Abstract

Speaking is expressing ideas, feelings, and desires that need to be represented to others in the form of speech. The research aimed to describe the student's ability to speak and to find out the reasons for students' ability to describe a person through describing and drawing techniques in the eighth grade of SMP Swasta Bunga Mawar. The method used in the research was the qualitative method. The participants were 16 students in the eighth grade of SMP Swasta Bunga Mawar. The instruments used to get the data were tests, interviews, and observations. After obtaining the data, the researcher analyzed them using quantitative and qualitative techniques. The results showed that in the students' ability to speak through describing and drawing techniques, two students (12.5%) achieved outstanding category, seven students (44%) achieved good category, six students (37.5%) achieved enough category, and one student (6%) achieved less category. Then, the reasons students' ability to describe people through describing and drawing technique because this technique has eleven advantages: enhances students' vocabulary, makes learning more attractive, makes students interact with their friends, motivates them to speak, encourages them to be active in learning, enthusiastic, enhance their self-confidence, comfortable, the learning process not stuffy, convenient to describe something, and excite them to speak fluently. So, it can be concluded that the student's ability to talk through describing and drawing techniques in the eighth grade of SMP Swasta Bunga Mawar was good. The researcher suggests that teachers use this technique when teaching speaking.

Abstract

There were some problems that students faced when speaking, such as: difficult in conveying their ideas, lack of vocabulary, incorrect pronunciation, and the strategy that used by the teacher that monotonous and boring. The purpose of this research was to improve the students' speaking skills through Talking Stick Strategy at the tenth grade of SMK Negeri 2 Gunungsitoli in 2022/2023. The researcher conducted this research by using Classroom Action Research (CAR). Instrument of the research were observation sheets, field notes and oral test. In Cycle I, the average percentage of the researcher's completed activities was 79% (good), and the percentage of the students' completed activities was 72.5% (adequate). In this cycle, the students could not achieve the Minimum Competence Criterion (MCC) of 70, students' average score was 51 (less). All the students scored ≤ 70, with the highest score was 63 and the lowest score was 38. Furthermore, in Cycle II, the average percentage of the researcher's completed activities was 95% (very good), and the students' completed activities was 91% (very good). In this cycle, the students had achieved the Minimum Competence Criterion (MCC) of 70, the students' average score was 79 (good). None of the students scored ≤ 70, with the highest score was 81 and the lowest score was 75. Based on the results of this research, the researcher concluded that Talking Stick Strategy could improve the students' speaking skill in the tenth grade of SMK Negeri 2 Gunungsitoli in 2022/2023.

Abstract

This research aims to improve the descriptive text writing skills of seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Lolofitu Moi through the use of picture media. The background of this research is the students’ low ability in writing descriptive texts in accordance with structure and language rules. The research employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) with two cycles, each consisting of planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. The subjects were 20 seventh-grade students. Data were collected through observation, writing tests, and filed note, and were analyzed both qualitatively and quantitatively. The findings revealed that students’ writing skills improved from the first to the second cycle in terms of text structure, vocabulary, and grammar. The average writing score enhanced and exceeded the Minimum Mastery Criterion (KKM). Therefore, the use of picture media proved effective in enhancing the descriptive text writing skills of seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Lolofitu Moi

Abstract

The purpose of research to determine and analyze the application of the flipped classroom model in English learning conducted in class VIII-F SMP Negeri 4 Gunungsitoli in 2022/2023. This researcher uses a qualitative descriptive research approach. The focus of research are first how the application of flipped classroom model in the learning English and second is what the results of students' learning English in the application of the flipped classroom model to learning English. Data sources in this study are observation, documentation, and interview.  Based on the findings of the study, it can be seen that the application of the flipped classroom model in learning English and the results of students’ learning English satisfactory, this is based on the results of observation and interview made by researcher on English teacher in class VIII-F who apply the flipped classroom model has been done well and supported from the results of interviews and from student test results that have been given by English teacher.

Abstract

By listening, people are able to receive message accurately in communication process. 20123 Curriculum at the Eleventh grade of SMAN 1 Tuhemberua expects the students to catch contextually meaning of procedural text. There were some research problems namely: the students are unable to understand the meaning of the sentence convey, the students are quickly forgetting meaning of the sentence what is heard, the students are unable to understand the generic structure of procedure text, the students are unable to use the connective sentence of procedure text. The purpose of this research is to improve listening skill in English lessons. In improving the students’ listening skill, the research used playing video and applied Classroom Action Research. The research has been conducted in two cycles, which each cycle consisted of two meetings, there were four steps in conducting the research, namely Planning, Action, Observation, and Reflection. In Cycle 1 there were 10 students (50%) got score among 40-59 got level of less, 8 students (40%) got score among 60-74 got level of enough, and 2 students got score 75-84got level of good, while in cycle II there were 10 students got score among 75-84 got level of good, 10 students (50 %) got score among 85-100 got level of very good. Based on the result of the research, it can be concluded that playing video improves the students’ listening skill. Finally, the researcher writes some suggestion; a) The teacher are encourage to apply playing video in procedure text, because it has a better effect on students’ ability and motivate students to learn more fun teaching-learning activities, b) The teacher needs to explain the purpose of the technique to get a good result, c) In teaching listening through playing video, the teacher should select the listening material for the students to make them interest and active in the teaching-learning process.

