophical synthesis of Indonesia’s People’s Economy (Ekonomi Kerakyatan) principles and Islamic ethics, this research addresses the critical nexus of traditional values and modern digital transactional demands. Employing a qualitative multi-case study of five influential pesantren in East Java, the research identifies the core components and strategic pathways for this digital transition. The findings reveal that a successful ecosystem architecture rests on three pillars: Ethical-Spiritual Governance, leveraging the moral authority of leadership (Kyai) and community trust; Socio-Digital Collaboration, which translates immense social capital into structured digital networks; and Inclusive Capacity Building, which creates accessible pathways for digital literacy and entrepreneurship. This study critiques the conventional technology-centric ecosystem models, proposing a novel, values-driven framework that positions pesantren as architects of a more equitable and culturally resonant digital future. It contributes a philosophically robust model for digital entrepreneurship that prioritizes holistic community welfare (falah) over profit-centric metrics, offering a significant contribution to the discourse on ethical technology adoption in religious communities.

Abstract

This study proposes an innovative financing model that integrates waqf (awqaf) instruments with venture capital principles in response to the funding gap within the pesantren entrepreneurial ecosystem. The background of the problem indicates that although pesantren have significant economic potential, access to capital that is both Shariah-compliant and growth-oriented remains limited. The methodology employed is a qualitative multi-method approach, which includes an analysis of contemporary Islamic finance literature, case studies of productive waqf models, and the development of a conceptual framework through systematic modeling. The results and discussion demonstrate that the proposed Awqaf-Driven Venture Capital (Awqaf-VC) model has the potential to overcome traditional financing limitations by combining the perpetual nature of waqf with the strategic approach of venture capital. This framework is supported by a juridical analysis of Law No. 41 of 2004 concerning Waqf and the Financial Services Authority Regulation (POJK) No. 25 of 2023 concerning the Operation of Venture Capital Companies and Sharia Venture Capital Companies, which legally facilitates such a structure. The conclusion of this study is that the Awqaf-VC model can serve as a sustainable financing alternative that not only enhances the economic scalability of pesantren but also strengthens Shariah compliance in the digital age. The policy recommendation put forward is the development of derivative regulations that specifically govern the mechanisms for governance, risk mitigation, and fiscal incentives for nazhirs and managers of waqf-based Sharia venture capital funds.

Abstract

Indonesia's national land certificate digitization, while promising administrative efficiency, creates a compelling paradox within its unique socio-religious landscape, particularly for pesantren, where formal ownership intersects with religious endowments (waqf) and communal systems. This study investigates the critical gap between this technocratic initiative and the principles of distributive justice, asking how digitization impacts pesantren amidst complex tenure realities. Employing a qualitative philosophical-empirical approach, it integrates theoretical analysis of Rawlsian, capabilities, and recognitional justice with a systematic review of legal documents, digital literacy data, and pesantren distribution. The findings reveal that the standardized digital framework generates procedural injustices because it ignores profound rural digital literacy divides and violates recognitional justice by failing to accommodate traditional waqf arrangements. Consequently, it disproportionately advantages larger urban institutions, marginalizing smaller rural pesantren and undermining equitable distribution. While limited to a theoretical-empirical synthesis, this research offers novelty by proposing an integrated ethical framework to reconcile technology with fairness, advocating for human-centric design, digital literacy investment, adapted land categories, and restorative mechanisms, thus ensuring digitization advances, rather than impedes, justice.

Abstract

This study analyzes the entrepreneurial strategies employed by Islamic boarding schools to achieve economic independence, focusing on the case of Sunan Drajat Islamic Boarding Schools in East Java. Framed within the concept of a Sharia-compliant ecosystem, this research utilizes a qualitative case study methodology to investigate the integration of spiritual values with modern business practices. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, direct observation of the Islamic boarding school’s diverse business units, and analysis of institutional documents. The findings reveal a multi-faceted strategy that combines cost leadership, achieved through a cooperative structure, with a differentiation strategy rooted in Islamic principles and community trust. Key success factors include the development of a robust business incubator, a structured santripreneur (santri entrepreneur) development model, and the cultivation of a business ecosystem that emphasizes stakeholder collaboration, professional management, and clear financial accountability. This study contributes a replicable framework for other Islamic boarding schools aiming to build sustainable, Sharia-compliant economic ecosystems, demonstrating that religious institutions can serve as powerful engines for community-based economic development and social empowerment. The model at Sunan Drajat Islamic boarding schools illustrates a successful synthesis of religious values and entrepreneurial acumen, offering significant implications for both theory and practice in Islamic entrepreneurship.

Abstract

This study examines the transformation of dormitory-based Arabic language learning in developing students’ communicative competence at Sunan Drajat Islamic Boarding School, Lamongan. It explores the shift from classroom-centered instruction toward environment-based communicative learning through the implementation of bi’ah lughawiyah in dormitory settings. Previous studies have mainly viewed bi’ah lughawiyah as a supporting language environment or examined its impact on specific language skills, with limited attention to its role as an integrated pedagogical system. This study employed a qualitative case study design. Data were collected through moderate participant observation, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis involving students, dormitory supervisors, and Arabic language teachers. Data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña. The findings reveal a pedagogical transformation characterized by the integration of formal instruction, structured bi’ah lughawiyah, intensive social interaction, and the development of students’ communicative competence through sustained input, meaningful interaction, and contextualized language use. The study’s primary contribution is the Integrative Communicative Immersion Model, which extends previous research by conceptualizing dormitory-based Arabic learning as an integrated pedagogical system in which formal instruction, structured language environment, and sustained social interaction function as interconnected components of communicative language acquisition. This model provides a conceptual framework for designing and managing environment-based Arabic language learning in Islamic boarding schools.
