Abstract

The objective of this study is to develop a new environmentally-friendly brake pad made from eggshells (Es) and banana peels (BPs) as reinforcement agents. E and BP particles as dual reinforcement with various compositions were combined. The E/BP mixture was then embedded on a polymer matrix composing a resin/hardener mixture in a 1:1 ratio. As a standard, brake pads using a single reinforcement of E and BP particles were also fabricated. Physical properties (i.e. particle size, surface roughness, morphology, and density), as well as mechanical properties (i.e. hardness, wear rate, and friction coefficient properties) were investigated. It was observed that using dual reinforcements was preferable (compared to using single reinforcements) because they had a synergistic effect on the mechanical properties of the brake pad. The best mechanical properties were found in dual reinforcements of brake pad specimens using E/BP particles with a higher BP ratio in which the value of the stiffness test, puncture test, wear rate, and coefficient of friction were 4.5 MPa, 86.80, 0.093×10-4 g/s.mm2, and 1.67×10-4, respectively. A high BP particle ratio played a dominant role in dual reinforcements, increasing the resin's bonding ability and resulting in good adhesion between the reinforcement and matrix. When compared to commercial brake pads, the brake pad specimens fabricated in this study met the standards. The techno-economic analysis also confirmed the prospective production of brake pads from E and BP particles (compared to commercial brake pads). From this research, it is expected that environmentally friendly and low-cost brake pads can be used to replace the dangerous friction materials.

Abstract

This study aims to design a continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) type reactor to produce zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles. Mass balance calculations were carried out in this study as a benchmark to determine whether the reactor was working properly by knowing the flow of incoming raw materials and the products produced by the reactor. Furthermore, the reactor's design and the stirrer used in the reactor are calculated manually using Microsoft Excel. Based on the calculation results of the reactor design, the reactor volume is 8224.359 liters, with a vessel diameter of 73.298 in, a cylinder height of 166.090 in, and a cylinder thickness of 73.444 in. The top cover of the reactor measures 12.387 inches with a thickness of 0.072 inches, while the bottom cover measures 21.185 inches with a thickness of 0.083 inches, so the overall height of the reactor is 37.552 in. The reactor is equipped with one stirrer with an impeller diameter of 36.722 in, impeller height from the bottom of the tank is 24.433 in, impeller width is 7.344 in, and impeller length is 9.180 in. Turbulent stirring flow conditions with a standard motor power for the stirrer is 6.849 HP. This design will be a reference for building more economical, efficient, and highly demanding reactors.

Abstract

Challenged by global awareness of environmental problems and demands of the industrial revolution, the Ionic Liquids (ILs) approach as a cheap and environmentally friendly solvent has been explored in various chemical reactions in many industrial fields. This article aims to perform bibliometric analysis of ILs by combining mapping analysis using Publish or Pheris and VOSviewer software and to pinpoint trends in scientific research. For this purpose, an exploratory study with a quantitative approach was developed based on secondary data from journals in google scholar, between 2013 and 2023. The keywords used in the data search are Ionic Liquid, low cost, and green solvent. The bibliometric indicator refers to 1,000 different relevant articles from 52 publishers with the largest number of articles produced by Elsevier, totaling 423 articles. The results showed that the peak of production occurred in 2014 and then decreased every year. The main reason for this increase is the need for cheap and environmentally friendly solvents to replace expensive and environmentally damaging conventional solvents, while the decline is due to the shift of interest into the field of applied chemistry. From the results of the Bibliometric analysis, there are 9 clusters with 126 related terms including low-cost, green solvent, application, study, and extraction. The most popular terms in 2022-2023 are related to fuel terms. This study shows the importance of bibliometric analysis in providing analytical data about what phenomena occur. This research is expected to help and become a reference for researchers in conducting and determining research themes to be taken.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the decomposition of organic waste into carbon microparticles under atmospheric conditions. Carbon microparticles are made by drying and carbonizing raw water hyacinth. Then, the carbon microparticles that have been produced are ground using a saw-milling apparatus. Carbon microparticles prepared from raw water hyacinth were heated in an electric heating furnace at a specific temperature for the analysis. The experimental results show that the thermal decomposition process has three steps. Water hyacinth is stable at temperatures below 100°C. As carbon decomposes at higher temperatures, the process of decomposition into smaller molecules occurs. Then, at temperatures ranging from 150 to 280°C, an effective carbonization process occurs to form carbon. The advantages gained, in this case, will provide a better understanding of how to use heat treatment on water hyacinth.
