Abstract

Colonial trauma has left a lasting imprint on postcolonial literature, shaping narratives of displacement, resistance, and cultural transformation. This study examines Kofi Awoonor's The Weaver Bird using a cognitive stylistic approach to uncover the mental processes influencing readers' perceptions of colonialism. African poetry remains underexplored in cognitive stylistics, making this study significant in broadening the scope of literary analysis. By integrating Conceptual Metaphor Theory and Conceptual Blending Theory, this research explores how Awoonor's language constructs an embodied experience of loss and perseverance. Employing a qualitative method, the study conducts a close textual analysis to identify cognitive mechanisms shaping meaning in the poem. Findings reveal that metaphorical structures trigger cognitive processes that reinforce postcolonial awareness and collective identity. This study contributes to both literary and psychological research by demonstrating how poetry functions as a cognitive tool in processing historical realities. Its implications suggest that literature is not merely a reflection of history but an active force in shaping thought, memory, and resistance.

Abstract

Abstract

This study investigates the phenomenon of code-switching in sad post captions on TikTok, focusing on its types, contexts, and communicative functions. Although code switching on digital platforms has been widely studied, the switching context remains underexplored. Using a qualitative descriptive approach with content analysis, this study examines 29 sad-related TikTok captions collected between 2022 and 2025. The analysis is guided by Muysken’s typology, Blom and Gumperz’s contextual categorization, and the functional frameworks of Gumperz and Wardhaugh. The findings show that alternation is the most frequent type of code-switching, indicating frequent shifts between Indonesian and English across clauses. Contextually, metaphorical switching predominates, suggesting that code switching is strongly driven by emotional emphasis. Functionally, message qualification and affective expression dominate, indicating that code switching primarily serves to intensify emotional meaning rather than to convey informational content. This study contributes to sociolinguistics, highlighting how Indonesian bilingual users perform code-switching on TikTok as a strategic medium for emotional expression, identity performance, and digital self-representation.

Abstract

The increasing use of conversational artificial intelligence in casual and academic communication raises significant questions about how such systems create interpersonal meaning through language. Limited research has been conducted in terms of linguistic mechanisms through which interpersonal relationships are established across different registers. Addressing this gap, the current study explores how ChatGPT creates interpersonal meaning in informal and formal academic interactions through the lens of the systemic functional linguistics (SFL) framework. This qualitative SFL-based analysis research examines 10 ChatGPT-generated responses to prompts that were purposely designed, comprising five casual and five academic interactions that were broken down into 86 clauses and analyzed through the lens of the interpersonal metafunction, focusing on mood, modality, and appraisal, facilitated by register theory and the three dimensions of human-machine communication (HMC). The findings reveal a clear variation in the use of ChatGPT's interpersonal strategies depending on the register. Casual interactions exhibit a higher number of appraisal resources, especially affect and engagement, which reflect a relational and user-oriented stance. In contrast, academic interactions are described by the predominance of declarative mood and medium to high. This study provides insight into how AI imitates human behavior, such as interactional roles through language selection. The findings highlight the importance of register sensitivity in AI-human communication and have implications for linguistics, language education, and chatbot design. It is suggested that further studies should consider investigating larger datasets, more registers, and comparative analyses of different AI models.

Abstract

In August 2025, Indonesia witnessed widespread protests across major cities as public anger grew over worsening economic conditions and controversial benefits granted to lawmakers. The demonstrations, initially sparked by a new Rp50 million (US$3,000) monthly housing allowance for members of parliament, quickly developed into broader demands for transparency, fair governance, and accountability. Following the death of a civilian, Affan Kurniawan, during a police operation, the protests intensified and drew significant international media attention, making them a compelling case for examining how global news outlets represent political unrest. This study analyzes how four major international media organizations CNN, The Guardian, Al Jazeera, and Euro News portrayed these events using Halliday’s Transitivity System within the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL). A total of 489 processes were identified and classified into Material, Verbal, Relational, Mental, and Behavioral types. The findings show that Material processes dominate across all articles, emphasizing physical actions and observable events. However, differences in word choice reflect each outlet’s distinct style: CNN stresses conflict and immediacy, The Guardian focuses on institutional context, Al Jazeera highlights emotion and human experience, and Euro News maintains factual neutrality. These results illustrate that linguistic selection not only reports events but also constructs ideological perspectives within global media discourse.

Abstract

Gender stereotypes that are developed in the society influence people’s thoughts and behavior. Schools contribute the socialization of gender through textbooks or interaction between teachers and students. Textbooks are extremely important in forming students' values, ideologies, and social norms. They are also acknowledged for having a major impact on how students' gender roles develop, especially in elementary school. Language use and social lives of pupils may be impacted by gender representation. The textbook material they study accounts for half of the influence. Children have access to a wealth of knowledge regarding behavior, characteristics, and social roles that are proper for each gender that are portrayed in textbooks. This research was aimed to see how gender represented according to the three social context parameters such as family, occupation, and leisure activities were used to perform Examining the gender portrayals of male and female characters in the Super Minds 6 English textbook. This research used qualitative and quantitative research methods and employed Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) theory as the method of analysis. In conjunction with CDA, Giaschi's Visual Grammar theory is also used as an analytical tool to explain the depiction of gender representation in the textbook. Based on the findings, there are more male pictures than female pictures.

Abstract

This paper reviewed code-mixing and code-switching along with the worldwide recognition of K-Pop songs by analyzing the English usage of "Hype Boy" and "OMG" by New Jeans, a fourth-generation K-Pop group. All songs were examined using Muysken's (2000) code-mixing theory, Stockwell's (2007) code-switching theory, and Fernandez-Martinez et al.'s (2014) and Kwon's (2019) comment analysis. The results revealed that the majority of code-mixing in "Hype Boy" was insertion and the majority of code-mixing in "OMG" was alternation, but there was no congruent lexicalization found in the two songs. However, the majority of code switches in "Hype Boy" were inter-sentential, whereas "OMG" was intra-sentential, and two tag-switching data were found. Aside from that, based on audience responses in the comment section, the audience responses showed up that they were impacted by the singers' word pronunciation errors, however, a lot were also impressed with their easy-to-listen-to songs. The study finds that the accurate pronunciation and the new English language switching function seem to have played a significant role in the success of "Hype Boy" and "OMG" among bilingual audiences.
