Abstract

Kampung Sasirangan is one of the centers of traditional textile production of Banjarese called Sasirangan in South Kalimantan. Sasirangan was produced by the local community in the home industry scale with traditional process and production. The aim of the research is to identify and develop strategy to develop Kampung Sasirangan as an edutourism destination. The methods consist of direct observation in the home industry of Sasirangan traditional textile, in-depth interview, literature study, and focus group discussion. Research result shows that strategy to create edutourism sites of Sasirangan textile should include local community and local government participation. The Sasirangan product should be able to create a competitive product, reasonable prices, and high quality of the textile product. To provide edutourism attraction for educational purposes, it is important to provide a program for tourist to directly observe the traditional process to make Sasirangan. A guide from local people or craftsmen was important to ensure the interpretation of the traditional process was delivered properly. In such a case, the community development is crucial. The local government should be able to promote community development program through the establishment of a community group which is work in edutourism in the village. There also important to provide training, working capital, production tools, and assistance in promotion and marketing. Keywords: Edutourism, traditional textile, Sasirangan.

Abstract

Remote Indigenous Communities (KAT) in Hulu Sampanahan Village face serious barriers in accessing formal education due to geographic isolation, economic limitations, poor infrastructure, and strong local cultural values. This community service program aimed to increase educational awareness while identifying factors that hinder school participation among KAT in Hulu Sampanahan. The program was carried out through participatory educational outreach and socialization using a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach, involving village officials, community leaders, and residents. The findings revealed that low school participation is mainly caused by the long distance to secondary schools (33–44 km), severely damaged road conditions, the absence of middle and high schools within the village, and low parental awareness (only about 30% encourage their children to continue to junior high school, and less than 10% aspire for higher education). In addition, more than 70% of children are involved in household and subsistence work. Through the educational sessions attended by 35 households, with 63% actively participating in discussions, the community gained new awareness regarding educational rights, the importance of secondary and higher education, as well as scholarship opportunities accessible to their children. As an impact, the program successfully built initial community awareness of the strategic value of education, while also identifying priority needs such as the establishment of satellite schools, the provision of school transportation, and sustained multi-stakeholder support. Thus, participatory and context-based educational empowerment has proven to be an effective initial step in fostering social transformation in remote Indigenous communities.

Abstract

Hazardous and Toxic Waste (B3) is waste that contains hazardous or toxic materials which, due to their nature and/or concentration, quantity, either directly or indirectly, can pollute and/or damage the environment, endanger the environment, the health of humans and living creatures. others. Many industries do not realize that the waste they produce is included in the category of Hazardous and Toxic Waste (B3), so they easily release it into water bodies without processing, even though the waste produced can harm living creatures. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative (Sidiq Khoiri, 2019). This research was conducted to obtain alternative problem solutions or answer problems faced when managing B3 waste in the Ulin Regional General Hospital (RSUD) Banjarmasin City. Management of hazardous medical waste (B3) is an important part of responsible and sustainable medical practice.  B3 medical waste includes materials such as syringes, expired medicines, dangerous chemicals, and biological waste with potential for infection. The volume of waste from the Ulin Regional General Hospital, Banjarmasin City in 2023, which produced the most B3 medical waste in March, was 10,918.31 kg, in September it was 8,082.29 kg, and in February it was 7,122.25 kg. In January - May, the most B3 medical waste was infectious waste, while in June - December it was infectious waste (COVID-19).

Abstract

Regional development disparities remain a major issue in regional development planning, particularly in cities that are experiencing rapid growth and play a strategic role as regional hubs. Banjarbaru City, with its increasingly important position in the urban system of South Kalimantan, needs to identify growth centers in order to direct the development of its hinterland in a more structured and sustainable manner. This study aims to identify subdistricts with the potential to become growth centers and analyze the strength of interactions between subdistricts in Banjarbaru City. The research method used is a quantitative approach with census and survey techniques, through scalogram analysis, centrality index, and gravity model. The results show that the subdistricts of North Banjarbaru, South Banjarbaru, and Landasan Ulin have the most complete facilities and the highest centrality index, thus serving as the main growth centers. The subdistrict of Cempaka functions as a secondary growth center, while the subdistrict of Liang Anggang serves as the hinterland. Gravity analysis shows that the strongest spatial interaction occurs between the main growth centers, while the relationship between the center and the hinterland shows varying levels of interaction influenced by distance and population. These findings emphasize the importance of strengthening connectivity and equal distribution of facilities to encourage the spread of development in Banjarbaru City.

