Abstract

Utilizing idle land as agricultural land is one option that can be pursued to support national food security and independence. Indonesia has various types of alternative food commodities that have the potential to be developed on nutrient-poor land, one of which is hanjeli. Technical cultivation is needed to increase the growth and yield of hanjeli on sub-optimal land. This study aims to determine the best planting distance to increase hanjeli production on idle land. The research was conducted from October 2020 - March 2021 in Limau Manis, Padang City, West Sumatra. The materials used in this study were rice cultivar hanjeli seeds, manure (20 tons/ha) and NPK fertilizer (200 kg/ha). The experimental design used was Randomized Group Design with 3 groups and consisted of 8 plant spacing treatments (40 x 40 cm, 50 x 40 cm, 50 x 50, 50 x 60 cm, 50 x 70 cm, 50 x 80 cm, 50 x 90 cm, and 50 x 100 cm). Observation data were analyzed statistically to determine the influential treatment using the F test at the 5% level and significantly different data were tested using the Duncan’s Multiple Range Test at the 5% level. It was concluded that the spacing of 50 x 70 cm, 50 x 80 cm, 50 x 90 cm and 50 x 100 cm gave the best effect on the number of total tillers/plant, the number of productive tillers/plant, the number of seeds/plant, the percentage of filled seeds, the weight of filled seeds/plant. As for productivity, the spacing of 50 x 80 cm gave the best results.

Abstract

Cocoa is a plantation commodity that is essential to the Indonesian economy. There are still many problems in cocoa cultivation found in the field, such as using poor-quality seedlings. One of the ways to do this is by taking preventive action by providing immunity induction from the seedling stage. Immunity induction can be done by utilizing Rhizobacteria, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, Entomopathogenic fungi, and vegetable pesticides. The Faculty of Agriculture of Universitas Andalas collaborated with the entrepreneurs through a Ministry of Education and Culture program, Matching Fund 2022, to make an innovation, namely the Teaching Farm for superior cocoa nurseries. This activity aims to socialize the cocoa nursery teaching farm in the hope of helping farmers prepare high-quality and sustainable cocoa seeds. This community service activity has been carried out at the Padang City Agriculture Office. The conclusions of this activity include: a) The community service program made by the Teaching Farm Team of Universitas Andalas is by the needs of the farmer group; the farmer group is satisfied and feels this service activity was helpful for the development of the Cocoa farmer group in the future, b) enrichment of understanding of farmer group members regarding biofertilizers and vegetable pesticides.

Abstract

Potatoes are crops that have economic value and are rich in benefits because they contain good and relatively beneficial substances. In the production of the Granola L potato variety, tissue culture propagation is used. Many factors affect the growth and development of potato plants, one of which is light. Light is needed by plants to perform photosynthesis, and the photosynthate will be distributed to all parts of the plant through the transport network. The purpose of this research is to see the effect of various light conditions on the growth of Granola L potato explants. The design used is a Completely Randomized Block Design with variance analysis and further testing using Duncan's Multiple Range Test. The treatments used are neon light (1000 lux) (A), room light (250 lux) (B), and no light (C). The variables observed were the number of living explants, plant height, number of leaves, and root length. Observations showed that the number of living explants is strongly influenced by the planting media and the environment, which must be sterile. For the variables of plant height and root length, the highest data were shown by treatment C compared to treatments A and B. This is because the explants experienced etiolation, leading to stem and root elongation. For the number of leaves, the highest data were shown by treatment A, followed by treatment B, and the lowest by treatment C. Therefore, for good growth, Granola L potato explants require light.

Abstract

The Taruko Saiyo Farmer Group is a community-based farmer initiative that comprises and grows based on harmony, warmth, and shared interests in utilizing agricultural resources to collaborate in improving the productivity of agricultural enterprises, especially in increasing rice production. Given the strong desire of the members of the Taruko Saiyo farmer group to tackle the issues arising from climate conditions and feeling the need to be accompanied due to a lack of science and technology knowledge regarding climate change mitigation and adaptation, it is appropriate as a partner to support the desires of these farmers and to provide guidance until they can master the science and technology and become an independent farmer group. The purpose of this project is: 1) To help farmers understand climate information and forecasts to support agricultural activities, particularly for planting season decisions and the right technical cultivation strategies as an effort to increase product quantity, 2) To enhance science and technology knowledge and management skills of farmers in managing agricultural waste as support for farming activities, as well as to form an awareness of climate conditions. This community service activity is carried out from June to September 2024. Some of the agendas in this climate field school program include socialization, training, application of science and technology, mentoring, and evaluation. Based on the evaluation results, around 90% of the partner members felt an increase of about ?80% in understanding, management, science and technology implementation, and production quantity. With ongoing support and active participation from various parties, it is hoped that this program can become a model for sustainable agriculture development.
