Abstract

Spatial integration in physical boundary design of urban housing The increasing number of residents of a city, the higher level of citizens' need for housing. The community's need for housing is answered by the developer by building housing in several areas. However, the phenomenon that occurs at this time is that the housing development often does not pay attention to the existence of existing settlements first, so that physical boundaries are created with poor physical spatial quality and create barriers between new housing and the surrounding environment. The physical boundaries that frame the city's housing complex certainly lead to the phenomenon of spatial segregation in the surrounding environment. Hence, the main purpose of this journal is to find out the extent of spatial integration that is applied to the physical boundaries of Setra Duta Bandung housing. The discussion method is carried out by analyzing problems and opportunities that arise at the physical boundaries in the study area, synergizing with the study of literature on spatial integration in the physical boundaries of urban housing. During the observations, it was found that the physical boundaries of Setra Duta housing showed spatial segregation with the part of the city that surrounds it. Spatial segregation is created as a result of something physical that causes or clarifies differences. This phenomenon brings negative impacts such as deteriorating the physical quality of spatial and shared space in the housing border area. © 2020 Fauziyyah Sofiyah Radliyatullah, Yohanes Basuki Dwisusanto

Abstract

Spatial patterns are formed based on local wisdom and Karangtengah Hamlet settlement which is located in the cold climate of the mountainous area in Banjarnegara Regency, Central Java has been discovered to have a uniqueness in using the fireplace as the center of its activities. Therefore, this research was conducted to uncover the basic concept of fireplace-based house spatial pattern in this settlement using a qualitative method which involves combining interview, observation, and documentation. The process also involved using 33 houses as the case study with the criterion for selection being the active use of the fireplace. The results showed the placement of fireplace in these houses was influenced by the kinship system and the purpose was to have spatial patterns designed to reduce migration from these settlements to cities.

Abstract

This research investigates the critical role of physical linkage and connectivity in the integration between formal and informal urban areas of the city, as well as recognizes aspects related to physical and social segregation that prevent this integration process. The objective is to understand this role in relation to the viability of integration. Qualitative method describes effectiveness of connectivity and linkage thorough the complexity of interaction between formal and informal areas in the built-form and open space. This research includes two important areas in Bandung, Indonesia, namely, Hegarmanah and Ciumbuleuit. Findings show Hegarmanah as an enclosed configuration with more incidence of controlled areas, through physical barriers, legal restrictions and circulation limitations. Ciumbuleuit presents less controlled areas, encouraging a wider use of public space, a variety of services, commerce, commuting. Interaction between pedestrians and built environment has experienced more adaptation, in a more open configuration. In conclusion, space configuration, borders, limited access and forms of control represent obstructions to the integration process, impairing physical connectivity, encouraging spatial segregation due to isolation and linkage disruption. Integration will be stimulated when space is articulated and able to adapt. Coexistence of seemingly social and physically segregated formal and informal parts of the city can be comprehended when there is a correct interpretation of the role of physical linkage and connectivity through the analysis of space.

Abstract

As a trade center, Semarang Chinatown contributes to developing the economic activities of the city. The expansion of the economic network creates various opportunities through informal activities. This is reflected in the inclusiveness of the local community, using roads as venues of economic activities, especially on Gang Baru Street in Semarang Chinatown. The street connects the neighborhood, accommodates informal activities, and serves as a traditional market. Furthermore, it has been privatized by trading activities from the shophouses and street vendors. The claim trend has commodified the formal use of the street as access infrastructure. Consequently, the differences in formal and informal activities cause the use of road space to be fragmented. Therefore, this study examines the fragmented use of Gang Baru street caused by the segmented informal activity interests. The qualitative method is used for a thorough bottom-up observation of the street’s activities. Various activities are classified based on the street user segmentation by organizational practices and spontaneous community behavior. This categorization is also based on the users’ participatory or antagonistic response to the street’s formal use. The result shows activity diversity portrays a dialectic interest representing the fragmented use of Gang Baru Street.

Abstract

Abstract

This research reveals meaning of “boundary line” due to the precast module system in Seruni 8 block, ‘Rusunawa’ Bumi Cengkareng Indah, Jakarta, Indonesia. The Grounded Theory method, with the type of “constant comparison”, which is a semi-grounded theory, is chosen to express the meaning of the “boundary line” from the residents’ point of view. The coding process in data processing uses computer program Maxqda. The results of this study indicate that well-established relationships between occupants can transform the boundaries of private corridor ownership (individual territory) into joint ownership (communal territory) as a place to socialize and share goods placed in the corridor, and maintain the cleanliness of the corridor together, so that the “boundary line” due to the precast module system for residents of the Seruni 8 block, ‘Rusunawa’ Bumi Cengkareng Indah, Jakarta, does not affect the meaning of the boundaries as the individual territory, because the communal territory is stronger than the “boundary line” due to the precast module system.

Abstract

The informal aspect of daily activities plays a role in shaping the quality of urban architectural design. This is due to the fact that public open space has become a place for all community-based informal activities, thereby, making the public-private sphere a collective spectrum and using the outdoor as a common space for all. These activities, however, have the ability to create a sense of belonging to the urban community towards a place even though they are temporary. An example of this is the Semarang Chinatown area which is a street space being used as a living outdoor space (sense of place). Therefore, this study was conducted to understand the character of the outdoor living room in the street space through the sense of place dimension. This involved using qualitative methods through field observation data to identify the place identity, place attachment, and place dependence. The findings showed that the informal activities reviewed through the sense of place dimension shape the character of the outdoor living room in the street space and this is expected to increase the quality of the street as a public open space in the Semarang Chinatown area.

Abstract

Urban informality is an everyday life phenomenon in Jakarta but has not been extensively discussed, especially in relation to spatial design practice. This is important because formality and informality are not entirely separate but rather interconnected and complementary (Moatasim, 2019). It has also been discovered that on-street informality such as street vending demonstrates the existence and trend of urban space and also acts as the most visible manifestation of the informal economy. Therefore, this research focuses on investigating the integration of urban informality with special attention to its influence on the spatial or architectural aspects. This was achieved through the qualitative method which involves the application of a phenomenological paradigm by participating in the street vending and informal economy on Thamrin 10, Jalan H. Agus Salim, and Jalan Percetakan Negara streets in Jakarta. The results showed that informality is present at different degrees of contemporary urban life and there is a pressing spatial demand for such activities. Moreover, it was discovered that spatial integration of urban informality has the ability to sustain and catalyse greater urban frameworks, including the activities of the formal sector.
