Abstract

Curcumin is an active compound of the polyphenol group found in turmeric. Isolation and identification of curcumin have been done in plants which belong to genus Curcuma, such as Curcuma zedoaria. Curcumin is known for its antitumor, antioxidant properties and has many health benefits. Curcumin have many therapeutic activities, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticarcinogenic. The isolation and identification process was used maceration and TLC (Thin Layer Cromatography) method. The reason using this methods are efficient, easy, simple, and cheap. The extract characterization gave the water content valued at 0,37%, total ash valued at 0,7%, the acid insoluble ash valued at 0,291%. All of these extract characterization adequate the provision. From the results of TLC with a mixture of mobile phase (eluent) i.e. chloroform:ethanol:acetic acid with a ratio of 94:5:1, it shows that there are 3 stains with Rf values, respectively, for curcumin standard Rf1 0.1-0.125; Rf2 0.1375-0.1875; Rf3 0.3375-0.375. As for the white turmeric extract obtained Rf1 0.125-0.225; Rf2 0.1875-0.475; Rf3 0.425-0.675. Meanwhile, the mobile phase mixture (eluent) of chloroform:n-hexane:methanol with a ratio of 1:1:0,1 showed that there were 3 stains with Rf values, respectively, for curcumin the standard was Rf1 0.1-0.125; Rf2 0.1375-0.1875; Rf3 0.3375-0.375. As for the white turmeric extract obtained Rf1 0.1-0.125; Rf2 0.125-0.225; Rf3 0.35-0.375.

Abstract

Stunting is the impaired growth and development that children experience from poor nutrition, repeated infection, and inadequate psychosocial stimulation. Stunting is an issue that has a big impact. Infants and toddlers may experience morbidity and death in the near term as a result. Low intellectual and cognitive capacities can be caused over the long term, as well as problems with degenerative diseases and the lowest quality adult human resources. The average prevalence of stunting toddler in Indonesia in 2015-2017 was 31.4%, far above the WHO limit of 20%. Based on this idea, this community service was carried out with the aim of educating mothers with the family walfare movement community (FWMC) about the importance of knowledge on how to process food from natural ingredients such as Moringa leaves and pumpkin into cookies as functional food for stunting prevention in childrens in Tanjung Morawa Regency. This activity received a very good response and high enthusiasm from FWMC and headmans. This activity was attended by 35 participants consisting of 25 mothers and 10 people as headman. Furthermore, an observation survey was conducted by providing questionnaires to measure the level of understanding of food processing from natural ingredients as functional foods for the prevention of stunting in children. Observations showed that arround 96% of mothers after participating in this activity knew what stunting was, the causes, prevention of stunting and how to process food as functional foods that could reduce the prevalence of stunting in Buntu Bedimbar Village, so that they could apply in their respective households for the health.

Abstract

Abstract

Fruits and vegetables are food ingredients that contain a lots of nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and fiber that are needed by the body. Indonesia is a country that is very rich in fruits and vegetables. However, in fact, fruits and vegetables are rarely consumed by people, especially teenagers. Lack of intake in consuming fruits and vegetables can cause the body to lack nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, fiber and an imbalance in the body's acid and alkaline, which can lead to various diseases. The purpose of this community service is to provide counseling and educate students and teachers about the adequate intake of vitamins and minerals from fruits and vegetables to increase immunity in Senior High School students in Tanjung Morawa District. This community service activity was carried out by means of a lecture method by disseminating the activity plan to the children of the Yayasan Pendidikan Pauly Mandiri students, then demonstrations by conducting counseling. Community service activities in general received a very good response and high enthusiasm from students, and several teachers who attended and the chairman of the Pauly Mandiri Education Foundation in Tanjung Morawa asked to be resumed. The results of community service, especially practicing how to create fruits and vegetables by making salads from various fruits and vegetables that can be applied by students and teachers in their daily lives. The enthusiasm of the participants hoped that this outreach activity could be resumed, namely how to make it easier for children to make it easier for children to remember the importance of consuming fruits and vegetables.

Abstract

Gagatan harimau leaves (Vitis gracilis BL) is a plant contains several secondary metabolite compounds, namely alkaloids, glycosides, tannins, saponins and flavonoids and has been used traditionally to treat diarrhea, infectious diseases, inflammation and diabetes. The aim of this study was to to determine data on the percentage of deaths and the LC50 value of the ethanol extract of the Gagatan harimau (Vitis gracilis BL) against Artemia Salina Leach using the Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT) method. The method used is the Brine Shrimp Lethality Test (BSLT) with concentrations of 180 ppm; 200 ppm; 220ppm; 240ppm; 260ppm; 280ppm; 300 ppm and 0 ppm as negative controls each replicated three times. At each concentration, 10 Artemia salina Leach larvae were used as test animals, each concentration was 48 hours old. The toxic effect of the extract was determined by the percentage mortality of Artemia salina Leach larvae using probit analysis (LC50). The results of this research gave the linear regression equation Y = 11.674x-68.227. Therefore, the LC50 value is 6.275 and the LC50 gets a value is 187.068 ppm. Research on the toxicity of Gagatan harimau (Vitis gracilis BL.) ethanol extract using the BSLT (Brine Shrimp Lethality Test) method in this study is toxic because the LC50 is < 1000 ppm so it has the potential to be anticancer.
