Abstract

The presentation of data is considered an essential part of academic writing, especially in research articles, and it could not stand alone without a short text to describe the visual data, namely figure legends. This research aims to identify the keywords and lexical bundles frequently used in figure legends. In addition, this research also examines the functions conveyed by these linguistic features. Based on the identification of the corpus, there are 334 keywords found with the 20 highest frequencies belonging to the terminologies frequently used in earth science (fault, seismic, quartz, and formation) and words related to the visual representation of the figure legends (line/lines, map, area, figure and legend). Furthermore, noun-related bundles are found to be the greatest number for lexical bundles, with 165, followed by verb-related bundles with 79, clause-related bundles with 54, and preposition-related bundles with 17. These lexical bundles perform research-oriented, text-oriented, and participant-oriented functions. These findings suggest that lexical bundles play a role in explaining the research condition, connecting visual data and research results discussed in research articles, and displaying information about visual data or specific parts of research articles to readers.

Abstract

Academic writing in the form of international journal articles is primarily read and used as references for many academic communities. Since the writers of an international journal are from different backgrounds and countries, their works have some differences in terms of writing styles. How the writers show authorial identity and authority through the texts is one of the aspects that causes the differences. This study investigates how Indonesian and non-Indonesian writers established their identities in academic writing. This study used the descriptive qualitative research method. Hyland’s (2005b) stances theory (hedges, boosters, attitude makers, and self-mentions) was applied as the research approach with the help of the AntConc corpus toolkit to analyze the data that were collected from an international journal. The results and discussion show similarities and differences regarding Hyland’s stances in journal articles written by Indonesian and non-Indonesian writers. The results and discussion reveal both similarities and differences in how Indonesian and non-Indonesian writers convey authorial identity and authority through their texts.

Abstract

This research aims to analyse the transitivity system of Pembangunan Berketahanan Iklim (PBI) documents, one of the key climate governance policy documents in Indonesia, based on an ecolinguistic approach. Using Halliday’s transitivity system (2014), researchers explore clues to the world experience of policymakers in positioning the relationship between humans and their environment through language features in texts. Also employing the same transitivity system, this research applies a mixed-method, integrating both qualitative and quantitative techniques to provide a comprehensive analysis. The authors utilized AntConc 4.2.2. to analyse the corpus of 46,789 tokens. Concordances containing keywords: lingkungan, alam, habitat, ekosistem, and hayati were analyzed using the transitivity system framework to identify the distribution of process types and participant roles within the corpus. Research findings show a significant prevalence of material processes, indicating a focus on actions and events. Furthermore, the analysis shows the patterns of the active roles of human participants, actor obscuring, as well as environmental keywords that fill the role of passive participants and circumstantial phrases that clarify the tradition of human domination over the environment. These transitivity patterns indicate stylistic features of an ambivalent discourse that perpetuates human domination over the environment. From the perspective of Living! ecosophy (Stibbe, 2021), language patterns that still represent anthropocentric perspectives are incompatible with sustainable ecological discourse. This research of transitivity analysis enriches the study of climate governance discourse in policy documents in the Indonesian context.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze seven semantic meanings in Syi'ir Tanpo Waton by KH Muhammad Nizam As-Shofa using Leech's theory of meaning. The method used is descriptive qualitative, with data in the form of words, phrases, and sentences in the text of the poem accessed through the NU Online page. The results of the study indicate that Syi'ir Tanpo Waton contains various types of semantic meanings, namely conceptual, connotative, social, affective, reflective, collocative, and thematic meanings. The most dominant conceptual and connotative meanings describe the vertical relationship between humans and God, as well as deep spiritual values. The social meaning emphasizes inclusiveness and Javanese culture, while the affective meaning reflects religious emotions in the form of praise, prayer, and hope. The reflective meaning shows layers of multiple meanings, while the collocative meaning builds associations of related words. Thematic meaning emphasizes the urgency of worship, knowledge, and praise to God as the main themes.

