Abstract

Academics have not quantified the quantity and quality of research conducted on pesantren (Islamic boarding school), particularly concerning the development of digital technology. Indeed, the current pesantren trend has accelerated as a response to the development of online media. This article will analyze emerging research trends, mentor academics involved in pesantren’s research, and direct researchers. Additionally, this article discusses the most influential authors and journals in the area. The research aims to evaluate pesantren's research trends indexed in Scopus using bibliometric analysis software Publish or Perish and VOS Viewer. The study discovered that pesantren's research has shifted during the last decade. According to the data, scholars continue to study pesantren's research themes infrequently, as indicated by the indexation of only 61 publications by Scopus. The majority of researchers use a conventional approach to pesantren. As such, it is critical to conduct future research on the relationship between pesantren and the advancement of digital technology. Specifically, in the form of Kiai (teacher) or santri-based learning (student-based learning) models and the process of pesantren adaptation, as indicated by the establishment of numerous pesantren media platforms as centers for religious knowledge production and dissemination. Thus, pesantren will keep being the source of religious knowledge by adapting to tradition and technology.

Abstract

Auguste Comte's Positivism, a philosophical paradigm that originated in the early 19th century, has been widely discussed and debated among scholars in various fields. In recent years, this issue has gained increasing attention in the context of Islamic digital research. This paper aims to critically analyze Comte's Positivism and its impact on Islamic digital research. In Islamic digital research, Positivism has been criticized for its lack of cultural and historical context and its disregard for the role of ethics and values. This article illustrates how positivism's emphasis on empirical observation and data is compatible with the Islamic digital research paradigm. Given the vast data generated by digital technologies, the scientific method provides a convincing foundation for comprehending complicated phenomena in the digital world. Findings indicate that applying positivism as a research paradigm in digital research is beneficial. However, digital researchers are advised to be cautious of the weaknesses of the paradigm they would adopt for a study.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused problems in learning tahfidz Al-Qur'an in Indonesia. One of the issues is how to keep the accuracy of reading the Qur'an related to lip movements and makharij letters which should be held through talaqqi (face-to-face) method but now it is conducted in virtual learning. This paper aims to analyze the innovation of tahfidz Al-Qur'an learning in Indonesia during the COVID-19 pandemic. This research uses qualitative data taken from observations and in-depth interviews. The research involves students, educators, and school principals. The data are analyzed using the triangulation technique based on a phenomenological mindset. The results show that (1) the learning of Al-Qur'an tahfidz during the pandemic is conducted online using supporting media technology that can accommodate, integrate, and unify the management of Al-Qur'an tahfidz learning; (2) Al-Qur'an tahfidz learning innovation can solve the existing problems by paying attention more to lip and tongue movements and sounds that the students produce, and; (3) Al-Qur'an tahfidz learning innovation has positive implications for the student's knowledge and skill competencies with satisfactory results. Their good outcomes may also be much better with the improvement of their attitudes in learning. This research suggests further research by developing a virtual tahfidz learning method to provide other alternatives to the tahfidz learning method during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

The humanitarian conflict between Israel and Palestine has spread not only to the real world but also to the virtual world. This research analyzes the #alleyesonrafah movement on social media as a form of global awareness campaign regarding the situation in Rafah, an area in Palestine that is the last line of protection for residents. Through a digital ethnography based on a content analysis approach, this research explores how hashtag is used by social media users to disseminate information, build transnational solidarity, and mobilize support. Data is collected from platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, with a focus on the frequency of use of hashtags, types of content shared, and interaction patterns among users. The research results show that the #alleyesonrafah movement has successfully attracted global attention, especially through humanitarian narratives spread by activists, non-governmental organizations, and the general public. This study also reveals the important role of social media as a medium for minority voices and driving social change. The #alleyesonrafah movement has demonstrated the profound power of social media as a tool for raising global awareness and fostering transnational solidarity in the face of humanitarian crises. However, this is only the beginning of understanding the complex interplay between digital activism and real-world impact. To build on this foundation, future research should adopt a multi-dimensional approach that explores not only the immediate effects of hashtag-driven campaigns but also their long-term implications, ethical considerations, and broader societal influences.

