Abstract

Abstract: The diameter of the alba pulp of the spleen will be enlarged, when the body responds to allergens by increasing the activity of the immune system. Papaya fruits (Carica papaya L.) containing flavonoid that can be as an immunomodulator. This study aims to determine the effect of C. papaya extract to the diameter size alba pulp of the spleen of Ovalbumin (OVA) induced Balb/C mice. The research design was experimental in vivo animal test with post-test only control group design. Thirty male Balb/C mice, ±20grams weight, 8 weeks old, divided into six groups consists of a normal control, negative control, Methylprednisolone, and C. papaya extract treatment group (175mg/kg, 350mg/kg and 700mg/kg dose per day). The extract and Methylprednisolone are given for 28 days, while OVA is given on 15thand 22ndday (intraperitoneal,) and 23rd until 28thday (peroral). On the 29thday the mice are sacrificed and the duodenum was made into histological preparation with HE staining. The immunomodulator effect is assessed by the average of the diameter size alba pulp of the spleen under a light microscope. The data were analyzed using SPSS15 with one way ANOVA continued with Tukey test. The average of the diameter size alba pulp of the spleen for control group is 10,165 ± 0,195; negative control group is 30,357 ± 0,826; methylprednisolone group is 10,220 ± 0,346; 175mg/kgbb dose extract is 14,956 ± 1,057; 350mg/kgbb dose extract is 14,030 ± 0,667; and 700mg/kgbb dose extract is 12,504 ± 0,729. The conclusion of this study is Carica papaya L. extract treatment group (175mg/kg, 350mg/kg and 700mg/kg dose per day) has an effect to the average of the diameter size alba pulp of the spleen in OVA-induced Balb/C mice significantly. 700mg/kg dose per day has the same effect with the methylprednisolone group. Keywords: immunomodulator, Carica papaya L., alba pulp of the spleen, ovalbumin

Abstract

Abstract: Purple yam tuber (Dioscorea alata L.) is one of tubers that has not been used optimally. One of the nutrients contained in Dioscorea species is Saponin Steroid. This paper aims to examine the potential of Steroid Saponin in purple yam tuber (Dioscorea alata L.) as an immunomodulatory agent. The method is by reviewing from various literatures. This article found that Steroid Saponin in purple yam tuber (Dioscorea alata L.) had a potency as an immunomodulatory agent. Keywords: Purple yam tuber (Dioscorea alata L), Steroid Saponin, Immunomodulatory

Abstract

Abstract: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is the main cause of hemodialysis therapy. This research aims to study the characteristic of the Chronic Kidney Disease patients who routinely undergo hemodialysis (HD) therapy. Observational research with the cross-sectional design is conducted to the chronic kidney disease patients routinely treated with hemodialysis in the Dr Tjitrowardojo Hospital in Purworejo. The respondents’ characteristics include demography, vital sign, chronic kidney disease causes, lifestyle, pain, and insomnia. Product Moment Pearson correlation test is used to test the data. The research’s result shows that the majority of the respondents are men 22 people (61.1%), aged 40-55 years old 17 people (38,9%), High School graduate 18 people (50%), working 25 people (69,4%), and are married 34 people (88,9%). The majority of the respondents do not smoke 33 people (91,7%), do not drink coffee 25 people (69,4%), do not exercise 32 people (88,9%), and suffered CKD due to hypertension 25 people (69,4%). The majority of the respondents, 24 people, have undergone HD for 1-5 years and every HD treatment, the duration is 4,5 hours. They have low Hb level (< 12 gr/dl), normal albumin level (3,5 – 5,2 g/dl), suffered moderate pain and insomnia (28 people). Respondents’ characteristics correlated strongly are the habit of drinking medicine, pain and insomnia. The conclusion is a smoking habit, pain, and insomnia is the closest characteristics linked to chronic kidney disease patients who routinely undergo hemodialysis.  Keywords: Characteristic, Chronic Kidney Disease, Hemodialysis, Pain, Insomnia

Abstract

Cayenne pepper contains capsaicin and irritates the mucous of the digestive tract. Goblet cells play a role in mucosal defense because they produce mucin. In previous research, cayenne pepper juice caused gastric mucosal damage and improve at certain doses. This Research is a continuation of previous research, which was to determine the effect of cayenne pepper on the number of goblet cells of the small intestine mucosa of rats and is additional material for the development of therapy for digestive disorders. An experimental study with a post-test only and control group design, used 20 male rats, divided into 1 control (K) and 4 treatment groups (C45, C90, D135, and E180). Cayenne pepper juice was given according to the dose of the group using a gastric probe for 6 days. On the 7th day, the small intestine was taken and processed on histological preparation. Microscopic observations of goblet cells counted on average every 100 epithelia in 20 villi in 15 fields of view and the mean number was tested by One Way ANOVA and Post Hoc test. Analysis showed a significantly different mean number of goblet cells between groups (p<0.05), the highest was in the C135 (34.100 ± 1.274), the lowest mean was in the K (12.050 ± 0.462), and there was a decrease in the mean number in the C180 (28.525 ± 2.309). Cayenne pepper juice had effected the highest increase in the number of goblet cells at a dose of 135 mg and decreased at the dose of 180 mg of cayenne pepper in the small intestine of rats.
