Abstract

The negative impact of prolong and excessive application of synthetic fertilizers is a reason to reuse organic material as a plant nutrition resources and to enhance degraded soil. Organic materials such as animal and industrial wastes are commonly use as sources of organic amendment. The purpose of this study was to examine the changes in chemical properties of soil and the growth of sweet corn as affected by the application of solid organic fertilizers in Ultisol. This research was carried out in October 2016 until March 2017 at Greenhouse, University of Bengkulu, arranging in a Completely Randomized Design with two factors and three replications. The first factor was Organic amendment consisting of vermicompost, chicken manure, oil palm empty bunches compost (OPEBC). The second factors were rates of the amendment, i.e., 0, 10, 20, and 30 Mg ha-1. Results indicate that total soil organic carbon (TSOC) and total soil nitrogen (TSN) were not considerably different among types of organic amendments used in this study; however, an increase in soil pH and a decline of exchangeable Al are highest in the application of OPEBC as compared to others. Likewise, the growth of sweet corn was the best in soil amended with chicken manure. Soil chemical properties such as TSOC, TSN, soil pH significantly enhanced but exchangeable Al markedly lowered up to 20 Mg ha-1, then level off afterward. Sweet corn growth as indicated by plant height, shoot dry weight (SDW), and root dry weight (RDW) was also significant up to 20 Mg ha-1. This study suggests that the addition of organic amendment at a rate of 20 Mg ha-1 is sufficient to provide plant nutrient and improvement of soil properties for sweet corn growth.

Abstract

Susilo E, Setyowati N, Nurjannah U, Riwandi, Muktamar Z. 2021. Inhibition of germination due to application of extracts from main plants and ratoon sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) produced in swamplands. In: Herlinda S et al. (Eds.), Prosiding Seminar Nasional Lahan Suboptimal ke-9 Tahun 2021, Palembang  20 Oktober 2021. pp. 426-434.  Palembang: Penerbit & Percetakan Universitas Sriwijaya (UNSRI).Sorghum is one of the plants that produces allelopathic chemicals with bioherbicide potential. Water extract can be used to suppress weeds around planted plants. The water extract material's source has the potential to be used as a variety of bioherbicides. The goal of the study was to see if water extract of sorghum obtained from the main plant and ratoon growing in swampland with different test plants could hinder germination. A randomized block design was adopted in this investigation. The first factor is the extract's source, which is made up of the primary plant and ratoon. The second component was the test plants, which were Numbu and Suri 3 types. Experiments on Petri dishes used the bioassay method. Each petri dish received 10 mL of aqueous extract, 25 sorghum seeds, and was cultured for five days. The main plant had the largest germination inhibition, as evidenced by normal germination (33.78%), shorter radicle length (5.55 cm), and a higher number of non-growing seeds (47.12%). Furthermore, the Suri 3 variety had the maximum germination inhibition, with normal sprouts (34.65%), radicle length (5.10 cm), sprout wet weight (0.118 g), and radicle dry weight (0.118 g) in the test plant (0.0012 g). low, and seeds did not develop any faster (43.57 percent). These data suggest that the most allelopathic chemicals are produced by sorghum extract taken from the primary plant. Furthermore, the maximum inhibition was achieved using sorghum extract from the Numbu variety in combination with the Suri 3 test plant. As a result, the primary crop has the greatest potential as a bioherbicide source.

Abstract

Ulandari D, Setyowati N, Sudjatmiko S, Widodo W, Muktamar Z.  2021. Effect of vermicompost and ammonium nitrate dosage on growth and yield of long beans (Vigna sinensis L.) In: Herlinda S et al. (Eds.), Prosiding Seminar Nasional Lahan Suboptimal ke-9 Tahun 2021, Palembang 20 Oktober 2021. pp. 514- 523. Palembang: Penerbit & Percetakan Universitas Sriwijaya (UNSRI). The production of long beans (Vigna sinensis L.) can be increased through intensification or extensification, respectively. Intensification includes soil management activities, selection of superior varieties, pest and disease control, and fertilization. Fertilization is necessary for the improvement of long beans yield. The combination of organic and synthetic is necessary to maintain soil productivity. Such combination is vermicompost and ammonium nitrate fertilizer. The purpose of this study was to ascertain the effect of a combined dose of vermicompost and ammonium nitrate on long bean growth and yield. The study used Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 3 replications. The treatments were Vermicompost (V) 15 tons/ha, ZA 50 kg/ha, V 15 tons/ha + ZA 50 kg/ha, (V 15 tons/ha + ZA 100 kg/ha, V 15 tons/ha + ZA 150 kg/ha, V 15 tons/ha + ZA 200 kg/ha, and V 15 tons/ha + ZA 250 kg/ha. The results indicated that applying vermicompost alone or with ZA had no noticeable effect on plant growth and yield. There were no significant differences in plant height, pod length, pod diameter, number of seeds, number of pods, or pod weight between treatments. Long bean productivity is lower than its potential yield due to unfavorable environmental factors.

