Abstract

Housing designs should not only consider aspects of form and function but should also pay attention to gender perspectives. This study aims to examine the influence of gender perspectives on the architectural design of residential housing. Employing a mixed method of a qualitative approach and a questionnaire-based online survey, this research explores user perceptions and preferences in applying gender-sensitive approaches to housing design. The findings reveal that gender-sensitive approaches are highly preferred in housing designs, with a particular emphasis on accommodating the inhabitants’ needs. The approach effectively addresses the specific needs of masculine and feminine individuals as inhabitants, which can significantly improve the quality of life within the house. This research emphasizes the urge to incorporate a gender perspective as one of the design considerations to create inclusive houses that are responsive to the needs of individuals of diverse genders.

Abstract

Urbanization is associated with increased psychological problems among urban dwellers, including university students. Streets, as public social spaces, can play a crucial role in reducing loneliness and improving mental health and resilience. Convivial street interactions, such as meeting strangers, can build social capital, increase community engagement, and enhance social well-being. This research aims to explore university students' perspectives on the streets they frequent daily and the impact of these streets on their mental health. Employing a mixed-methods approach, an online questionnaire with both open- and close-ended questions was distributed to 100 university students in Bandung. Results indicate that 79% of respondents perceive street interactions as positive as enhancing their mood, while 21% view them negatively. Despite this, interactions with strangers on the streets are infrequent. The study finds a significant correlation between street interactions and mental health, with 73% of respondents reporting moderate to high-stress levels linked to low interaction frequency, particularly with vendors/sellers. The poor physical conditions of streets and their primary role as vehicular passageways discourage on-street interactions. The findings underscore the importance of designing streets as "bumping places" and third places with human-centric designs to improve the mental health of university students in Bandung.

Abstract

The work environment has a great influence on motivation, performance and individual willingness to stay in their workspace. It will affect individual intention to move to a better place according to them. This study aims to determine the relationship between discomfort factors on the working environment with the intention to move from a workspace based on the individual indoor worker perception. This study uses qualitative methods and a grounded theory approach with non-random sampling and online questionnaires for data collection. The results revealed that there were five main categories of discomfort in the workspace, that is thermal discomfort, poor interior design, unsupported working atmosphere, inadequate indoor facilities, and poor indoor lighting intensity. Among those five categories, thermal discomfort has become the thing that most influences an individual's desire to move from their workspace. It can be concluded that there are three groups of factors that represent work inconvenience, namely: factors that are very influential, tend to be influential and have less effect on individual inconvenience to their work environment

Abstract

Worship is essential to every human being, but finding a house with a particular prayer room is still rare. This study seeks to capture the various phenomena of worship in the dwelling, consisting of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. In general, the choice of space for prayer at home stems from intrinsic motivation from within. This research seeks to find extrinsic motivation, a characteristic of the environment that is then analyzed and compiled into design principles. This research was conducted using a qualitative grounded theory approach. The data were collected by distributing open questionnaires freely (non-random sampling). The data obtained from 192 respondents were analyzed using content analysis, which was carried out in three stages: open coding, axial coding, and selective coding. The investigation found seven (seven) designs for unique prayer rooms in the house. These principles include comfort, privacy, tranquility, minimal distraction, flexibility, cleanliness, and closeness. This study also revealed that a particular room for worship could increase religious activities at home and interaction between family members in spiritual and religious aspects

Abstract

Public open spaces are essential for sustainable urban development, offering places for recreation, social interaction, and physical activities. These spaces, designed by local governments, often attract both local residents and tourists. However, many public open spaces fail to fully adhere to infrastructure regulations set by the Ministry of Public Works and Housing (PUPR), highlighting the need for improved planning and design. This study aims to explore community preferences for visiting urban public open spaces to provide insights for better design and management. A qualitative, exploratory approach using grounded theory was employed, with data collected through open-ended online questionnaires distributed via non-random sampling. The responses were analyzed using content analysis. The findings reveal three primary categories of preferences: conception, physical-spatial attributes, and activities. The conception category includes elements such as tranquility, familiarity, attractiveness, novelty, and enjoyment. Physical-spatial preferences focus on accessibility, safety, cleanliness, spaciousness, and the natural environment. Activities, the most significant category, include learning, playing, culinary experiences, sports, recreation, relaxation, and social interaction.Activities received the highest score (66 points), followed by physical-spatial attributes (57 points) and conception (30 points). These results underscore the importance of designing spaces that support diverse activities while maintaining accessibility, safety, and environmental appeal. Recommendations for policymakers and urban planners include enhancing facilities, ensuring cleanliness and safety, and promoting inclusivity. By aligning public open space design with community preferences, cities can create vibrant spaces that meet the needs of urban residents and improve their quality of life.

Abstract

Environment (external factors) and user attributes (internal factors) affect the user's response to the environment. This study aims to uncover how the quality of the environment in high school as an external factor and student motivation as an internal factor affects the academic performance of the students. The research was conducted with qualitative and quantitative approach. Data were collected by survey using an online questionnaire. From the regression analysis, it was found that the dimensions of external factors of "classroom order", "social interaction and supervision" and "air quality" further increased the effectiveness of student learning rather than internal dimensions of "resilience and capacity building". Meanwhile, the decrease in air quality, noise, and environmental pollution can cause student learning disruption. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the learning environment plays an important role in shaping the effectiveness of student learning.

Abstract

The Braga area is one of the cultural heritage tourist destinations in Bandung with the attraction of its colonial architecture. The emergence of new buildings in the region is presented without giving attention to the surrounding colonial buildings. The visitor’s perspective on the Braga area is an important basis in regional growth and development. This study aims to find the perspective of visitors based on the correlation between their attraction and expectations of the Braga region. The method used in this study was mixed methods (qualitative-quantitative), and data collection was carried out using a survey through a freely distributed online questionnaire (snowball non-random sampling). The collected data is then analyzed qualitatively using content analysis and quantitatively using principal component analysis, factor analysis, and multivariate correlation analysis. The results of the study revealed the existence of two perspectives, namely appreciative and recreational. The appreciative perspective sees Braga as having an attractive heritage of historical buildings and hopes that Braga will become a conservation area. While the recreational perspective regards Braga as an entertainment area that is unique and hopes for the commodification of the Braga area.

Abstract

The provision of urban green areas, especially urban parks, has been decreasing as higher demand for public facilities in the city. Urban parks, however, provide many benefits for surrounding residents that require effort to sustain them. The current study wants to identify how grouping (typology) of urban parks was based on visitor’s attitudes toward urban parks (sense of place). The data were collected online from the questionnaire, and the data of 211 respondents were collected. The data were then processed quantitatively by open coding, axial coding, and selective coding analyses. The result shows that there were two groups of urban parks based on visitor’s attitudes; they are restorative parks and forest parks. The restorative park can provide restoration benefits for daily visitors, while forest parks can provide not only restoration effects but also visitor’s hobby activities. Based on the duration of the visit to those parks, the level of visitor’s sense of place in the forest park is higher than in the restorative park. The role of the architect and urban planner is needed to design urban parks that can develop visitor’s sense of place, such as providing a place for attraction, physical activity, walking, photography, relaxation, and enjoy the atmosphere.
