Abstract

Mangrove land transformation refers to the change in mangrove land use from its original condition to a different form, which often involves the conversion of mangrove land into other land uses that are more used by humans. Some of the consequences of mangrove transformation are the loss of habitats that are important for various types of organisms, including fish, birds, and crustaceans. This can result in a decrease in biodiversity and even the extinction of certain species, mangrove areas are more susceptible to abrasion, deterioration of water quality, reduced green open space for water catchment areas, drought, lack of oxygen levels and impact on people's livelihoods Many people living around mangrove forests depend on these ecosystems for their livelihoods, such as fishermen and collectors of non-timber forest products. The conversion of mangrove land can threaten the sustainability of their livelihoods. The use of mangrove land in Medan Belawan, Medan Labuhan and Medan Marelan Districts continues to change to other land uses, this study aims to examine the dynamics of mangrove land transformation based on policies from time to time, examine the change of mangrove land use in Medan Belawan, Medan Labuhan and Medan Marelan Districts and examine the suitability of the implementation of the RTRW spatial polar plan to the use of existing mangrove land. The method used in this study is qualitative descriptive, the research is carried out through a survey of changes in mangrove land use and identified through data processing with the Geographic Information System.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze land use changes in Medan Marelan District in 2004, 2014, and 2024 and identify the suitability of existing land use with the Medan City Regional Spatial Plan (RTRW) policy. The research method used is qualitative descriptive with a spatial approach based on Geographic Information System (GIS). Data was collected through primary and secondary surveys, including satellite imagery, administrative maps, and demographic data. The results of the study showed that there was a significant change in land use in Medan Marelan District during the study period, especially the increase in residential and industrial areas. The superimpose analysis shows that most of the existing land use is in accordance with the RTRW, although there are some irregularities. Factors such as the number of population, land value, distance to the city center, and the number of public facilities contribute significantly to the development of the area. In accordance with the results of the SWOT analysis, there are several strategies in this study, one of which is utilizing the power of technology and data to design a more accurate and sustainable spatial plan policy that considers the history of the area in Medan Marelan District. The conclusion of this study is the importance of Regional Space (RTRW) periodically to effectively manage the development of peri-urban areas. It is also recommended that there be community involvement in spatial planning to increase the suitability of land allocation with the Regional Spatial Plan policy.

Abstract

The sustainability of urban development in Medan City is greatly influenced by the availability of Green Open Space (RTH) that can support environmental quality and the quality of life of the community. Medan City, as a city with a high level of urbanization and increasing population density, faces challenges in providing sufficient green space. The mismatch between the allocation of RTH in the Regional Spatial Plan (RTRW) and the existing land use conditions, as well as the limited space for RTH development in densely populated areas, are the main factors in the decline in environmental quality. Limited RTH reduces the ability of urban ecosystems to manage air pollution, temperature, and rainwater absorption. In addition, limited RTH also has a negative impact on the physical and mental health of the community. Therefore, efforts to increase the availability of RTH need to be carried out with an approach that involves the development of vertical green spaces, small city parks, rehabilitation of abandoned spaces, and improvement of spatial planning policies. This study aims to analyze the importance of the role of RTH in the sustainability of urban area development and the solutions that can be applied to achieve it, in order to create a greener, healthier, and more sustainable city environment.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the suitability of Green Open Space (RTH) land in Medan City based on the established Regional Spatial Plan (RTRW). Along with the rapid development of urbanization, land conversion, and increasing space needs in urban areas, Medan City faces challenges in maintaining and allocating RTH according to applicable standards. In this study, an analysis of land distribution in various sub-districts in Medan City was conducted to identify the suitability between the existing RTH area and the provisions of the RTRW. Data is processed using Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to produce accurate spatial visualization related to RTH allocation. The results of the study show that several sub-districts have green open space areas that are still below the standards set in the RTRW. Factors contributing to this mismatch include urbanization pressure, land conversion for industrial and residential purposes, and lack of supervision in the implementation of the RTRW. To address this problem, the study recommends strategies to increase green open space suitability through strengthening regulations, utilizing GIS technology for land monitoring, incentives for land owners, multi-sector collaboration, and adaptive RTRW revisions. With the implementation of this strategy, it is hoped that Medan City can improve the suitability of green open space according to the RTRW, which not only provides ecological benefits, but also supports sustainable urban development and improves the quality of life of the community.

