Abstract

Indonesia’s position as the world’s second-largest contributor to plastic waste reflects deeply rooted patterns of unsustainable consumption. Addressing this critical issue requires innovative educational strategies to cultivate environmental responsibility and creative problem-solving in future teachers. This study examines how a guided research-based learning (GRBL) model can transform the perceptions of prospective primary school teachers regarding plastic waste management—shifting from conventional 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) actions to designing environmentally friendly bioplastics. Employing a one-shot case study design, the research was carried out over one semester in a science education course involving 214 fifth-semester students enrolled in a primary teacher education programme. They were divided into 54 groups. Data were collected through observation sheets, student worksheets, and creativity assessment rubrics. The findings suggest that GRBL prompted students to critically engage with sustainability issues by exploring the biodegradability of various natural materials. Most participants selected starch-based substances due to their accessibility and assumed ecological benefits. However, the resulting bioplastic products predominantly exhibited characteristics of modification and imitation rather than originality or innovation. The proportion of students proposing plastic from organic materials increased significantly from 22.2% to 66.7%, with 27.8% suggesting edible straw ideas. While these developments are promising, the ideas lacked originality and were limited to modifications and imitations. This indicates that while GRBL broadened students’ views on waste solutions, their creative outputs remain limited by insufficient scientific exploration and design experience. The study concludes that GRBL has strong potential to foster sustainability-oriented thinking in teacher education, especially when paired with deeper inquiry and iterative practice. These findings highlight the need for science teacher education to embed structured, hands-on research experiences that connect scientific knowledge with real-world environmental issues, preparing future educators to promote both creativity and ecological awareness in the classroom.

Abstract

Abstract Vocational education in machining engineering often continues to emphasize the mastery of practical procedures, while students’ critical thinking skills in analysing problems, evaluating alternatives, and making technical decisions have not been optimally developed. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of the Inquiry-Creative Learning model in improving students’ critical thinking skills and to identify the supporting and inhibiting factors in its implementation. The study employed a mixed-methods approach with an explanatory sequential design. The quantitative phase used a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design involving 63 eleventh-grade students in the Machining Engineering Program, consisting of 30 students in the experimental group and 33 students in the control group. The qualitative phase involved six students from the experimental group and two mechanical engineering teachers through semi-structured interviews and observations. The test instrument measured four indicators of critical thinking, namely analysis, inference, evaluation, and decision-making. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics, gain, N-gain, ANOVA, Mann-Whitney U test, eta squared, and thematic analysis. The results showed that the mean score of the experimental group increased from 36.00 to 71.20, while that of the control group increased from 37.58 to 47.36. The N-gain score of the experimental group was 0.539, which was in the moderate category, whereas that of the control group was 0.145, which was in the low category. ANOVA showed significant differences in posttest scores (F = 157.207; p < 0.001; η² = 0.720), gain scores (F = 110.140; p < 0.001; η² = 0.644), and N-gain scores (F = 221.174; p < 0.001; η² = 0.784), which were further supported by the Mann-Whitney U test. The qualitative data revealed that group discussion, real problems, hands-on practice, availability of tools, and teacher readiness supported students’ critical thinking, whereas limited time, low self-confidence, and student passivity served as inhibiting factors. This study concludes that Inquiry-Creative Learning is effective in improving students’ critical thinking skills and has implications for vocational learning that is investigative, reflective, contextual, authentic, and collaborative.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a sciencepreneurship-based community empowerment model in developing appropriate technology to improve the entrepreneurial intention (EI) of rural communities. The study was conducted in Krayan Jaya Village, Long Ikis District, Paser Regency, East Kalimantan, involving 40 participants divided into two groups: an appropriate technology group for producing tote bags made from spunbond fabric (Group A) and an appropriate technology group for developing a solar-powered water pump (Group B). This study employed a mixed-methods approach with an explanatory sequential design. The quantitative phase used a quasi-experimental multi-group pretest-posttest design, while the qualitative phase involved observation and semi-structured interviews. Entrepreneurial intention was measured using a 20-item Likert-scale questionnaire covering entrepreneurial orientation, internal motivation, risk-taking courage, and self-perception as a prospective entrepreneur. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics, assumption testing, the Wilcoxon signed-rank test, N-gain, ANCOVA, and thematic analysis. The results showed that the mean EI score of Group A increased from 50.80 to 78.45, with an N-gain of 0.56, while that of Group B increased from 52.00 to 74.50, with an N-gain of 0.48. The Wilcoxon test indicated significant improvement in both groups (p < 0.001). ANCOVA showed a significant difference in effectiveness between the groups after controlling for pretest scores (F = 7.156; p = 0.011; partial eta squared = 0.162), with the adjusted mean of Group A higher than that of Group B. The qualitative data revealed that involvement in appropriate technology development, institutional support, and business opportunities strengthened EI, whereas limited capital, fear of failure, technical complexity, and marketing challenges acted as barriers. This model is relevant for participatory, contextual, and sustainable rural community empowerment, particularly when supported more systematically by village-owned enterprises and local facilitators.

