Abstract

Antibacterial agents are substances used to eliminate microorganisms, especially those harmful to humans. These antibacterial compounds can be directly extracted from plants, where the extracts contain secondary metabolite compounds with antibacterial activity. The antibacterial testing is conducted on gram-positive bacteria, such as Propionibacterium, Staphylococcus, and others. The research method employed is a literature review of 10 national and international articles published within the last 10 years. The cited articles focus on studies of plants with potential as antibacterial agents against several gram-positive bacteria, including the extraction solvents used, the metabolite compounds present in the extracts, and their effectiveness based on the inhibition zone diameter and/or minimum inhibitory concentration using the disc diffusion method. Keywords : Antibacterial, Diffusion Discs, Gram Positive, Secondary Metabolites

Abstract

Scenedesmus sp. is a freshwater green alga that functions as an ionic biosorbent and can also be a bioindicator for water contaminated with hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) ion. This study aimed to observe the growth of Scenedesmus sp. exposed to Cr(VI) ion at various concentrations and analyze the remaining Cr(VI) ion that did not undergo biosorption by microalgae. This research was conducted on Scenedesmus sp. microalgae growth media using five bioreactors, each with a different Cr(VI) ion exposure concentration. The remaining ion in the growth media was analyzed for its concentration with an ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer at time variations with an interval of two days. Maximum biosorption with exposure to Cr(VI) occurred at a concentration of 1.0 ppm on day 12 of 99.93%. At concentrations of 5.0 ppm and 7.0 ppm, microalgae growth was very poor, indicating the medium was toxic. Keywords: Biosorption, Hexavalent Chromium, Scenedesmus sp, Toxicity

Abstract

The biological absorption of Pb2+ metal by Escherichia coli bacteria has been conducted. This study aims to determine the ability of Escherichia coli bacteria to absorb Pb2+ metal based on variations in Pb2+ exposure concentrations (0, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 ppm) over different exposure times (days) and to identify the optimal concentration and time required for Escherichia coli in the biological absorption of Pb2+ metal. The maximum wavelength of the standard Pb2+ solution is 520 nm. Based on the test results, Escherichia coli was able to absorb Pb2+ at varying exposure concentrations (3, 6, 9, 12, 15 ppm) with biosorption percentages of 49.118%, 23.985%, 14.500%, 10.150%, and 7.808%, respectively. The optimal concentration and time required for Escherichia coli to absorb Pb2+ occurred on the 3rd day with a Pb2+ exposure concentration of 3 ppm. Abstract

The growth of industry in Indonesia, especially in the textile sector, has led to an increase in the production of liquid waste containing heavy metals such as chromium (Cr), lead (Pb), and copper (Cu). These metals can pose significant health risks if they enter the body of living things. To overcome this, one alternative method of reducing liquid waste is to utilize biosorption by bacteria. This study aims to determine the ability of metal absorption by several bacteria, namely Streptococcus mutans, Flavobacterium sp, Pseudomonas sp, and Bacillus subtilis. The results showed that Streptococcus mutans was able to absorb Cr (VI) with a maximum efficiency of 90.80% at a concentration of 5 ppm on the 5th day. While Flavobacterium sp was able to absorb Pb at a maximum of 96% at a concentration of 2 ppm on the 18th day. Pseudomonassp showed maximum uptake of 96.192% for Cr(VI) at 5 ppm on day 14, 36.874% for Pb at 4 ppm on day 16, and 84.447% for Cu(II) at 3 ppm on day 16. Bacillussubtilis showed maximum uptake of 97.42% for Pb at 10 ppm. These findings indicate that bacteria have significant potential for heavy metal biosorption in wastewater treatment. Abstract

Indonesia's current biodiversity makes it something valuable for the community. Especially the use of plants that are used as medicinal materials. This is supported by the content of secondary metabolite compounds found in plants such as flavonoids, phenolics, steroids, saponins, tannins and others. These compounds have antibacterial activity that can be used to inhibit the growth of microbes that harm humans. By conducting a literature study of 10 national and international articles in the last 10 years of publication to review the ability of several plants that have potential as antibacterials. Tests were carried out on Escherichia coli bacteria which included the extract solvent used, the content of metabolite compounds in the extract and its activity based on the inhibition zone diameter value and/or minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). Keywords: Antibacterial, inhibition zone diameter, Escherichia coli, minimum inhibitory concentration, secondary metabolites
