Abstract

Idano Gawo District, Nias Regency has geographical characteristics that are vulnerable to tsunami. Based on the history of the earthquake in the Nias Islands in 2005, there was a release of megathrust earthquake energy caused by disturbance of the big Aceh earthquake on December 26, 2004. This earthquake was followed by a 2-3 meter high tsunami that hit several coastal areas in the Nias Islands, so disaster mitigation is needed. Mapping tsunami hazards and risks is an important effort for effective mitigation planning, by knowing the area of danger and tsunami risk based on a 16 meter height scenario. The method used in this study is the hloss and cost distance methods. Mapping the level of tsunami hazard and risk with a height of 16 meters using Arcgis Software. For processing tsunami disaster hazard and risk data using Microsoft Excel Software. Bozihona Village is an area that has a high level of danger with a total area of 3.76 km2 and a high level of tsunami risk with a total area of 3.77 km2.

Abstract

Abstract

Aquaponics is a system that combines fish and plant farming in one mutually beneficial ecosystem. However, the consumption of electrical energy, such as driving water pumps in aquaponic systems, is crucial because it requires considerable financing. Solar panels are one of the alternatives in reducing the use of electrical energy. Solar energy is environmentally friendly and does not produce pollution like conventional energy. Thus, automation and using solar energy as renewable energy can be a solution to improving the efficiency of aquaponic systems. This research aims to analyze the Arduino-based automation system and the use of 200 Wp solar panels in aquaponics involving catfish and water spinach cultivation. The system uses solar panels as the primary energy source stored in VRLA batteries, regulated through a Solar Charge Controller, and converted into AC electricity to operate the water pump and automatic monitoring system. Arduino Uno controls the automation and monitoring with pH, TDS, temperature, humidity, and ultrasonic sensors to monitor environmental conditions. Tests show that the solar panel produces an average voltage of 40.83 V and a current of 3.28 A, with an efficiency of 40.65% and a power that can be generated in a day of 1200 Watts. The operational cost of the solar panel system was calculated using the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE), showing that it is more efficient than PLN electricity at Rp 688.15/kWh vs. Rp 1,444.70/kWh or Rp 31,397.3 vs. Rp 65,947.35 for one year of aquaponic system use. Monitoring for 10 days showed optimal growth of water spinach and catfish plants with consistent pH, temperature, humidity, and pump and servo operation. The results indicate that an aquaponics system powered by renewable energy and Arduino-based automation effectively meets energy needs at a lower cost and improves the efficiency and reliability of aquaponics operations.

Abstract

Prediction of the empirical formula for ground acceleration is an important thing to analyze for seismic estimation in an area. This needs to be done to reduce the negative impact of earthquakes as a more appropriate mitigation effort in planning and designing earthquake-resistant buildings. Therefore, the empirical formulation from Zhaou, et al is used, which is well adapted to the seismotectonic conditions of the North Sumatra region, which has high seismic vulnerability, considering that this region is located in an active subduction zone. This advantage allows the model to more accurately predict the maximum ground acceleration (PGA) produced by earthquakes in the region. The purpose of this research is to obtain an empirical formulation of the maximum ground acceleration value based on seismic parameters such as distance, depth, and magnitude. It will also show the relationship between these parameters and the value of maximum ground acceleration or peak ground acceleration (PGA) in the North Sumatra region. This study modifies the empirical formulation of Zhao, et al data sourced from the Meteorology Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) of North Sumatra in 2017-2023 with a magnitude of 3 - 6 Mw. This research uses non-linear regression with the least squares method. The results of the analysis of the empirical formula produce the constant value sought a = 1.4703 b = -0.0025, c = 20.7441, d = 0.0196, e = 0.0015, S_SS = -2.0843, and S_SL = -0.0529. An empirical formula was obtained for the North Sumatra region based on the research results. This equation can be used on a scale of 3.0 - 6.0 Mw and a distance to the earthquake source between 0 - 300 km. The relationship between each parameter of this empirical formula is that the PGA value will increase with the magnitude, and the PGA value will decrease as the epicentre distance increases.

Abstract

Sulawesi is situated at the intersection of three tectonic plates the Indo-Australian, Eurasian, and Philippine plates. The Palu Koro fault is one of the primary causes of seismic activity in the Sulawesi region, making it vulnerable to earthquakes on this Island. As an initial step in disaster mitigation, the information provided is useful in determining the initial signs before the occurrence of an earthquake, it is necessary to identify Ultra Low Frequency (ULF) Signal Anomalies as earthquake precursors. The methods employed are those of power spectrum density (PSD) and single-station transfer function (SSTF). The analysis of anomalies suspected of being precursors to 5 earthquake events revealed that in the February 27, 2023 earthquake, the anomaly appeared twice with a lead time of 17 days. In the February 28, 2023 earthquake, the anomaly appeared twice. In the March 7, 2023 earthquake, the anomaly appeared 3 times with a lead time of 20 days. The March 28, 2023 earthquake had 6 anomalies with a lead time of 24 days. The April 6, 2023 earthquake had 5 anomalies with a lead time of 29 days. anomalies were detected with lead times ranging from 17 to 30 days. The anomaly source azimuth direction was also determined.