Abstract

This community service activity aims to improve the competence of lecturers at the Faculty of Culture, Management, and Business, Mandalika University of Education, in writing quality community service articles through the use of artificial intelligence technology, specifically ChatGPT and Scite.ai. The method used was an interactive workshop based on direct practice, equipped with a pre-test, delivery of theoretical materials, practice using AI, post-test, and reflection sessions. The analysis results showed a significant increase in post-test scores compared to the pre-test, with the majority of participants' N-gain being in the medium to high category. Participants were also able to produce draft community service articles with good to very good quality categories based on the assessment rubric. The level of participant satisfaction with the materials, methods, and implementation of the workshop was in the high category, indicating the success of the training approach used. This activity also contributed to the achievement of the SDGs, especially the goals of Quality Education (SDG 4), Innovation and Infrastructure (SDG 9), and Partnership (SDG 17). This training can be replicated as a model for increasing lecturer capacity in the context of digital transformation of higher education.

Abstract

This study explores the perspectives of students with disabilities on the implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in schools across Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia. AI is increasingly recognized for its transformative potential in education, particularly in fostering inclusivity through personalized learning, improved accessibility, and enhanced engagement. A qualitative approach, combined with a literature review, was employed to analyze existing research and identify regional differences in AI implementation. Results indicate that AI tools, such as adaptive learning platforms and assistive technologies, significantly benefit students by addressing individual learning needs and overcoming traditional barriers. However, challenges persist, including inadequate infrastructure, insufficient teacher training, and concerns over data privacy and ethical use of sensitive student information. These obstacles are particularly pronounced in rural and underserved areas, highlighting the need for targeted investments and policy reforms. The study recommends prioritizing infrastructure development, implementing comprehensive training programs for educators, and establishing robust ethical frameworks to ensure responsible AI usage. By addressing these challenges and fostering regional collaboration, AI can become a powerful tool for promoting equity and accessibility in education, ultimately enhancing learning outcomes for students with disabilities. Future research should focus on longitudinal studies and firsthand data collection to better understand AI's long-term impact and refine inclusive educational practices.

Abstract

This study qualitatively investigates the dynamics of digital technology use in science education at the university level, aiming to fill a gap in the literature that predominantly emphasizes quantitative impacts over user experiences. Employing a case study design, data were collected from six lecturers and ten students in West Nusa Tenggara through in-depth interviews. The data were analyzed iteratively using a Grounded Theory approach to develop a theoretical explanation rooted in participants' lived experiences. The main finding of this study is a substantive theory: the Model of Pedagogical Negotiation in an Unequal Digital Ecosystem. This theory posits that the effectiveness of technology lies not in its sophistication but in the ability of lecturers and students to engage in “pedagogical negotiation” to overcome systemic barriers. Two key barriers were identified: (1) a multifaceted digital divide (infrastructural, economic, geographical), often “invisible” to institutions, and (2) institutional fragmentation caused by non-standardized platforms and a lack of coordination among lecturers, which creates a stressful and inefficient learning environment. In conclusion, optimizing digital technology in education requires a paradigm shift from merely providing tools toward building a supportive, inclusive, and human-centered learning ecosystem.

Abstract

Food safety knowledge is essential for vocational students who handle food during school-based processing activities. This study assessed food safety knowledge and examined selected misconceptions among Grade XI students enrolled in an Agricultural Product Processing Agribusiness program at one public vocational secondary school in West Lombok Regency, Indonesia. A descriptive cross-sectional design with an embedded qualitative explanatory component was used. Of 46 students in the cohort, 10 participated in questionnaire pilot testing and were excluded from the main study. The remaining 36 students completed an 11-item True/False questionnaire aligned with the WHO Five Keys to Safer Food framework and participated in individual semi-structured interviews. Students demonstrated strong recognition of handwashing, kitchen-surface cleanliness, separation of raw and cooked foods during storage, and washing fruits and vegetables. However, misconceptions concerned shared cutting boards, thorough reheating, cooking temperature, prolonged room-temperature storage, and judging water safety by appearance. The mean knowledge score was 7.86 of 11, and the questionnaire showed marginal-to-moderate internal consistency for preliminary group-level diagnostic use (KR-20 = 0.69). Interview findings indicated that some students considered previous cooking sufficient, associated reheating with burning, viewed freshly slaughtered meat as containing few bacteria, and treated clear water as safe. These findings identify curriculum priorities related to cross-contamination, time–temperature control, reheating, and invisible microbiological and chemical hazards. Because the study involved one vocational cohort, the findings should be interpreted as a local diagnostic profile.

