Abstract

Vocabulary has an important role in language learning at the college level, but in teaching practice, various obstacles are experienced by lecturers in implementing effective vocabulary learning. This study took place in Batam, Indonesia, and aims to investigate the English lecturers’ beliefs and practices in vocabulary learning; the phenomena of how they negotiate their teaching practices and what determines their choice of teaching methods when it comes to vocabulary learning. Five English lecturers from different universities were interviewed. The results of the interview were transcribed and analyzed based on the themes that appeared from data. The results showed that a requirement for practicality in class, curriculum, student atmosphere, and lecturers’ confidence in applying the right methods have effects on vocabulary learning. Lecturers have combined vocabulary learning with reading, writing, listening, and speaking in class. The main reference of a coursebook as the main guidance of the vocabulary learning varied between one class and another. All lecturers stated that they should find their own way to adopt external sources such as songs, vocabulary learning programs, and games to combine with their coursebook to beneficially meet the students’ preference. The new technology of teaching and learning is now part of classroom activities. Henceforth, this study concludes that the lecturers’ beliefs in the vocabulary learning approach are important. In practice, the lecturers need to combine them with various methods as the class situation do not always count on academic interests.

Abstract

Public speaking is not only about sharing information but also about pointing out the speakers’ intentions. There is the meaning should be understood by the hearers. This study discusses the illocutionary speech acts in the students’ public speaking in English Department. This study aims to determine the types of illocutionary speech acts in a formative speech in the sixth semester of the English language education study program at Pasir Pengaraian University. This study was descriptive qualitative. The sample of this research was the sixth-semester students of the English education study program at Pasir Pengarain University. The samples were taken by using the total sample. There were 22 students. The data of this study were obtained using the listening and note-taking technique design about the meaning of utterances containing. The data were analyzed by using Austin's Theory. The result showed three illocutionary speech acts: ten assertiveness, eight directive, four declarative, three commissives, and ten expressive.

Abstract

Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris memiliki himpunan mahasiswa bahasa Inggris (ESSA) dimana seluruh mahasiswa Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris mengikuti program kerja yang selaras dengan visi dan misi program untuk memberikan ruang bagi mahasiswa untuk berinovasi, berkreasi, dan mengembangkan bakat dan keterampilan masing-masing. Tahun ini merupakan tahun kedua Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris berkonsentrasi pada program bekerja sama dengan para siswanya dalam mengikuti program Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka. Mahasiswa masih belum mengetahui segala hal yang perlu diketahui tentang berbagai kegiatan MBKM, baik yang akan dilakukan setiap semester maupun yang akan mereka lakukan. Himpunan mahasiswa Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris akan menjadi mitra sasaran kegiatan layanan MBKM tahun 2022. Workshop digunakan untuk mengimplementasikan MBKM dengan tujuan menjadikan lulusan dan mahasiswa lebih kompeten baik soft skill maupun hard skill yang bekerja sama dengan kegiatan MBKM. Hal ini akan menjadikan lulusan dan mahasiswa lebih siap dan lebih relevan dengan kebutuhan saat ini, menjadikan lulusan dan mahasiswa sebagai pemimpin masa depan bangsa yang unggul dan memiliki kepribadian. Program pembelajaran berdasarkan pengalaman dengan jalur yang dapat beradaptasi seharusnya bekerja dengan siswa untuk menumbuhkan kapasitas mereka yang sebenarnya sesuai dengan antusiasme dan kemampuan mereka melalui latihan MBKM yang diiklankan.

Abstract

Himpunan Pendidikan Bahasa Prodi Bahasa Inggris berupaya mengaktifkan program kerja himpunan mahasiswa di era perubahan yang mulai membaik pasca pandemi Covid-19 guna mencetak karakter mahasiswa dengan soft skill yang berkembang di masa depan. Perhimpunan mahasiswa ini menghadapi berbagai tantangan, antara lain sering merasa resah ketika tampil di depan umum dan kurangnya pengawasan terhadap tumbuhnya minat dan bakat mahasiswa. Alhasil, tim pengabdian masyarakat program studi pendidikan bahasa Inggris Universitas Pasir Pengaraian mengadakan pelatihan untuk membantu mahasiswa belajar lebih banyak tentang berbicara di depan umum. Gerakan persiapan ini dilakukan dalam suatu konfigurasi pemeriksaan dan penilaian yang dilakukan baik secara kuantitatif maupun subyektif. Peserta pelatihan terbukti lebih percaya diri berbicara di depan umum setelah mengikuti pelatihan karena mereka lebih memahami tata cara berbicara di depan umum. Terbukti bahwa pengetahuan dan keterampilan telah meningkat sebagai hasil dari pelatihan ini.

