Abstract

Abstract. The decline in the quality of coral reef ecosystems is not only caused by human activities but also caused by competition in ecosystems, including competition for space and nutrients. Research on the comparison of coral reefs with macroalgae is one of the determinants of coral reef health which is the basis for the management of coral reefs with an ecosystem approach. The purpose of this study was to analyze the comparison of coral reef cover with macroalgae. The research method used is Line Intercept Transect (LIT), the research location is 13 stations divided into 3 locations, namely north, centre, and south from Ternate Island in North Maluku. The results showed that the condition of coral reefs ranged from 24 – 86.60%, based on the condition categories of 13 observation locations, the coral reefs of Ternate Island were in very good condition at 15.38%, good conditions at 46.16%, adequate conditions at 30.77%, and damaged conditions 7.69%, while the condition of macroalgae cover ranged from 0 - 30.60% in the area of coral reef ecosystems. The ratio of the of coral reefs to algae ranges from 0 to 1.117, based on the ratio value, it is classified as low, medium to high, spread in the coral reef ecosystem of Ternate Island. Coral reef management strategies on Ternate Island include a continuous monitoring program for coral reef ecosystems, education on coral reef ecosystems, creating a conscious community of waste, and limiting the capture and restoking of herbivorous fish in coral reef areas. Keywords: Coral reef, ecosystem approach management, macroalgae, Ternate Island

Abstract

Coral reef conservation has become a topic of growing global attention, in line with the increased awareness of the importance of coral reef ecosystems for marine life and humans. The establishment of environmentally conscious local communities requires a sustainable approach. Training, education, and community empowerment programs need to be implemented to enhance understanding of the importance of coral reefs and to engage the community in conservation efforts. The issue in the ecotourism area of Tobololo Village is the lack of groups or communities that care about coral reefs, mainly because the local community does not yet understand the functions and benefits of coral reef ecosystem services. Community service activities carried out in Tobololo Village included outreach and education, the formation of a local community, and the introduction of coral reefs. The results showed that the outreach activities educated the community about coral reefs, emphasizing that they are living organisms capable of reproduction and that they have both ecological and socio-economic functions and benefits. Additionally, a local community named KOMPAG (Komunitas Masyarakat Peduli Terumbu Karang) was established.

Abstract

This research aims to determine growth patterns, gonad maturity levels, gonad maturity index and size of first mature gonads. The research was carried out for 5 months starting from November 2023 to March 2024 with the sampling location at PPN Ternate. Data collection used the observation method (direct observation). The data was analyzed using Microsoft Excel. The results of the sex ratio for male and female escaped fish were 1: 1.36, indicating that the catch of fish was balanced at 1: 1. The results of the analysis of the relationship between length and weight showed that male and female escaped fish were allometrically negative, where there was a faster growth in length than weight gain. The level of gonad maturity in the yellowtail (Caesio sp.) (males and females) experienced the highest gonad maturity in March with the number of mature gonads in male fish amounting to 46,49% and the number of mature gonad in fish amounting to 54,04%. The hight gonad maturity indeks value in male and female escaped fish occurred in March. Based on analysis of the gonad maturity indeks (IKG), the fish with the highest TKG was found in TKG IV with a value of 1,8526. the avarage size of mature gonads for male fisht is 252 mm and famale fish is 243 mm.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the length distribution and sex ratio of bullet tuna (Auxis rochei) landed at Ternate Archipelago Fishing Port Ternate (PPN Ternate). Sampling was conducted in June and July 2024 with 100 fish per month. Observations included total length measurements and sex identification to determine size distribution patterns and sex composition. The results showed that male fish in June had the highest frequency at class interval of 190-201 mm, and in July it shifted to class interval 226-237 mm. Meanwhile, female fish in June were dominant in the class interval of 201-210 mm, and in July increased to the class interval of 231-230 mm. The sex ratio in June was 1:1.22 (male:female), while in July it was 1:0.82. The results of the chi-square test showed that the difference in sex ratio was not statistically significant (p > 0,05), so the population was considered to have a balanced sex composition. This finding is in line with several previous studies in the Indonesian region that showed variations in size structure and sex ratio of Auxis rochei influenced by seasonality, reproductive migration, and fishing activity. This study provides important basic information to support sustainable management of bullet tuna (Auxis rochei) resources in North Maluku waters.
