Abstract

Kemampuan melakukan penelitian tindakan kelas merupakan bagian penting dari kompetensi profesional seorang guru. Namun faktanya banyak guru yang masih enggan dan kesulitan dalam melakukan penelitian tindakan kelas. Kegiatan ini bertujuan melakukan pendampingan kepada guru MI untuk meningkatkan motivasi dan kemampuan melaksanakan penelitian tindakan kelas. Model pengabdian yang digunakan adalah Community Based Research (CBR). Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan adalah kuesioner, wawancara, observasi, dan dokumentasi. Teknik analisis data yang digunakan adalah deskriptif kualitatif dan deskriptif kuantatitif yang berupa persentase. Riset pengabdian ini menghasilkan bahwa kegiatan pendampingan yang dilakukan kepada guru MI memiliki kontribusi dalam meningkatkan motivasi dan kompetensi guru melakukan penelitian tindakan kelas. Dengan demikian, kegiatan pendampingan kemitraan antara dosen dan guru memiliki dampak positif bagi peningkatan kualitas pendidikan baik di pihak perguruan tinggi maupun di sekolah

Abstract

English language teaching (ELT) in Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia, commonly known as pesantren, presents a unique context that requires a tailored pedagogical approach. This study aimed to explore the application of context-responsive pedagogy in ELT within the unique context of Islamic boarding schools in Indonesia. This qualitative study employed semi-structured interviews and classroom observation as data generation methods to gain insights into the experiences and perspectives of English language teachers regarding the implementation of context-responsive pedagogy in English language instruction. The findings revealed the importance of understanding learner needs, incorporating authentic materials, promoting cultural sensitivity, and effective use of technology in ELT practices in Islamic boarding school contexts. This study delves into how English language teachers navigated and negotiated their practices with the socio-cultural and religious values entrenched in this institution. It also highlighted the challenges English language teachers in this school context faced in the implementation of context-responsive pedagogy. Eventually, this research provides valuable insights for ELT practitioners, policymakers, and researchers interested in incorporating context-specific pedagogy to optimize ELT in Islamic boarding schools and similar educational contexts.

Abstract

Studies on washback of testing have been recently conducted. This demonstrates that there is a growing awareness that testing can have consequences beyond just the classroom. For one decade, Ministry of Education in Indonesia has administered National Examination (NE) as the standardized test for passing grade requirement. In spite of its good aim, NE has become one of controversial issues among educators, students and even parents. Some say yes while some others say no. This paper was mainly attempted to display some impacts, not all, of NE toward the test takers, the students. A qualitative research was employed where the data taken from observation and questionnaires to 20 students. The result of the study showed that most of the students felt unconfident with their score in National Examination due to the fact that their English competence was considered low. However, the difficulty of NE did not significantly affect their studying English language. In other words, the washback of NE on their study was negative.

Abstract

This quantitative pre-experimental study examined the influence of Reciprocal Teaching in improving tenth-grade students’ reading comprehension of recount texts among the tenth graders at an Indonesian Islamic Secondary School in the province of Lampung, Indonesia. This research used a one-group pre-test post-test design with 18 students. After the implementation of the Reciprocal Teaching method, a post-test aligned with the four core strategies, namely: predicting, clarifying, questioning, and summarizing, was conducted. The Shapiro-Wilk normality test showed that the pre-test scores were not normally distributed (p-value = .020), while the post-test met the normality assumption (p-value = .139). A Wilcoxon test was then applied and revealed a highly significant improvement (p-value = .000), indicating that Reciprocal Teaching had a strong positive effect on students’ reading comprehension on recount text. The findings conclude that the structured scaffolding provided by RT effectively enhances students' ability to construct meaning and internalize reading strategies. This study highlights the significance of RT as a robust instructional tool for EFL teachers to foster independent reading habits and improve academic outcomes in Islamic secondary school settings. The results recommend broader implementation of strategy-based instruction to address persistent literacy gaps in foreign language learning.

Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis kemampuan membaca permulaan siswa kelas 1 sekolah dasar, serta upaya untuk mengatasi kesulitan membaca permulaan. Penelitian kualitatif ini menggunakan pendekatan studi kasus yang melibatkan guru, siswa, dan orang tua siswa kelas satu sekolah dasar. Pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui observasi, wawancara, dan dokumentasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa data dianalisis melalui tahapan reduksi, penyajian dan penarikan kesimpulan serta divalidasi dengan triangulasi. Guru melakukan berbagai upaya untuk mengatasi kesulitan membaca permulaan pada siswa kelas I, salah satunya dengan memberikan jam tambahan belajar. Meskipun demikian, masih ditemukan siswa yang mengalami kesulitan membaca, seperti belum mampu membedakan huruf, merangkai huruf menjadi suku kata dan kata, membedakan intonasi suara, mengenali huruf konsonan, serta mengeja dengan benar.Guru menggunakan cara yang lebih inovatif untuk mengajarkan siswa mengenal huruf. Mereka juga mendorong siswa untuk menjadi lebih percaya diri selama proses pembelajaran. Guru menggunakan media pendidikan yang menarik, seperti buku bergambar, buku bacalah, buku cerita kartu kata, dan media lainnya. Hasil penelitian ini secara spesifik menunjukkan bahwa hambatan membaca permulaan yang dialami siswa muncul karena kurangnya penguasaan dasar literasi seperti pengenalan fonem, pembentukan suku kata, serta kemampuan menghubungkan simbol huruf dengan bunyi. Upaya guru yang meliputi pemberian waktu belajar tambahan, penggunaan media visual, serta penerapan metode pembelajaran multisensori terbukti membantu siswa dalam meningkatkan kemampuan membedakan huruf, memperbaiki kelancaran membaca, dan membangun kepercayaan diri. Temuan ini menegaskan bahwa strategi pembelajaran yang terstruktur, individual, dan melibatkan berbagai media merupakan pendekatan yang efektif untuk mengatasi kesulitan membaca permulaan pada siswa kelas 1 sekolah dasar.