Abstract

This study examines the cultural geography of the Dayak Hampang community in the Meratus Mountains by integrating spatial, environmental, and political-economic perspectives. It employs a quasi-qualitative approach supported by survey methods and descriptive analysis to operationalize a cultural geography framework. Qualitative data on cultural values, indigenous knowledge, and settlement toponymy were collected through in-depth interviews. Settlement patterns were analyzed using Nearest Neighbour Analysis, GIS, field surveys, and documentation. The findings reveal that clustered toponymy and settlement patterns reflect a strong socio-spatial attachment to rivers, forests, and cultivated land, forming an integrated cultural landscape rooted in customary institutions. Shifting cultivation and ritual practices function as adaptive socio-ecological strategies that sustain livelihoods and conserve the mountainous environment despite pressures associated with protected forest designation. The study demonstrates that socio-ecological resilience increases when customary governance is formally recognized by reclassifying protected forests as customary forests (hutan adat). Conversely, restrictive state forest regimes that limit community Access, Assets, and Activities (3A) weaken adaptive capacity and heighten ecological vulnerability. Accordingly, the Sustainable Cultural Geography (SCG) model is expressed as: SCG = f (Ecological Resilience, Customary Forest Tenure, 3A Capacity), positioning cultural landscape sustainability as a function of these interrelated components.

Abstract

Residential land-cover change is an important indicator of spatial transformation and regional development dynamics. This study analyzes changes in residential land cover in North Tapin District, Tapin Regency, during 2016–2024 using Sentinel-2 Level-2A imagery integrated with Geographic Information Systems (GIS). A supervised classification approach based on the Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithm with a Radial Basis Function kernel was applied to distinguish residential and non-residential areas. Several spectral indices were incorporated to improve class separability prior to classification. Accuracy assessment using a confusion matrix with 50 validation points indicates high reliability, with Overall Accuracy values of 98% (κ=0.91) in 2016 and 96% (κ=0.83) in 2024. Post-classification comparison reveals an increase of 181.85 ha in residential land over eight years, mainly resulting from the conversion of non-residential areas. Spatially, expansion patterns tend to follow major road corridors and highly accessible zones. These findings demonstrate that the integration of Sentinel-2 imagery and SVM provides an effective framework for multitemporal residential land-cover monitoring and supports evidence-based regional planning.

Abstract

Gosong Panjang Village has outstanding potential to become a tourism village that prioritizes coastal landscapes, small islands, and local traditions. However, this development still faces institutional challenges, limited access, and a lack of basic infrastructure. The purpose of this community service program is to evaluate the cultural and natural attributes of the landscape, assess its suitability for tourism, and develop a spatial planning-based institutional strengthening plan. The method used is a field survey documented through observation, interviews, and the Village Development Plan (RPJMDes). Land suitability analysis uses scoring for seven tourism activities. The results show that the land suitability ranges from moderate to good, with beach recreation receiving the highest score. The Undulating Plain and the Coast are considered to have the best potential for land-based tourism. In the institutional strengthening strategy, funds are allocated through Pokdarwis and RPJMDes to improve road access and provide basic facilities in priority zones to support safe and sustainable village tourism development.

Abstract

Deforestation in South Kalimantan has increasingly encroached upon peatlands within the Kayu Tangi Forest Management Unit (FMU/KPH) in Liang Anggang Sub-district, Banjarbaru City. Despite its designation as a protected forest area, ongoing encroachment and land-use conversion have heightened wildfire risks, with 140 hotspots recorded between 2015 and 2025, averaging 14 hotspots per year. This study aims to analyse the strategic management practices of the FMU-Kayu Tangi based on the ASEAN peatland fire management guidelines and subsequently develop a conceptual model for peatland fire management as an adaptive, collaborative, and sustainable fire control system. A qualitative approach was employed using in-depth interviews, observation, and document analysis. The development of management strategies was guided by the peatland fire management framework published by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2021 and strengthened through SWOT analysis. The findings reveal that FMU Kayu Tangi implements an integrated peatland fire management approach covering prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery strategies. Preparedness efforts include early warning systems, public campaigns, and information dissemination, while response strategies involve collaboration with the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), and the Indonesian National Police (POLRI). Recovery strategies focus on post-fire rehabilitation, peat-endemic plant cultivation, burned-area monitoring, and law enforcement. Conceptually, this study identifies the Management Strategy of Peatland Fire (MSPF) as a model integrating regulations, peatland management, community participation, institutional capacity, public communication, and fire-monitoring technology. The study concludes that collaborative, ecosystem-based governance can enhance the effectiveness of peatland fire management despite institutional resource constraints.

Abstract

Banjarmasin is a lowland area with an average elevation of 1.23 meters above sea level, making it highly vulnerable to flooding. This study aims to analyze community adaptation and mitigation strategies in response to tidal flooding in the West Banjarmasin Subdistrict, Banjarmasin City. The research employed a quantitative, descriptive approach, using interviews with 100 household heads from nine urban villages. The findings indicate that community adaptation was categorized as high (93.7%), moderate (5.7%), and low (0.7%). Among the assessed parameters, preparedness for flood events obtained the lowest score (79%) compared to other adaptation indicators. Meanwhile, the level of community mitigation was categorized as high (91.2%), moderate (8.5%), and low (0.3%). Weather condition monitoring was identified as the lowest-scoring parameter (68%) among the mitigation indicators. These findings suggest that the Banjarmasin City Government should actively engage in public awareness and outreach programs, particularly to strengthen community preparedness for flooding. Furthermore, more serious and systematic measures are required to improve tidal flood mitigation, especially regarding weather monitoring
