Abstract

This research identifies lexical bundles which are connected to move analysis in research article of Science & Technology. The corpus-based analysis was used to acquire lexical bundles qualification of frequency and range. A number of bundles which were listed in the corpus were identified structurally and functionally using taxonomy approach by Biber et al., (2004). Further analysis was conducted to connect lexical bundles expression with rhetorical move. Connecting lexical bundles and move analysis in research articles aims to test whether lexical bundles can be used as move markers in academic discourse. The classification of move in a full-length research articles was adapted from Nwogu (1997). In the various structural and functional forms of bundles which are found in this study bring to the list of lexical bundles which indicate various move. The finding of this research is mainly supporting previous study where some bundles expressions have strong connection to rhetorical move in research article. Other finding shows that lexical bundles expressions could occur in more than one move. However, we found that not all of the bundles could express specific move (e.g. the value of the, the length of the, absorption process of the) and not all move is expressed by lexical bundles (move 8).

Discourse on English taglines beauty products play an important role in shaping brand identity and attracting customer attention. This study investigated several English taglines found on logos used by beauty products in Indonesia. This study aims to look at the form, meaning, and function of the language contained in these taglines. The method used in this research was descriptive qualitative. Data collection involved examining English taglines located next to the logo of each beauty product. The results showed that there are 13 English taglines on Indonesian beauty products, 9 taglines are in the form of noun phrases, and 4 taglines are in the form of verb phrases. The meaning of a beauty brand tagline generally illustrates that beauty can increase one's self-confidence and reminds one of the importance of maintaining healthy skin. The language function is analyzed by using Halliday's theory (2004). The language functions in the English tagline are representational and interpersonal. Abstract

In academic writing, first-person pronouns not only replace the author’s name but also stand out as significant elements of traditional conventions. Consequently, an ongoing debate exists among scholars regarding the permissibility of specific first-person pronouns in certain disciplines. Despite extensive research both supporting and opposing the permissibility of specific first-person pronouns, more empirical evidence is needed, particularly in the fields of chemistry and language studies. This study examines the usage of first-person plural pronouns in English (we, our, and us) and Indonesian (kami, kita) and their clusivity in 40 research articles published by The Modern Language Journal, Nature Chemistry Journal, Litera Journal, and Alchemy Journal in the range 2021 to 2023. This research aims to highlight differences in how authors from diverse disciplines—chemistry and language studies—situate themselves in academic writing. To achieve this, we constructed two specialized corpora: the English Corpus of Language Studies and Chemistry (Encolanche) and the Indonesian Corpus of Language Studies and Chemistry (Indolanche). We utilized Sketch Engine, an online tool facilitating word listing and concordance, for inspection during the research process. A qualitative analysis explored clusivity and the author’s identity expressed through each linguistic form. Classification of authorial identities followed a taxonomy proposed by Martín (2003). Our results reveal frequent use of the pronoun we in Encolanche, with exclusive clusivity primarily employed to express the author as the experiment conductor. In contrast, Indolanche exhibits infrequent use of personal pronouns.

Abstract

Background: The mass media play a crucial role in constructing social reality through language selection and issue framing. One significant issue concerns the representation of jihad and shahid, which are framed differently by CNN Indonesia and Republika.co.id. Aims: This study aims to examine how CNN Indonesia and Republika.co.id construct the meanings of jihad and shahid across various news topics and to investigate the discursive strategies they employ in linking these concepts within their news coverage. Methods: This study adopted a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative analyses. Fairclough's critical discourse analysis was applied to explore the discursive strategies used by the mass media to construct and reinforce ideology, stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination in the representation of jihad and shahid. The research employed the AntConc corpus tool for keyword analysis, collocation, and concordance. The dataset consisted of news articles containing the terms jihad and shahid, published over the past eight years on CNN Indonesia and Republika.co.id. Results: The findings reveal that CNN Indonesia and Republika.co.id play a significant role in shaping public discourse and perceptions of jihad and shahid in Indonesia. The media frequently associate these terms with Islam, radicalism, and terrorism, often leading to generalized and oversimplified interpretations. CNN Indonesia tends to reinforce negative stereotypes and prejudices against Islam, whereas Republika.co.id presents a more positive interpretation. Implications: This study underscores the critical role of media in shaping social and cultural understandings of religious concepts. The findings highlight the need for more nuanced and balanced media representations to prevent the perpetuation of stereotypes and to promote a more inclusive and informed public discourse on sensitive issues such as jihad and shahid.

Abstract

This study is to analyse the representation and characteristics of speech acts in Indonesian high school EFL textbooks, with two focuses: 1) the representation of speech acts; and 2) the characteristics of their presentation. Using qualitative method and critical discourse analysis, the data were taken from the textbooks of grade X by Widiati, U., Rohmah, Z., & Furidah (2017; 2018) and grade XI by Bashir (2017). The researcher acted as an instrument, using qualitative descriptive analysis. The results of this study are as follows. First, the presentation of speech acts already exists in the textbooks, but it is inadequate, because there are only four: assertive, directive, commissive, expressive, while there is no declarative type. In addition, the representation is also less varied. Second, the characteristics of speech acts presentation are adequate to facilitate understanding for students in developing their English competence. The speech acts are presented in the form of speaking skill materials and dialogue examples. This study underlines the need to improve the representation and presentation of functional speech acts in Indonesian high school EFL education.
