Abstract

One of a plant that is thought to have quite high antioxidant activity is kemloko (Phyllanthus emblica L.). This plant is a material that is often used by the community as a traditional medicine. This plant in India has been used to treat cancer, diabetes, liver (liver), heart problems and anemia. This biological activity is thought to be caused by the presence of bioactive compounds from secondary metabolites contained therein, especially compounds from the phenolic and flavonoid groups. The short length of the estrus cycle of rats makes them ideal for investigation of changes occurring during the reproductive cycle. The estrus cycle lasts four days and is characterized as: proestrus, estrus, metestrus and diestrus, which may be determined according to the cell types observed in the vaginal smear. Since the collection of vaginal secretion and the use of stained material generally takes some time, the aim of the present work was to provide researchers with some helpful considerations about the determination of the rat estrus cycle phases in a fast and practical way. This study began with macroscopic examination, examination of water content, examination of water-soluble extract levels, examination of ethanol-soluble extracts, examination of total ash content, and also an examination of acid-insoluble ash levels, phytochemical screening of Phyllanthus emblica L. fruit nanoherbal and determination of the estrus cycle of female rats. The results of phytochemical screening showed that the compound of Phyllanthus emblica L. Fruit nanoherbal contained a class of secondary metabolites of alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, steroids/triterpenoids, and glycosides. And the estrus cycle of female rats can be determined by observing changes in vaginal epithelial cells.

Abstract

The severity of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) may be measured by interleukin-6 (IL-6) and chest X-rays. Brixia score of the chest radiographs is usually used to monitor COVID-19 patients’ lung problems. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the relationship between IL-6 levels and chest radiographs (Brixia score) that represent COVID-19 severity. A retrospective cohort study was conducted among COVID-19 patients who had a chest X-ray and examination of IL-6 levels at H. Adam Malik General Hospital, Medan, Indonesia. A multinomial logistic regression analysis was conducted to evaluate the association between IL-6 levels and the severity of the chest radiograph. A total of 76 COVID-19 patients were included in the study and 39.5% of them were 60–69 years old, with more than half were female (52.6%). A total of 17.1%, 48.7%, and 34.2% had IL-6 level of <7 pg/mL, 7–50 pg/mL and >50 pg/mL, respectively. There were 39.5%, 36.8% and 23.7% of the patients had mild, moderate and severe chest X-rays based on Brixia score, respectively. Statistics analysis revealed that moderate (OR: 1.77; 95% CI: 1.05–3.32) and severe (OR: 1.33; 95% CI: 1.03–3.35) lung conditions in the chest X-rays were significantly associated with IL-6 levels of 7–50 pg/mL. IL-6 more than 50 pg/mL was associated with severe chest X-ray condition (OR: 1.97; 95% CI: 1.15–3.34). In conclusion, high IL-6 levels significantly reflected COVID-19 severity through chest X-rays in COVID-19 patients.

Abstract

Stunting is a serious problem and is also a major nutritional problem. The problem of stunting has a quite serious impact. It can be short-term related to morbidity and mortality in infants and toddlers, medium-term related to low intellectual and cognitive ability, and long-term related to the quality of human resources and degenerative disease problems in adulthood. The average prevalence of stunting in Indonesia from 2015 to 2017 was 31.4%, far above the WHO limit of 20%. The government with Presidential Decree No. 42/2013 has established a national movement for the first 1000 days of life to improve the nutritional status of toddlers as an effort to handle stunting in Indonesia. Because of the mothers' lack of knowledge about stunting, we were moved to do community service in Medan Sunggal District. Based on this thought, this community service activity is carried out to educate women (community) about the importance of good and correct food processing regarding nutrition/nutrition intake for toddlers by making mothers health cadres in the family in the application of functional food processing from natural ingredients such as moringa leaves and mung beans for stunting prevention in Medan Sunggal District.

Abstract

Free radicals are an important health concern due to their role in the development of various diseases. Antioxidants, capable of neutralizing free radicals, are abundant in plants such as durian seeds (Durio zibethinus Murr.) and stevia leaves (Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni). Herbal tea formulated from these materials has potential as an alternative functional drink because both contain phenolic compounds with antioxidant activity. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of durian seeds and stevia leaves as herbal tea with antioxidant properties. The research involved sample collection, identification, preparation of simplicia, characterization, formulation of herbal tea, quality testing, and determination of antioxidant activity. The simplicia characteristics of durian seeds and stevia leaves showed water content of 6.16% each, water-soluble extract of 35% and 15.8%, ethanol-soluble extract of 25.5% and 14.6%, total ash of 0.73% and 0.3%, and acid-insoluble ash of 0.5% and 0.26%. Quality testing of the herbal tea showed water content of 2.18%, total ash of 3.90%, water-soluble ash of 73.85%, and acid-insoluble ash of 3.80%. Antioxidant activity based on IC50 values was 68.45 ± 1.32 ppm for durian seed tea, 61.6 ± 1.05 ppm for stevia tea, 39.28 ± 0.98 ppm (1:1), 44.64 ± 1.11 ppm (1:2), and 42.32 ppm ± 1.07 (2:1). These results indicate that combining durian seeds and stevia leaves can enhance antioxidant activity compared to individual extracts. Overall, durian seeds and stevia leaves can be developed into herbal tea formulations with very strong antioxidant activity, as reflected in their ability to reduce DPPH radicals. Radikal
