Abstract

Abstract

The mushrooming phenomenon of fashion thrift in Indonesia has resulted in a new culture. The new culture is the consumption of young people on thrift fashion products. This research uses the qualitative descriptive method. The data was taken by filling out an open questionnaire to 10 respondents obtained through Instagram social media. The data obtained were then analyzed using the theory of the consumption society by Jean P. Baudrillard where the consumption of fashion thrift products not only pays attention to the value of the function of a garment but also the value of symbols in purchasing fashion thrift products. The results of this study show that the reasons respondents consume fashion thrift are because they accidentally found suitable products, complete collections, low product prices, products that are sold well and even some are products with well-known brands, and pride factors.

Abstract

This study examined how BookTok reinforces literary homogenisation through algorithm-driven virality, applying Adorno's concept of the culture industry. Analysis of survey data shows that 78% of users frequently encounter repetitive tropes, such as ‘Enemies to Lovers’ and ‘Fake Dating’, while 66% report that these patterns influence their reading choices. Additionally, over 70% of viral BookTok recommendations promote mass-market romance novels, mainly works by bestselling authors such as Colleen Hoover and Emily Henry. In contrast, books with experimental narratives or by underrepresented authors remain marginalised. BookTok's algorithm amplifies high-engagement content, creating a self-perpetuating cycle of popularity that aligns with Adorno's critique of cultural standardisation. This study highlights how BookTok prioritises commercial viability over literary diversity, narrowing reader exposure. However, this trend could be reversed by intentional interventions like influencer-led book marketing and algorithmic changes. This study highlights BookTok's significance in influencing reading habits and highlighting ways to promote literary diversity by connecting the platform's influence to more extensive discussions on digital literary consumption.

Abstract

This research aims to analyse the musical characteristics and lyrical themes of Bring Me The Horizon (BMTH) and Bad Omens to explore the cultural values shaped through the commodification of metalcore music, drawing on Adorno’s theory of the culture industry. This research uses mixed-methods approach by examining the duration of unclean and clean vocals, as well as the lyrical themes from both bands' debut and latest albums, to identify forms of standardization. In addition, the commodification analysis incorporates audience reactions, concert ticket sales, and streaming data. The findings reveal a transition from the creative freedom of the early years to more standardized works, marked by a reduction in unclean vocal techniques, less frequent use of blast beats, and a greater emphasis on smoother melodies. This study also identifies elements of pseudo-individualization, where both bands create a sense of uniqueness while adhering to market trends to appeal to a broader audience. These findings highlight how standardization and pseudo-individualization function not only as marketing tools but also as bridges to integrate metalcore music into the mainstream market and attract new listeners.

Abstract

In the global era, people are looking for alternatives in fashion through the thrifting trend. This research aims to analyze the consumption practices of thrifting in Surabaya from a consumer perspective through Marvin Harris’ Cultural Materialism approach based on economic infrastructure, social structure, and cultural superstructure. This research uses a quantitative approach with descriptive methods. The data collection technique was a questionnaire with 110 respondents in Surabaya, with ages between 15-40 years. Based on the frequency and preference of thrift shopping, thrift consumption is influenced by affordable prices, ease of access, and the role of digital technology. Economic infrastructure, including thrift stores to online platforms, makes it easy for consumers to obtain high quality stuff at low prices. Based on cultural values and meanings, thrifting is a symbol of sustainability, creativity, and identity expression. The shift in cultural superstructure reflects that second-hand clothing is accepted as a fashionable alternative that reflects social responsibility and uniqueness. Based on economic relations and local culture, thrifting is an activity that increases the potential of the informal economy by creating business opportunities and strengthening social networks. This research concludes that thrifting is not only an economic alternative but also part of a lifestyle that refers to the value of sustainability and has an impact on local culture.

The primary focus of this research is to identify the denotative, connotative meanings, and myths contained in the symbols within the song's lyrics. The research method used is qualitative with a semiotic analysis, where the research data consists of song lyrics taken from an online source. Data is collected by observing the Kupu-kupu lyrics, which are then analyzed in depth using Roland Barthes' semiotic theory. The data analysis technique involves three stages: first, the analysis of denotative meaning, which reveals the literal meaning of each symbol; second, the connotative analysis to explore deeper meanings related to the feelings of love depicted; third, the identification of myths formed through the symbols in the song. The results show that the lyrics of this song depict love as a feeling that affects both the physical and emotional aspects, with symbols such as blushing cheeks, a pumping heart, and butterflies representing the freedom of love. Love is portrayed as a force that strengthens relationships, offers sincerity, and maintains happiness. In conclusion, the lyrics of Kupu-kupu create a profound, dynamic, and freely evolving representation of love in line with the myths of love in popular culture. This finding contributes to the development of semiotic studies of Indonesian music by enriching the understanding of how symbols in song lyrics construct social and emotional meanings within the context of local culture. Keywords: Barthes' semiotics; love in music; lyric symbolism; pop culture; Indonesian songs
