Abstract

This study aims to describe the factors that support students' ability in the learning process to speak using video. This research was classroom action research. Classroom action research was done in four steps: planning, action, observation, and reflection. Quantitative data was gained from the score of the student's speaking test. The test was given at the end of every cycle. The qualitative data was collected through the result of observation. It described the factors that support the students' ability to speak based on the result observation from the collaborator activities both the students and the researcher itself. The research aimed to explain how video can increase students' speaking skills in the second semester of the English Education Study Program for IKIP Gunungsitoli. Using video can increase students' skills in speaking. Quantitative data support it included test results in every cycle. The quantitative data show that students have improved speaking skills in every cycle using video and reaching the indicator of success. The students' ability to speak cannot pass the score standard in the cycle because most students cannot convey their ideas about the material. However, in cycle II, there is increasing in student's ability to speak. The quantitative data also is supported by the qualitative data through observation results. The observation sheet result describes that the students' activities improved every meeting by using video.

Abstract

Writing is one of the four language skills that should be mastered by students. The syllabus of SMP Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli Barat expects the students to be able to compiling the narrative text in the form of personal experience. The purpose of the research was describing the students’ writing ability in narrative text and the factors affecting it. The method used in the research was descriptive qualitative. The analysis of the data was conducted by following steps. Analyzing the quantitative data by using analytic scoring rubric from Glenceo namely, focus/organization, elaboration/support/style, and grammar and mechanics and analyzing the qualitative data through transcripts of structure interviews. Furthermore, the informant of the research was class VIII-A students of SMP Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli Barat which consisted of 20 students. The data were collected through documentary data of students’ worksheets and interview both students and English teacher. The result showed that the students’ ability in writing narrative text was in Good category (66 score). It is proved by the findings that there were 7 students (35%) included in ‘Excellent’ category, there were 4 students (20%) included ‘Good category, there were 3 students (15%) included ‘Fairy’ category and category included in ‘Poor’ were 6 students (30%). Furthermore, the factors that affect the students’ ability in writing narrative text were: students cognitive it was problem organization, less motivation, lack of grammar, lack of practice and the influence of the first language (L1) on writing in English.

Abstract

Writing is  a transaction with words whereby someone free his self from what he presently think, feel and perceive. In learning writing, most of the students could not achieve the MCC. There were some problems faced by the students in studying writing descriptive text at the tenth grade of SMK Swasta BNKP Daro-daro Balaekha Lahusa in 2020/2021 namely: the students were lack of vocabularies. The students were unable to describe the object. The students were unable to identify topic, main idea, content from descriptive text. Therefore, to overcome the problems, the researcher conducted a research by using Board Game at the Tenth Grade of SMK Swasta BNKP Daro-daro Balaekha Lahusa in 2020/2021. The purpose of the research is to increase the students’ ability in writing descriptive text. In increasing the students’ writing descriptive text, the researcher used Board Game and applied as Classroom Action Research (CAR). The  research has been conducted in two cycles, which each cycle consisted of two meetings, there were four steps in conducting the research namely (1) Planning, (2) Action, (3) Observation (4) Reflection. The result of the data in Cycle I that the average score was 44.64, the maximum score was 7.14 and the minimum score was 50. While in Cycle II the average score was 82.14; the maximum score was 72 and the minimum score was 28. From the result of the research, It can be concluded that Board Game Increase the Students’ Ability Writing Descriptive Text at the Tenth Grade of SMK Swasta BNKP Daro-daro Balaekha Lahusa in 2020/2021.