Abstract

The great potential of Srikuncoro Village is from the agricultural and livestock sectors. The livestock sector, in addition to producing main products such as eggs, meat and milk, also produces by-products that have not been utilized properly. The product is livestock manure which if not managed properly will become livestock waste. One of the simple, easy, inexpensive and adaptive technologies is waste management through vermicomposting technology, which is a composting process carried out with the help of worms. The implementation of community service activities in Srikuncoro village is carried out through socialization and the practice of vermicomposting technology using Lumbricus rubellus worms. The activity was carried out from July to November 2021 and was attended by 20 members of the Lotus Farmer Group Association, Srikuncoro Village. This service activity resulted in several achievements, including: 1. Increased knowledge of the Srikuncoro village community (represented by members of the farmer group association) in livestock waste management through vermicomposting technology; 2. Increased knowledge about the cultivation of Lumbricus rubellus worms; 3. The emergence of public interest in making vermicomposting a side job (besides raising livestock) by building vermicomposting with the direction and guidance of a service team; and 4. The successful transfer of knowledge on vermicomposting technology from the service team to the community.

Abstract

Heavy metal pollution is an important issue that must receive serious attention from various authorities, including the community. Cadmium (Cd) contamination will harm environmental and human health. Upland rice plants are the main food-producing plants susceptible to Cd contamination. This study aimed to determine the effect of vermicompost on cadmium content and the vegetative phase of upland rice plants in Inceptisol. This study used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with one factor, namely several dose levels of vermicompost, namely 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 t ha-1. The results of this study indicated that the use of vermicompost significantly affected the number of leaves and tillers of upland rice. A Vermicompost dose of 15 t ha-1 is considered optimum in increasing the number of leaves and tillers of upland rice. The use of vermicompost increased the vegetative growth of upland rice, so it increased the productivity of upland rice plants.

Abstract

Ultisols have a main problem of high soil acidity, low organic matter, low macronutrients, and very low P availability which can affect plant growth and yield. This research aims to determine the dynamics of soil pH, and P availability and determine the concentration of pineapple peel-based eco enzyme that produces the highest shallots. This research was carried out using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with treatment concentrations of eco enzyme 20% (200 mL eco enzyme and 800 mL water), 40% (400 mL eco enzyme and 600 mL water), 60% (600 mL eco enzyme and 400 mL water), 80% (800 mL eco enzyme and 200 mL water), 100% (100% eco enzyme), without treatment/control, and NPK fertilizer treatment. The results showed that the application of eco enzyme at a concentration of 60% was a sufficient concentration to improve soil characteristics and shallot yield as indicated by soil pH of 6.58, soil P of 6.75 ppm, number of bulbs 3.21 and weight of bulbs 4.69 g, as well as the application of 100% eco enzyme to provide soil organic C amounted to 3.76% which was higher than other treatments.

Abstract

Ultisols are widespread in the Indonesian archipelago and have potential for developing the agricultural sector. However, Ultisols have several problems, such as low organic matter content, poor soil structure, unstable soil aggregates, high soil bulk density, and low total soil pore space. These problems result in slow soil infiltration and permeability, which can interfere with plant growth. This study aimed to determine the best dose of tithonia compost to improve certain soil physical properties and increase the yield of green mustard in Ultisols. The study was conducted from March to May 2024 at the Greenhouse of the Department of Crop Production, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Bengkulu. This study used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 6 treatments of tithonia compost doses with 3 replications. The treatments were 0 (control), 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 ton ha-1. After mustard harvesting, undisturbed soil sample was collected from each polybag and analyzed for soil moisture, bulk density, and soil permeability. Fresh and dry weight of mustard were also measured after harvesting. The results showed that the highest improvement of selected soil physical properties was soil fertilized with tithonia compost at the rate of 15 ton ha-1, as shown in the decrease of bulk density and increase in soil moisture content, total pore space, and soil permeability. The application of tithonia compost at 5 ton ha-1 was adequate for the improvement of selected soil physical properties and nutrient release to the soil for green mustard cultivation. The findings of the study will benefit to crop management, especially mustard yield using tithonia compost in Ultisols.