Abstract

This study explains students’ anxiety in public speaking at the second semester of the Mechanical Engineering Study Program. The purpose of this study was to describe the contributing factors that cause students to experience such condition. The participants in this study consisted of 22 students. This study used descriptive quantitative. The instruments used in the study were questionnaires. The questionnaire was the FCLAS (Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale).The data were analyzed using a Likert scale to determine the factors that cause students' anxiety in public speaking. The results show that the factors that cause student anxiety in public speaking are internal factors and external factors. It shows the mean score of the level of students' anxiety , where the percentage of the two factors, namely internal factors, is 51% and external factors are 49% of the highest score of 100% points and the total number of questions was 33 numbers. Most correspondents are in the middle anxious classification with a median total of 3 points in both factors.

Abstract

There are four focus in pursuing language, which is Speaking, Writing, Listening and Reading. The Speaking skill commonly used as a sole way to interact and communicate with another individual in daily basis or even in more formal basis like academic or even business. But still students still tend to have anxiety when speaking in another language because of several causes and reason. Therefore, this research aims to identify what is the cause and type of the problems of anxiety at English Language Education (ELE) students Universitas Internasional Batam. This study conducted qualitative method for the research. The research instruments were questionnaires. To extend the deeper analysis, this study also conducted an in-dept interview adopted from SLSAS Woodrow (2006) and FLCAS by Horwitz et al. (1986). From the result the researcher can define the types and causes of the ELE students speaking anxiety at Universitas Internasional Batam. Therefore, the learning process at English Language Education needs to be equipped with sufficient linguistic competences, such as grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary.

Abstract

The lecturers still seem unconfidence to teach English as Foreign Language. They need the learning material to reveal the gap between English and the student’s own culture. This study aims to find out the validity and reliability of the intercultural learning material for Drama subject. The research design was quantitative research. The instrumentation of this research was the questionnaire. The subject of this research was 29 students. The results showed that the validity of the ILM model was 92,5 %. It means that the ILM model is valid to use for Drama subject. Then, reliability of intercultural learning materials was 0.774; the ILM model is reliable to use for Drama subject. Based on this result, the intercultural learning materials can implemented because they were categorized as valid and reliable. Thus, the learning materials will be an alternative to link between English and Malay cultures in the lesson process and drama performances.

Abstract

This thesis was an implemented linguistics observe regarded from wishes evaluation. The researcher analyzed the tourism personnel who labored inside the tourism and subculture branch of Rokan Hulu, Riau Indonesia. Instruments of the research were questionnaire and interview. The targets of this observe were (1) to find out the needs of tourism personnel in English language the use of their administrative center and (2) to find out the problems that the tourism personnel come across while the usage of English language abilities of their activity. This thesis dependent as the sector studies the usage of qualitative approach as in consists of a form of academic studies that includes accumulating statistics the use of forms containing not unusual pop-up questions, accumulating phrase or picture statistics, and accumulating statistics from a small variety of humans or locations. The outcomes of the evaluation listening and speaking are maximum essential English talent of tourism personnel in Rokan Hulu's tourism and subculture branch, however it's also taken into consideration because the maximum complex to them. The tourism personnel in the department of tourism and subculture in Rokan Hulu has fewer problem in reading and writing abilities.

Abstract

The abilities of students’ public speaking are different at some level. This study investigates the students’ speaking skills in describing people in the Non-English Department. The type of this research was a quantitative descriptive study design. The instrument of this study was the test; the type of the test was public speaking in describing people. The population of this study was 37 students in the 2nd semester of sports and health education. The sampling technique was total sampling. The sample was 37 students. Primarily based on the result, the researcher discovered that one student  (2%) has a good score, 17 students (46%) have an average rating, and 19 college students (51%) have a fair rating. It means that the score of students' speaking skills in describing humans became a truthful stage. It brought about mispronunciation of phrases (body, eyes, nose, and colour), messy grammar, lack of vocabulary, fluency gradual, and comprehension most effective a little and quite simple.