Abstract

A resistivity meter relies on its measurement system as a crucial part that determines the accuracy of data acquisition in geoelectrical methods. Previous developments in digital resistivity meters using voltage sensor modules, INA219 modules, and ACS712 modules have shown limitations in terms of accuracy and the resolution of their analog-to-digital converters (ADC). These shortcomings can be overcome by integrating the ADS1115 module, which converts analog sensor signals into precise digital outputs down to the millivolt range. NodeMCU ESP32 is used to process digital signals from the ADS1115 into current and voltage readings displayed on the LCD; then data monitoring and download can be performed via the website. Measurement data is stored on a microSD card with date and time synchronization from the DS3231 real-time clock (RTC) module. Calibration results show very high linearity in the input range of ±30–500 mA for current and ±0.0005–6.5 V for voltage, with an R² value of 0.999, indicating that the regression equation is can used to describes the sensitivity characteristics of the measurement system. Accuracy tests resulted in an average of 99.8% for the current measurement system and 99.9% for the voltage measurement system, suggesting that sensor readings closely align with the results of standard measuring instruments like multimeters. Prototype testing in laboratory-scale produced inverse modeling graph with the first layer of homogeneous sand samples and the first and second layers of sand mixed with gravel samples in accordance with previous studies, by the RMS error obtained for each sampel were 26.58% and 39.70%.

Abstract

The existence of subsurface water pipes in the Al-Musannif Mosque environment, Campus IV UINSU, must be established. This is because it is one of the important roles of knowing the location of the pipes in order to reduce engineering accidents and as the accuracy of engineering surveys. This research was conducted using the geomagnetic method, which aims to determine the location of subsurface water pipes and to find out how the subsurface structure in the region is constructed. From this measurement, 43 points were obtained with a distance of 5 to 10 meters and with coordinates from latitude 3°49'56.24 "N and longitude 98°58'72.13" E to latitude 3°49'49.50 "N and 98°58'58.12 "E. The results of this study indicate the presence of anomalous values throughout the study area, exhibiting an elongated shape with a dominant northeast-southwest direction. The values range from 5.6 to 321.1 nT, which is thought to be associated with subsurface pipelines. The 2D modeling results indicate the presence of two anomalies: a high anomaly, which is thought to be a pipe, and a low anomaly, which is suspected to be clay lithology. At high susceptibility contrast values, ranging from 0.2 to 1 SI, with a depth of 2 to 4 m below the surface, it is postulated that these anomalies are associated with metal pipes located in the northwest and southeast. At low susceptibility contrast values, ranging from -1 to -0.2 SI, with a depth of 0 to 20 m below the surface, it is proposed that these anomalies are associated with clay marked with dark blue to light blue color.   Keywords: magnetic field anomalies, geomagnet, subsurface structure, susceptibility

Abstract

North Sumatra is located in the Ring of Fire zone, making it prone to earthquakes due to the convergence of the Indo-Australian and Eurasian plates, which form the 390 km long Sumatra Fault. This study aims to analyze the focal mechanism of earthquakes in North Sumatra during the period 2018-2024 using data from the Global Centroid Moment Tensor (GCMT). The analysis focuses on determining the type of earthquake mechanism, fault plane orientation, and slip direction and characteristics based on 21 earthquake events with magnitudes ranging from 4.8 to 5.4 Mw, analyzed using parameters such as location, time, depth, and nodal plane orientation. The results of the study indicate that earthquakes occurring in North Sumatra are dominated by strike-slip faults with horizontal movement. The orientation of the fault planes generally points northwest-southeast (NW-SE) and northeast-southwest (NE-SW), consistent with the characteristics of the Sumatra Fault and its segments, such as Renun, Toru, Barumun, and Angkola. Most of the earthquakes occurred at shallow to intermediate depths, posing a potential risk of damage in densely populated areas. These findings are expected to enhance regional geotectonic understanding and support earthquake disaster mitigation strategies in North Sumatra.

Abstract

A tsunami is a natural disaster triggered by the vertical displacement of the seafloor following a major earthquake along a megathrust zone. Barus District lies within the active Sumatran megathrust, making it highly vulnerable to large earthquakes that could generate tsunamis. This study aims to map tsunami hazard and risk zones under a 16-meter wave scenario and to model evacuation routes using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing approaches. The research employs a descriptive quantitative method, integrating spatial data through overlay and network analysis techniques. The analysis revealed that high-hazard and high-risk zones each cover 0.64 km² out of the total 2.27 km², primarily located in Pasar Terandam and Pasar Batu Gerigis villages. Evacuation route modeling showed estimated travel times ranging from 25.06 to 65.73 minutes, assuming an average walking speed of 1.2 m/s. Among the designated shelters, the Catholic church offers a more efficient route, whereas evacuation to the HKBP church requires more than 60 minutes exceeding the ideal time limit. These findings highlight the urgent need to prioritize disaster mitigation strategies to ensure the effectiveness of tsunami evacuation systems in high-risk coastal areas.