Abstract

Abstract

The involvement of Pesantren in digital media has led to the emergence of a brand-new Pesantren map in Indonesia, where Pesantren had previously played a traditional setting. Their engagement of religious leaders and institutions in cyberspace has fundamentally changed not only religious education practice but also the religious authority in digital media. This article aims to examine how the development of digital technology has altered the Pesantren learning tradition. Ngaji in the pesantren tradition, which is typically performed face-to-face, is currently conducted in a hybrid format through digital media. This article applied Netnography method which involves the systematic observation, analysis, and interpretation of online data.  Based on Pierre Bordieau's structural construction theory, this study examines how individuals' habitus, shaped by digital media influences their engagement with digital Islamic practices. In line with that, the hybridization practiced by pesantren in Indonesia has become the new habitus of the pesantren learning tradition. Habitus is the collective entity by which and which dominant social and cultural conditions are established and reproduced. Furthermore, the Pesantren hybrid with its live-streaming Ngaji also constitutes a new Islamic public sphere that strengthens the existing Digital Islam in Indonesia. On the other hand, according to this study, the Kiai has transformed from “the cultural broker” to "the cultural creator" in the digital era, establishing a new tradition in pesantren education. They have achieved the establishment of a digital tradition of studying the yellow book (Kitab Kuning). This transition also facilitates the evolution of pesantren’s learning tradition into a digital format. By continuing to adapt to shifting circumstances, hybrid pesantren bolster the evidence that pesantren are resilient and adaptable.

Abstract

Mainstreaming religious moderation has become crucial for Indonesian Muslims, particularly in the digital era. Experts agree that digital media is the most efficient and effective way of achieving this issue. To better understand the representation of Islam in Indonesia's digital sphere, this article aims to analyze content production by NU and Muhammadiyah, two of Indonesia's most prominent Islamic organizations. Using a Netnography approach and website analysis by Similarweb.com, this article analyzed the website's traffic, audience demographics (covering age and gender), and global standing. This information is used to investigate which social media network is most suited to disseminate ideas for religious moderation. According to the up-to-date statistics, nu.or.id is currently globally ranked 18,914, which places it well above muhammadiyah.or.id, which is positioned at the far more distant position of 140,435. Comparing December 2022 traffic and engagement statistics, nu.or.id had 4.169 million more visitors than muhammadiyah.or.id with 503,163 thousand visitors. The top country such as Indonesia, Malaysia, the United States, Singapore, and Germany perform admirably. The two sides are statistically about even when looking at viewer demographics. Based on these metrics, content created by nu.or.id that promotes religious moderation has a more powerful of being shared extensively. We believe there is potential for a stronger impact on mainstreaming religious moderation in Indonesia and globally if these two organizational platforms are integrated.

Abstract

This study aims to address the lack of scholarly attention to the dominance of Western colonial knowledge and the strategies for restoring local Islamic epistemic authenticity in Indonesia’s digital public sphere. Specifically, it examines the digital preaching strategies of Gus Baha in his online Al-Hikam studies, focusing on how local religious elites rearticulate vernacular Islamic authority through digital media while maintaining harmony with their followers. The research employs a qualitative approach using digital ethnography and interpretive content analysis of four YouTube channels that regularly disseminate Gus Baha’s Al-Hikam lectures. The findings reveal three central strategies in Gus Baha’s digital da‘wa: re-centering pesantren authority through online kitab kuning recitations, emphasizing sanad (chain of knowledge transmission) as a marker of epistemic authenticity, and adapting Sufi teachings into accessible audiovisual formats without losing their intellectual and spiritual depth. These strategies demonstrate how pesantren-based scholarship, classical Sufi teachings, and Javanese cultural values are revitalized within the contemporary digital ecosystem, providing an alternative to dominant globalized and textualist Islamic discourses. Theoretically, this study contributes to the discourse on digital religion and Islamic authority by showing how vernacular Sufism, mediated through online platforms, enables local scholars to resist Western epistemic dominance. It affirms the continuity of traditional Islamic scholarship while opening possibilities for plural epistemologies in understanding Islam in the digital age.
