Abstract

The aim of this research is to determine the effect of bentonite-Titanium dioxide (Benonite-TiO2) composite on the degradation process of methylene blue. It was carried out by synthesizing the composite through the impregnation of Titanium dioxide (TiO2) on bentonite and then characterizing the obtained compound using XRD and SEM-EDX. The results of the XRD characterization showed that there was a shift in the diffraction angle (2θ), which indicated the success of the impregnation procedure. The morphology of the composite showed that the bentonite surface had been filled with TiO2, as evidenced by the results of the EDX analysis, which showed a 7.03% increase in Titanium. Furthermore, the degradation process was carried out using various variables, including contact time, the ratio of composite weight to dye, and by irradiation with a UV lamp at a wavelength of 352 nm UV. It was discovered that the best degradation in the concentration of methylene blue occurred at a maximum contact time of 90 minutes and at a maximum weight of 10 mg of benonite-TiO2, with an effectiveness of 99.91% after irradiation and 92.26% without irradiation.

Abstract

Cellulose, a natural biopolymer produced by plants, undergoes enzymatic breakdown by cellulase, cleaving the monomer's β-1,4 glycosidic bonds. Cellulolytic bacteria, producers of cellulase, can be isolated from plant rhizospheres, like Ketapang (Terminalia catappa L.), abundantly found in the Biology Department at Universitas Sriwijaya, South Sumatra, Indonesia. This study aimed to isolate cellulolytic bacteria from Ketapang rhizosphere soil and assess their cellulase activity. The spread plate method on selective Carboxy Methyl Cellulose Agar (CMC agar) was used for bacterial isolation, and cellulase activity was measured using the DNS method (3.5-dinitro salicylic acid). Results yielded 22 isolates of cellulolytic bacteria capable of growth on selective CMC agar. Thirteen isolates, identified through a screening test, produced cellulase, forming clear zones post-addition of 0.1% Congo Red and 1 M NaCl. Cellulolytic activity indices for these isolates ranged from 0.02 to 2.6 mm. The highest indices (IAS) and cellulase activities were observed in BS10, BS4, and BS22, with IAS values of 2.64, 2.12, and 1.71, and cellulase activities of 354.99 U/ml, 9.42 U/ml, and 9 U/ml, respectively. Identification results suggested that isolate BS10 bore similarities to the genus Zoogloea, while isolates BS4 and BS22 showed similarities to the genus Bacillus.

Abstract

Abstract

This study modified current bentonite with zinc oxide (ZnO) and investigated the performance of phenol adsorption. The material bentonite-ZnO was successfully synthesized and characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX), and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR). The adsorption performance was determined by adsorption equilibrium, kinetics, and thermodynamic parameters. The adsorption, kinetic, and thermodynamic parameters were compared alternatively. The phenol adsorption capacity was obtained from Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models, which for bentonite-ZnO was fit with both isotherm models (Langmuir R2 = 0,997 and Freundlich R2 = 0,9515) and was favorable than activated bentonite (n value bentonite-ZnO = 2.389; activated bentonite = 0,898). A kinetic model was tested with pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intraparticle diffusion models which bentonite-ZnO and activated bentonite fit in the pseudo-second-order with an excellent agreement (R2 = 0,999). Several thermodynamic parameters such as enthalpy, Gibbs free energy, and bentonite-ZnO have an entropy more than zero (ΔS = 0.008 J/molK), which demonstrated the feasibility and spontaneity (ΔG < 0) and endothermic nature (ΔH = 3,056 kJ/mol) of the phenol adsorption process. Based on the result data in this article, modified bentonite with ZnO has increased the ability for phenol adsorption than currently activated bentoniteKeywords: bentonite, adsorption equilibrium, adsorption kinetics, thermodynamics model, phenol, bentonite-ZnO

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a serious health problem with an increasing number of sufferers. In this context, an important method for controlling blood sugar levels is the derivation of α-amylase enzyme inhibitors from natural materials such as endophytic fungi. Therefore, this research aimed to analyze the potential of endophytic fungi from Tithonia diversifolia leaves as α-amylase enzyme inhibitors, secondary metabolites, as well as the character and identity of potential endophytic fungi. The stages included isolation and identification of endophytic fungi, extraction of secondary metabolites, α-amylase inhibition tests, analysis of bioactive compounds using Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC), and identification of potential endophytic fungi. The results showed that DT3J1 (67.83 µg/mL), DM3J1 (69.36 µg/mL), DT2J2 (80.42 µg/mL), and DT4J1 (88.64 µg/mL) of the eight endophytic fungi isolates reported high potential as inhibitors of the α-amylase enzyme, with IC50 values classified as strong. Potential fungal extracts contain bioactive compounds such as alkaloids, flavonoids, phenols, and terpenoids. Meanwhile, molecular identification showed that potential endophytic fungi consisted of Curvularia pseudointermedia, Diaporthe passifloricola, Nodulisporium verrucosum, and Muyocopron laterale species. This research also provided scientific evidence on the potential of the endophytic fungus Tithonia diversifolia as a candidate for antidiabetic drugs.
