Abstract

This research was a descriptive research that aimed to analyze the cognitive level of reading questions in student’s book "Bahasa Inggris". Researcher analyzed the level of reading questions in the textbook based on the revised edition of Bloom’s Taxonomy. In the revision of Bloom’s Taxonomy there are 6 levels of question levels, namely: C1-Remembering, C2-Understanding, C3-Applying, C4- Analyzing, C5-Evaluating, and C6-Creating. The researcher used the textbook "Bahasa Inggris" as a source of data. The researcher used document checklist table in collected the data and analyzed the data to found the research findings. Researcher analyzed the questions only focused on reading questions in chapters of monologue text. After conducted the study, there were 7 chapters containing questions and there were 98 reading questions. The results showed that the level of questions contained in the textbook "Bahasa Inggris" only 5 levels. The results of the study, found the percentage of each level is 75.51% for remembering level, 9.18% for understanding level, 2.04% for applying level, 8.16% for analyzing, and 5.10% for evaluating. Of these, the most dominant level in the book is remembering with a percentage of 75.51%.

Abstract

Reading was an activitythat could not be separated  from teaching andlearning activities. It cause the textbook was one of source in learning. In this case, each reading texts had different difficulties, so it was important for teacehrs to chose appropriate text for students so they would comprehended the text. Based on the phenomenon, the researchers interested to conduct a study that aimed to classified the readability of reading text on English textbook entitled "Pathway to English" for class XI for interest group. The researchers found 22 reading text. This study used a descriptive research method with a quantitative approach. In calculating the readability level, the researchers used the Flesch Reading Ease formula (6 levels). The result of readability level analysis on reading texts showed there were 6 categorizes of readability levels, namely easy, fairly easy, standard, fairly difficult, difficult and very difficult. The classification of reading texts were easy 2 texts, fairly easy 2 texts, standard 7 texts, fairly difficult 6 texts, difficult 4 texts and very difficult 1 text.

Abstract

This study reports on the effectiveness of teaching writing through a genre-based approach. This study employed a qualitative research design, embracing the characteristics of a case study. The data were obtained from classroom observation. The study involved students at a public high school in Bandung. The result shows that the teaching program of Genre Based Approach which includes Building knowledge of the field (BKOF), Modeling of the text (MOT), Joint construction of the text (JCOT), and Independent construction of the text (ICOT) helped the students to express the idea in writing. It also helped students to understand the language features and structures of the text. Based on the analysis, it is recommended that the teaching program can be applied in various text genres to improve the teaching of English and enhance the students’ writing ability.

Abstract

This study was aimed at looking at the effect of using Shared Reading Strategy toward reading ability of students of SMP N 1 IV Jurai Pesisir Selatan, West Sumatra. This study is based on the fact the poor ability of students to understand the monologue text. This study used pretest-posttest design given to the experimental and control groups. The results showed that the experimental group posttest result was higher than the control group. It showed that the Shared Reading Strategy gave significant effect toward students’ reading ability at SMP N 1 IV Jurai. This statement is supported by the results of t test with significant value of 2.26.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out the effect of using Powtoon on students' reading comprehension. The subjects in this study were VIII grade students of SMPN 40 Padang, which consisted of two classes, namely VIII4, which amounted to 32 students as the experimental group, and VIII2, totaling 32 students as the control group. This is a quantitative study using the quasi-experiment method with a nonequivalent control group design. The experiment group received treatment using Powtoon, while the control group used PowerPoint. The test was utilized to gather data, and one paired sample test was used to analyze it. Meanwhile, the results of the hypothesis test state that H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted based on the sig value.(2-tailed) on the posttest value of the experimental group and the posttest control group with a value of 0.035, which means less than 0.05 The results showed that Powtoon learning media had a significant effect on students' reading comprehension in eight-grade Students at SMPN 40 Padang.