Abstract

This study examined the potential integration of halal concepts into the science curriculum and teacher-reported instructional practices at SMP and SMA Islam Al Kamal NW Narmada. Using an embedded qualitative case-study design, the study combined researcher-developed curriculum mapping with written responses from four purposively selected science teachers representing integrated science, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Data were analysed through qualitative content analysis, thematic coding, and cross-source comparison. The findings identified the strongest opportunities for integration in topics related to material sources, food and nutrition, the digestive system, food additives, product composition, microorganisms, fermentation, biotechnology, health, and production processes. Teachers also identified additional links through acids and bases, solutions, colloids, carbon compounds, quantities, measurement, and product observation. Reported practices included presenting examples of halal and non-halal products, examining labels and ingredient lists, observing products available in the community, and conducting simple practical activities such as pH testing. However, the reported implementation remained largely contextual and did not yet demonstrate systematic engagement with evidence evaluation, uncertainty, argumentation, or socioscientific decision-making. The study also highlights the need to distinguish scientific analysis from formal halal determination, as laboratory evidence alone cannot establish halal status without traceability, process documentation, and authorised certification. Overall, halal concepts offer a relevant interdisciplinary and socioscientific context for science learning, provided that integration is conceptually accurate, pedagogically structured, and supported by appropriate resources, teacher professional development, and collaboration with Islamic Education teachers. Further research should include classroom observations and direct assessment of student learning outcomes across diverse Islamic secondary school contexts.

Abstract

Applied Chemistry practical work can remain procedural when students follow laboratory steps without explicitly regulating their learning or translating chemical evidence into product decisions. This pilot study evaluated students’ perceived practicality of a local-resource-based Applied Chemistry module and examined pretest-posttest changes in metacognitive awareness and chemopreneurship. Twenty-eight undergraduate students enrolled in Applied Chemistry at Universitas Pendidikan Mandalika participated through total sampling during the even semester of the 2025/2026 academic year. The intervention was implemented over seven meetings (21 instructional hours) and involved extraction of local plant materials, formulation of a herbal animal-shampoo prototype, product-quality evaluation, metacognitive reflection, cost analysis, packaging design, and marketing simulation. Data were collected using a 20-item perceived-practicality questionnaire, student worksheet assessments, an adapted 52-item Metacognitive Awareness Inventory, and a 24-item chemopreneurship questionnaire. The instruments were evaluated through expert judgment for content validity, and internal consistency was assessed using Cronbach’s alpha. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Shapiro-Wilk tests, normalized gain calculated from group means, and Wilcoxon signed-rank tests. The mean perceived-practicality score was 82.88% (SD = 4.62), while the mean worksheet score was 79.54 (SD = 3.92). Metacognitive-awareness scores increased from 57.16 to 73.32 (N-gain = 0.38; W = 0, p < .001), while chemopreneurship scores increased from 54.68 to 77.00 (N-gain = 0.49; W = 10, p < .001). These findings indicate favorable student perceptions and higher post-implementation self-report scores. However, the absence of a comparison group and complete psychometric and process evidence limits causal interpretation. Further iterative validation and controlled testing are therefore required.

Abstract

Lemongrass and agarwood are potential forest herbal tea products which need to be further explored based on research and development schemes. The purpose of this research is to conduct a sensory evaluation using a 9-point hedonic scale and different statistical approaches on mixed lemongrass beverages and agarwood infusion. Four treatments are used in this research including: L1 = Lemongrass concentration 0.1% w/v, L2 = Lemongrass concentration 0.2% w/v, L3 = Lemongrass concentration 0.3 % w/v, L4 = Lemongrass concentration 0.4% w/v. This research used 4 different statistical approaches including Kruskal-Wallis, Freidman Test, ANOVA-CRD, and ANOVA-RBCD. Sensory evaluation was conducted using a 9-point hedonic scale using 30 trained respondents on 4 parameters including appearance, aroma, taste and bitterness. The results show that all statistical approaches give sensitive analysis for P-value measurement except for the Freidman Test. Appearance is the only parameter with a significant p-value in all statistical approaches. Different treatments show different maximum hedonic score values on different parameters, and they are significantly different based on DMRT results. However, based on the area of the spider web chart, L2 has the largest impact on hedonic score value compared to other treatments. It could be concluded that Treatment L2 (lemongrass concentration of 0.2% w/v) has the highest hedonic evaluation score which shows that this is the effective concentration to produce beverage products with good acceptability.