Abstract

The Objective off this study are to describe (1) the kinds of error made by the 6th semester students of English Department when translating Indonesia text into English, (2) the dominant error made by students, 3) how students made the error when translating Indonesia text into English text. This study used the descriptive qualitative research. The subject of this research is the 6th semester students and the object in this research is all the errors on translation made by students. The data collected to answer all the research problems are all the errors made by students. Based on data analysis, the writer finds that 1) students made error in Omission, Addition, Mis-formation, and Mis-ordering errors, 2) students made more dominant error in Mis-formation error, 3) students made error by: a) omitting an item that must appear in well-formed utterance, b) adding an item that must not appear in well-formed utterance, c) using the incorrect morpheme or group or structure, d) doing the incorrect placement of a morpheme or group of morpheme. The conclusion of this study is, the students are lack of vocabulary when doing translation. It is suggestion to the students to enrich their vocabulary and to the lecturer to enrich their students’ vocabularies by giving them daily new vocabularies.

Abstract

This study aims to develop visual prompts in the form of videos using the Research and Development (R&D) approach with the 4D development model (Define, Design, Develop, Disseminate). The use of visual prompts in videos aims to improve learning effectiveness and facilitate user understanding. At the Define stage, a needs analysis and problem identification were conducted to determine the objectives and content of the video. At the Design stage, video scenarios and designs are developed by considering visual elements and messages to be conveyed. The Develop stage involves creating video prototypes using supporting technology and software, namely the Canva application, as well as initial testing to obtain feedback. Finally, the Disseminate stage involved video distribution and end-user evaluation to measure the success of the development. The results showed that the visual prompt video was able to significantly increase students’ engagement and comprehension, thus having a positive impact to the increasing speaking performance in learning process

Abstract

Character education is an important part of shaping students' personalities, not only to achieve academic success but also to instill good moral values. The aim of this research is to analyze the implementation of character education, to identify the challenges faced by teachers in applying character education, and to explore the efforts made by teachers to implement character education in English language learning in the seventh grade class at SMP Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli for the academic year 2024/2025. In conducting this study, the researcher used a qualitative method. Data was collected through observation, questionnaires, interviews, and documentation, and then analyzed using data analysis techniques: data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. After the analysis, the findings show that the implementation of character education in English language learning in the seventh grade at SMP Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli has not been fully realized in the learning process. The results indicate that the English teacher has implemented 18 character values in English language learning, with 13 character values being successfully implemented optimally, and 7 character values not yet fully implemented. The challenges faced include space limitations, lack of resources and specialized training for teachers, other priorities that need attention, inadequate equipment, insufficient attention to classroom decoration, and constraints in time and opportunity. Efforts that can be made include providing a special box for lost items, offering training for teachers on how to handle students with special needs, organizing discussions or competitions to create slogans, maximizing available resources, and carefully planning activities to avoid interfering with students' academic schedules. ABSTRAKPendidikan karakter merupakan bagian penting dalam membentuk kepribadian siswa agar tidak hanya berprestasi secara akademis, tetapi juga memiliki nilai moral yang baik. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisis pelaksanaan pendidikan karakter, untuk mengetahui kendala yang dihadapi oleh guru dalam menerapkan pendidikan karakter dan untuk mengetahui upaya yang dilakukan guru dalam menerapkan pendidikan karakter dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris di kelas VII SMP Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli pada tahun 2024/2025. Dalam melakukan penelitian, peneliti menggunakan metode kualitatif. Data penelitian diperoleh melalui observasi, kuesioner, wawancara, dan dokumentasi, kemudian dianalisis datanya dengan menggunakan teknik analisis data yaitu: reduksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Setelah dilakukan analisis, hasil penelitian ini adalah: penerapan pendidikan karakter dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris di kelas VII SMP Negeri 1 Gunungsitoli belum sepenuhnya terlaksana dalam proses pembelajaran. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa guru Bahasa Inggris telah menerapkan 18 nilai karakter dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris, namun nilai karakter yang sudah berhasil diterapkan secara optimal yaitu 13 nilai karakter, dan 7 nilai karakter yang belum terlaksana secara optimal. Kendala yang dihadapi meliputi keterbatasan ruang, kurangnya sumber daya dan pelatihan khusus bagi guru, prioritas lain yang perlu diperhatikan, kurangnya peralatan yang memadai, kurangnya perhatian terhadap dekorasi kelas, serta keterbatasan waktu dan kesempatan. Upaya yang dapat dilakukan adalah menyediakan kotak khusus untuk barang hilang, memberikan pelatihan kepada guru mengenai siswa dengan kebutuhan khusus, mengadakan diskusi atau kompetisi untuk membuat slogan, memaksimalkan fasilitas yang ada, serta merencanakan kegiatan dengan hati-hati agar tidak mengganggu jadwal akademik siswa.

Abstract

Reading ability in English has been an essential skill for high school students, yet many students have experienced difficulties in comprehending English texts effectively. One factor suspected to be the cause of this problem was the students’ lack of ability to monitor their reading process. This research aimed to describe the monitoring in reading on students' English reading materials and to identify the dominant components in students' reading monitoring. The research was conducted at SMA Swasta Santu Xaverius Gunungsitoli used a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected through observations and interviews with 36 tenth-grade students. The results showed that students applied three main components in reading monitoring: Comprehension Monitoring, Metacognitive Monitoring, and Comprehension Evaluation. Monitoring Comprehension emerged as the most dominant strategy that students reported using. The most frequently used strategies were rereading difficult passages, underlining important passages, and taking notes. Metacognitive monitoring was reported by students, with a focus on identifying difficulties in texts and reflecting on reading content. Comprehension Evaluation was used by students, particularly in answering text-related questions and identifying main ideas. In conclusion, most students have demonstrated good awareness of their reading process and have actively used various strategies to improve their comprehension of English texts. However, there is still room for improvement, especially in the aspects of metacognitive monitoring and the use of more complex strategies.