Abstract

This study scrutinizes the authorial presence in English and Indonesian research articles written by Indonesian authors. The study aims to identify the frequency of first-person pronouns used as a form of authorial presence across research articles. Furthermore, the study also intends to examine the discourse functions of these first-person pronouns in academic writing. A corpus of 168,122 words was analyzed by utilizing corpus linguistics methodology. The findings show that there is a difference in the use of first-person pronouns between the English and Indonesian sub-corpora with the most frequent usage of first-person pronouns found in English research articles. In addition, the study investigated the clusivity and the discourse functions of first-person pronouns within the research articles in both English and Indonesian. The results indicate that Indonesian authors tend to adopt the Western academic style in using first-person pronouns as authorial presence despite the conservative style used in their native language. This reflects the different norms of academic discourse across languages.

Abstract

Sundanese is one of Indonesia's regional languages with its own characteristics that distinguish it from other languages. One of these characteristics can be seen from the use of affirming particles. This study aims to describe the form, meaning, and tendency of Sundanese affirming particle usage patterns. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method and a corpus linguistic analysis approach. This research data is Sundanese LCC corpus data consisting of 3,257,544 tokens and 95,133 word types. The corpus data was obtained from the CQPweb page at Lancaster. The data analysis method in this research consists of five stages: determining the corpus, determining keywords, classifying data, presenting data, and concluding research results. There are three main findings in this study. First, ‘ogé’, ‘téh’, and ‘mah’ are the most frequently used affirming particles in sentences. Second, affirming particles are often used to emphasize subjects and adverbs. However, only ‘ogé’ and ‘baé’ can be used with all word classes. At least this study found 27 different patterns in the use of Sundanese-affirming particles. Third, each Sundanese-affirming particle has a different meaning. Data korpus diperoleh dari laman CQPweb at Lancaster.

Abstract

This research investigates translation strategies and equivalence in translating Indonesian cultural terms in UNESCO agreements into English. The study aims to explore how translation strategies are adapted to address challenges in formal document translation, specifically considering the cultural terms and norms present in UNESCO agreements. Using a qualitative descriptive method, purposive sampling was utilized to select formal documents from the Ministry of Education and Culture's website and UNESCO's official site, yielding English and Indonesian versions of agreements on intangible heritage preserved by UNESCO. With Newmark's theories on strategies and equivalence, the findings reveal the dominant translation strategies used. The couplets strategy is the most frequently used, with a usage rate of 27.27% out of 143 data points. The transference and loan word strategy is the second most common, with a usage rate of 17.48%. The equivalences used include Functional and Descriptive Equivalence (each 14.69%) and Cultural Equivalence (9.79%). These findings offer insights that enhance the quality of cultural translation across languages. The implications highlight the need for translators to have nuanced skills in navigating cultural disparities for accurate cross-cultural communication. Further research opportunities exist in analyzing broader document types and different language pairs to expand understanding of preserving cultural elements through translation strategies and equivalence.

Abstract

This article aims to describe Miss Universe 2018—2023’s winning answers textually and contextually with qualitative descriptive research to see the use of language functions in a Miss Universe Competition. The data for this research are words, phrases, clauses, and sentences from Miss Universe 2018—2023’s winning answers that are collected using listening and note-taking techniques. This research step includes determining the type of discourse, the unit of analysis, and describing data units. This research found that there are 126 grammatical and lexical elements. In the grammatical aspect, there are 54 references, 2 substitutions, 14 ellipsis, and 33 conjunctions. In the lexical aspect, there are 3 synonyms, 2 antonyms, 2 hyponyms, 6 repetitions, 8 collocations, and 2 equivalences. In the contextual aspect, the discourse is discussed in social cognition and social analysis using Teun Van Dijk's theory. As a result, the discourse was influenced by negative events occurring in society, so the content of the discourse focused on Miss Universe 2018—2023's efforts to influence the target audience to be brave in facing that inequality. This discourse also emerged due to two social factors, the power factor with the prestigious status of Miss Universe and the broad international access factor.
