Abstract

The enactment of the Aceh Governance Law (UUPA) allows the state’s intervention to the nature of Islamic boarding schools in Aceh, which is originally connected to Aceh’s socio-cultural system into the formality of the State’s administrative structure. This article utilized a triangulation methodology, which involved the integration of document analysis, observation, and in-depth interviews. The study generated data from participants located within the dayah, including 2 teungku chik (leadership), 2 teachers, and 5 students; and participants located outside the dayah, including 2 academics, 2 social figures, and a director of Department of Dayah Education. The findings of our study indicated that the institutional frameworks of dayah had undergone modernization, with significant improvements in infrastructure, integration of curricula, enhancement of human resources (teungku-teacher and santri-student), and expansion of collaborations and networks. This modification granted the dayah of Aceh a more favorable standing within the Acehnese social hierarchy. This study highlighted that dayah institutions retained their cultural foundation as centers of Islamic instruction despite the changes they experienced. Instead, the incorporation of State action has led to the establishment of institutional and intellectual prosperity; it appeared that state intervention was more of an opportunity than a threat.

Abstract

Ulama in Aceh face significant challenges in integrating gender perspectives into their da'wah practices. The dominance of patriarchal culture and limited gender literacy often leads to the reinforcement rather than the deconstruction of gender stereotypes. This study employs a socio-religious approach to examine how ulama, as central figures in society, simultaneously sustain and contest social constructions that restrict gender roles—using qualitative methods including in-depth interviews, participant observation, and analysis of da'wah documents. The study finds that da'wah narratives frequently reproduce socially and religiously legitimized gender stereotypes. Nevertheless, some ulama have initiated efforts to challenge these norms by offering more inclusive and gender-just interpretations, aligning with the spirit of rahmatan lil 'alamin. The findings suggest ulama's role extends beyond preserving traditional values to acting as agents of change who can facilitate social transformation through gender-responsive da'wah. Achieving such a transformation requires synergy between ulama, communities, and progressive socio-religious policies to balance religious principles with social justice. This study underscores the importance of continuous dialogue and collaboration among ulama, educational institutions, and women's rights advocates to promote inclusivity within religious contexts. By integrating gender-sensitive approaches into religious discourse and curricula, sustainable progress toward equality can be fostered. Ultimately, the research emphasises that ulama's engagement in these efforts is vital for building a more inclusive, equitable society in Aceh and potentially beyond.

Abstract

This article reconceptualizes da’wah as a civilizational infrastructure that integrates spiritual guidance with intellectual and technological advancement within the Aceh–Türkiye transregional network. Using an exploratory qualitative approach, the study draws on archival letters, classical Islamic texts, and ethnographic insights from pesantren, majlis taklīm, and Sufi ṭarīqas to explore how religious devotion historically intersected with knowledge production and social transformation. The research finds that sixteenth-century exchanges between Aceh and the Ottoman Empire included both religious manuscripts and maritime innovations, underpinned by a shared Islamic worldview. Contemporary Acehnese pesantren continue this legacy by combining traditional Islamic education with subjects such as astronomy, mathematics, and governance. The study introduces the concept of “civilizational da’wah” to highlight its function as a dynamic system of intellectual mobility, ethical leadership formation, and social resilience—beyond ritual preaching. This model advances Islamic epistemology by integrating civilizational theory and network methodologies. Practically, it offers a framework for educators, policymakers, and religious leaders to embed spiritual depth and intellectual vitality into Islamic education while shaping future-oriented fields such as Islamic fintech, AI ethics, and global Islamic governance.

