Abstract

The purpose of this study is to provide opportunities for teachers to gain, strengthen and increase knowledge and experience about online-based Japanese language learning models, explore online-based Japanese language learning models that can be used in their classroom contexts and apply learning models Japanese in their respective classes effectively. The target of this activity is Japanese language teachers at the SMA/SMK/MA level throughout Indonesia. This activity was carried out online through three webinars which were mapped into three stages. The first stage is the distribution of questionnaires containing questions regarding experiences of exploring and using online-based learning models before being given training. This stage was not carried out via webinar but was collected via a Google form which was sent to the participants. The data was processed to obtain their background regarding their experience of using online-based Japanese language learning models in their respective schools. The second stage included two webinars that presented presentations and simulations from experts and practitioners of online-based Japanese language learning models, especially in teaching letters, vocabulary, grammar and skills including listening, reading, writing and speaking. The final stage is practice in the form of a simulation for the participants in using online-based Japanese language learning models which have been presented in two webinars. At the end of the activity, a questionnaire containing questions about experiences and impressions of using online-based learning models after training will be distributed. Through this training activity, it is hoped that Japanese language teachers in Indonesia can apply existing online-based learning models effectively so that the predetermined learning competencies can be achieved and students become competent in Japanese.

Abstract

Abstract   This study investigates the nonverbal communication practices experienced by Indonesian internship students in Japanese companies during the 2023–2024 period, with internship durations ranging from six months to one year. The research aims to identify the types of nonverbal communication employed, the contextual circumstances under which they occur, and the challenges faced by interns in adapting to a cross-cultural work environment. Utilizing a qualitative methodology, this study draws on participant observation and in-depth interviews with selected internship participants. The findings indicate that interns encountered significant challenges in interpreting and adjusting to Japanese nonverbal norms, particularly in facial expressions, body gestures, and the use of personal space. The study identified 19 common nonverbal gestures and 4 gestures categorized as informal or slang. These results underscore the critical role of nonverbal communication in intercultural interactions and highlight its implications for the development of intercultural competence and the success of students in international work settings. Abstract

Paralinguistics forms an essential part of nonverbal communication and plays a crucial role in shaping meaning within intercultural contexts. Grounded in Poyatos’ (2002) framework of paralinguistic aspects, this study examines how paralinguistic features are realized in the interactions of an Indonesian Japanese married couple through their vlog. Using a qualitative descriptive approach with note-taking techniques, the research identifies and analyzes features such as voice volume, pitch, tempo, pauses, drawling, and clipping. The findings reveal distinct tendencies that reflect each speaker’s cultural background. The Indonesian speaker, Diera, often employs soft loudness, higher pitch, drawling, and frequent pauses, expressing warmth and enthusiasm characteristic of Indonesian communicative norms. Her Japanese husband, by contrast, displays a slower tempo, moderate volume, and subtle pitch variation—traits associated with calmness, politeness, and harmony in Japanese communication. These contrasting yet complementary paralinguistic patterns demonstrate how intercultural couples negotiate meaning and emotional expression through nonverbal cues. The study highlights the significance of understanding paralinguistic elements in cross-cultural communication, particularly for enhancing mutual comprehension, preventing misinterpretation, and fostering more effective interaction across cultural boundaries.

Abstract

Abstract

Japan's rural depopulation has emerged as a critical socio demographic issue closely intertwined with population aging and sustained urban migration, and within Nihonjijo education it provides an authentic and socially grounded context for cultivating students' critical engagement with contemporary Japanese society, enabling to move beyond descriptive cultural knowledge toward higher-order thinking. This study investigate how undergraduate students apply Paul and Elder's critical Thinking framework when engaging with the depopulation case of Kofu Town, Tottori, Prefecture. Data comprised thirty Indonesian language essays (approximately 400 -500 words each) produced by students enrolled in a Nihonjijo Course at UNIKOM Bandung. Using qualitative content analysis, essays were classified  into six cognitive stages. Knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, and action. The findings show that students reached the action stage, higher-level responses were characterised by contextual interpretation of datam integration of multiple information sources, and comparative reflection linking Japan's condition with parallel challenges in Indonesia. Overall, the results suggest that Nihonjijo learning can function as a pedagogixal space for developing socio-cultural awareness and reflective reasoning rather than merely transmitting factual content, and the study therefore recommends the explicit embedding of critical thinking frameworks in course design, the use of inquiry-based learning activities, and assesment practices oriented toward analytical and reflective outputs; future research should explore the longitudinal effects of sustained critical thinking instruction across multiple Nihonjijo courses,