Abstract

The development of a region is greatly influenced by the development of settlements to accommodate the population in the region. Settlement problems often occur due to lack of settlement development planning, resulting in a decline in the quality of settlements. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct an analysis of settlement development. This study was conducted in the scope of Karo Regency which aims to analyze potential land to be used as a settlement area in Karo Regency. The approach used in this study is descriptive qualitative using the superimpose analysis method (overlay) and SWOT analysis. The superimpose method is carried out by overlaying a physical map of the region, and areas that have the potential to be protected. So that it produces a direction for the potential development of the settlement area. The research results show that the limited area of 128,127.81 hectares can be pushed into protected areas and agricultural areas,The constraint area of 44,812.12 Ha is a constraint area that can be developed in a limited way as residential development, and the potential area of 45,791.61 Ha is a potential area that is highly recommended as land for built-up or residential development.

Abstract

The increase in population triggers demand for land for residence and other activities. Urban spatial planning often lags behind increasing physical development needs, causing uncontrolled expansion of urban development and causing limited green open space. Urban green open spaces are very important for environmental sustainability, including maintaining ecosystem balance, improving air quality, and providing social space. However, the allocation of green open space in the 2015-2035 Medan City spatial planning regulations is still below the 20% target, only reaching 11.10%. Conflicts regarding permits for the use of built-up land as green open space are a frequent problem. The disclosure of empirical facts about the dynamics of the implementation of the green open space plan in Medan City can be a more comprehensive input for the Medan City Government in the 2015-2035 Medan City RDTR Revision and become a consideration for the districts/other cities to plan green open space that is fair and provides additional insight for academics, practitioners and the general public. The research uses descriptive-qualitative methods on empirical facts with spatial exploration based on the Geographic Information System using the ArcGIS 10.8 application and the Google Maps Platform to identify and analyze the realization of the implementation of green open space plans which provide various empirical facts. Data analysis is carried out spatially through technical interpretation of satellite images and overlays on several spatial research themes. The results of this paper show that the green open space plan in Medan City is dominated by undeveloped land, such as 28.50% of ponds/ponds which are not land with green open space functions, and can create dynamics in the provision of green open space. Strategies for resolving green open space problems include optimizing land acquisition, controlling urbanization, regulating land price speculation, public education, and developing green open space to mitigate environmental impacts, and involve the formation of special teams, periodic evaluations, and strong public participation.

Abstract

The Old City area of Pekan Labuhan in Medan, once the center of the Deli Sultanate (1728–1888), has lost its appeal due to poor environmental and cultural maintenance. The Deli River, once the city's lifeline, has also experienced physical, chemical, and biological degradation. The Medan city government plans to designate this area as a cultural and nature reserve under Regional Regulation No. 1 of 2022, focusing on preserving historical and cultural values to support history-based tourism and strengthen local identity. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method, combining field observations and literature reviews. Key issues identified include limited communal parking, poor pedestrian infrastructure, neglected buildings, and the conversion of historical structures. Solutions based on the Urban Heritage concept include creating visitor parking areas, vertical gardens, signage, riverbank open spaces, revitalizing Chinese heritage buildings, and improving pedestrian pathways. Nonphysical strategies involve engaging youth, fostering public-private partnerships, organizing annual events, promoting local products, and marketing the area through social media. In conclusion, zoning that integrates tourism with historical preservation is essential. By applying heritage principles and developing urban heritage tourism, the Old City can present its rich past as a modern attraction. This Urban Heritage Concept aims to serve as a model for managing heritage sites across Indonesia.
