Abstract

To serve the need of potato consumers for the ready good potato, it must be processed through post-harvest . Some of the process is cutting and slicing. The need of post-harvest processing that leads to mechanization and to get the optimum gain and high efficiency, potato screw slicer had to be designed and constructed. The study was conducted with literature study, experiment, observation and testing of the equipment. The effective capacity of the equipment was 51,72 kg/h. Basic cost to be incurred in slicing potato with the equipment was Rp. 199,72/kg in the 1st year, Rp. 199,99/kg in the 2nd year,Rp. 200,26/kg  in  the 3rd, Rp. 200,56/kg in the 4th and Rp. 200,87/kg in the 5th. The equipment will reach the break even point if the amount of slicing potato was 889,,30 kg/year. Net present value of the equipment with an interest rate of7,5% was Rp. 391.040.422,54which meant that the business was feasible to run. The internal rate of return was 49,45%. Abstract

Briquette is one of the biomass fuels which is used as a simple, inexpensive alternative energy source. Biomass used in this research were corncob and tea waste. The aim of this research was to find out the composition of Bio-Carbon Briquette processing from corncob and tea waste and to determine the best Bio one. Testing was conducted by using a non-factorial completely randomized design with parameters of water content, density, calorific value, and ash content. The results of this research showed that the composition of the briquette materials had highly significant effect on water content, density, calorific value, and ash content. The best water content in this research was 2.89% that met Japanese, American, British and Indonesian standards. The Density value was 0.415 g/cm3 which did not meet briquettes of Japanese, America, British and Indonesian standards. The best calorific value in this research was 10052.08 cal/g that met Japanese, American, British and Indonesian standards. The best ash content value in this research was 2.83% that met Japanese, American, British and Indonesian standards. Keywords : briquette, biomass, corncob and tea waste.

Abstract

The process of lemang cooking is very simple and has some weakness that can be minimalised. The purpose of this research was to examine the effect of temperature in vertical typelemang cooking appliance. This research was carried out at Agricultural Engineering Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture USU in April – May 2015 using non factorial randomized block design with three levels, i.e. 95oC, 100oC, and 105oC. Parameters observed were effective capacity and organoleptic values. The results showed that cooking temperature had significant effect on the organoleptic test. But had no significant effect on  the effective capacityof the appliance. Keywords: Glutinous rice, Lemang’s, glutinous rice cooker appliance.

Abstract

Melinjo plant has a very high quality of fiber that found in the inner bark of  the stem that can be made as a rope as a substitute to synthetic ropes that can decrease environmental pollution. The research was aimed to make a fiber rope from the inner  bark of melinjo  stem and to test the endurance of the rope toward a tensile test. The research had been conducted at Agriculture Engineering Laboratory, College of Agriculture, USU and tensile test was conducted at Research Laboratory, College of Engineering, USU in March-July 2015 using spinners simple tool in making the rope and tensile test to determine the strength of the rope toward burden. Parameter  measured were tensile stress, strain, elasticity, ropes deformation, and malleability. The results showed that heterogeneous fiber caused different rope diameter and affect the value of parameters measured. From the ropes test it was found that  average tensile stress was 42.38 N/mm2, strain was 0.3742, ropes deformation was 35.17867 mm, elasticity was 114.1673 N/mm2 and malleability was 37.42 %. Key Words : Natural fiber, rope, inner bark of melinjo stem, spinning, tensile test.

Abstract

Until now, obtain coconut milk was still obtain using conventional method which is hand pressed. Later on, manual coconut milk extractor is develop using hydrolic press system. With the development of science and technology in this modern age, people trying to create or make a new, more efficient and practical equipment. Therefore, in this research, the author tried to ease the extraction of coconut milk by designing coconut milk extractor with screw press system which has larger capacity which be more effective and efficient in coconut extraction. The coconut milk extractor worked by enter shredded coconut into hopper then shredded coconut is carried toward tubular filter contained  screw press. After that  the milk is produced and the dregs out separately. The results showed that the effective capacity of the equipment was 11,25 kg/hour. Primary cost was Rp. 787,022/Kg for the first year, Rp. 792,205/Kg for the second year, Rp. 797,777/Kg for the third year, Rp. 803,769/Kg for the fourth year, and Rp. 810,204/Kg for the fifth year. BEP was 1.238 Kg in the first year, 1.305 Kg in the second year, 1.377 Kg in the third year, 1.454 Kg in the fourth year and 1.537 Kg in the fifth year. The IRR was 45,54%.