Abstract

The integration of Qur’anic principles into modern government systems represents a critical area of inquiry in contemporary Islamic governance studies. Muslim-majority countries have sought to align governance practices with Islamic values while addressing the challenges of modern state systems. This research examines the implementation of Qur’anic principles, such as justice (adl), consultation (shura), and accountability (muhasabah), in the governance frameworks of selected Muslim countries. The study explores how these principles are operationalized within modern political and legal systems to balance Islamic ideals with global governance standards. The research aims to assess the extent to which Qur’anic principles influence contemporary governance structures and identify best practices and challenges in their application. Employing a qualitative case study methodology, the study analyzes governance models in Malaysia, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia through primary legal documents, government policies, and interviews with policymakers and scholars. The findings reveal significant variations in the operationalization of Qur’anic principles across the selected countries, reflecting differences in political systems, historical contexts, and interpretations of Islamic law. The study concludes that effectively integrating Qur’anic principles into modern governance requires context-specific approaches that align with both Islamic teachings and contemporary governance standards.

Abstract

The rise of social media has revolutionized communication and presented new opportunities for Islamic propagation (da’wah). As digital platforms become integral to modern life, they offer unprecedented potential for disseminating Islamic teachings to a global audience. However, the effectiveness of digital da’wah depends on strategic engagement, content quality, and adaptability to diverse audiences. This study aims to explore effective strategies for spreading Islam through social media, identifying key factors that influence reach, engagement, and impact. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining content analysis of 200 da’wah-related posts across major social media platforms with surveys and interviews of 150 Islamic content creators and their audiences. Quantitative data measured engagement metrics, while qualitative insights explored perceptions of effectiveness and challenges faced by content creators. The findings indicate that successful digital da’wah strategies prioritize authenticity, audience interactivity, and relevance to contemporary issues. Visual storytelling, short video formats, and consistent posting schedules were identified as highly effective tactics. Challenges such as combating misinformation and addressing audience diversity were also highlighted. The study concludes that social media can be a powerful tool for Islamic propagation if utilized with strategic planning and cultural sensitivity. Future efforts should focus on capacity-building for content creators and fostering collaborative networks.

Abstract

The discipline of Kal?m (Islamic theology) has historically served as a framework for addressing theological controversies, utilizing rational discourse to harmonize scriptural interpretation with intellectual inquiry. In the modern era, theological debates concerning issues such as faith, ethics, and the reconciliation of science and religion have intensified, necessitating renewed exploration of Kal?m as a method for resolving these challenges. This study examines the contribution of Kal?m in addressing contemporary theological controversies through rational debates and intellectual engagement. A qualitative approach was employed, combining historical analysis and textual study of classical Kal?m works with case studies of modern applications in theological discourse. Data were collected through critical analysis of primary texts and interviews with contemporary theologians and scholars actively engaging in rational debates on theological issues. The findings demonstrate that Kal?m provides a robust intellectual foundation for navigating contemporary theological controversies. Its emphasis on rational argumentation fosters constructive dialogue between traditional Islamic perspectives and modern intellectual paradigms. The study concludes that Kal?m remains a vital tool for resolving contemporary theological controversies, bridging the gap between tradition and modernity.

Abstract

Islamic philosophy offers profound insights into metaphysical problems, with the works of Ibn Sina (Avicenna) and Al-Ghazali standing as pivotal contributions. These scholars addressed foundational metaphysical issues, such as the nature of existence, causality, and the relationship between reason and revelation. This study investigates the metaphysical perspectives of Ibn Sina and Al-Ghazali, highlighting their intellectual interplay and enduring influence on Islamic and global philosophy. The research aims to compare and critically analyze their positions on key metaphysical problems, focusing on their interpretations of existence (wujud), causality, and the divine attributes. Employing a textual and comparative analysis method, the study examines primary sources, including Ibn Sina’s Al-Shifa and Al-Isharat wa al-Tanbihat, alongside Al-Ghazali’s Tahafut al-Falasifa and Al-Iqtisad fi al-I’tiqad. Secondary sources are utilized to contextualize their arguments within broader philosophical discourse. The findings reveal that Ibn Sina’s rationalist metaphysics emphasizes a hierarchical understanding of existence, while Al-Ghazali critiques such rationalism, emphasizing theological orthodoxy and divine omnipotence. This interplay demonstrates a dynamic intellectual tension that shaped the trajectory of Islamic metaphysics.
