Abstract

Ghasab, the act of using another person’s belongings without permission, remains common in Islamic boarding schools. The problem is far from trivial because it conflicts with religious norms while eroding the trustworthy character (amanah) of students. Responses have so far relied on advice, reprimands, and sanctions, yet they have done little to change behaviour because they rarely reach inner awareness. This article examines the philosophical values embedded in the Rokat Pandaba tradition and considers whether they can serve as a cultural approach to curbing ghasab. The study uses a Systematic Literature Review of sources from Google Scholar, Garuda, and DOAJ published between 2013 and 2026. The review identifies five core values within Rokat Pandaba: self-reflection (muhasabah), inner purification, asking forgiveness, moral responsibility, and the resolve to change. These values resonate with Kohlberg’s theory of moral development, Lickona’s character education, and the multicultural counselling framework of Sue and Sue. The findings indicate that integrating local wisdom such as Rokat Pandaba into character education in pesantren may offer a more grounded approach, both educationally and therapeutically, for addressing ghasab.

Abstract

Verbal bullying is a pervasive issue in educational settings, characterized by insults, harsh language, and derogatory comments that can have severe psychological and emotional impacts on students. This study aimed to develop a culturally relevant intervention model that integrates the values of the Petik Laut tradition with cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to reduce verbal bullying at MTS Al Haromain, Mojosari, Puger. The research utilized a Research and Development (R&D) approach with the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) model, which included the identification of bullying prevalence, module development, expert validation, and pilot testing with 53 students (Sa et al., 2020). The findings revealed that the Petik Laut tradition, emphasizing mutual respect, community solidarity, and environmental stewardship, significantly reduced verbal bullying and enhanced students' social resilience, fostering positive behavioral changes. This study contributes to the field of educational psychology by demonstrating the effectiveness of integrating local cultural values into structured educational interventions, offering a novel approach to bullying prevention that aligns with both cultural sustainability and contemporary educational goals. The results underscore the importance of culturally responsive education and highlight the potential for broader application in diverse educational contexts. Future research should explore the long-term impacts of this approach on student outcomes, including academic achievement, social well-being, and community engagement.

Abstract

Anxiety disorders represent one of the most prevalent mental health challenges globally, with athletes—especially those in high-pressure sports such as pencak silat—facing unique vulnerabilities due to the intense physical, psychological, and cultural demands of competition. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of mindfulness-based interventions in reducing anxiety disorder symptoms among adolescent pencak silat athletes at Cempaka Putih Ranting Jombang, Indonesia. Employing a quasi-experimental, one-group time series design, the research involved seven athletes who underwent a structured mindfulness program delivered over three weeks. Data were collected through validated self-report questionnaires (BAI and SCAT) and qualitative interviews, measured at four pre- and four post-intervention points. The results demonstrated a statistically significant reduction in anxiety symptoms across cognitive, emotional, somatic, and behavioral domains, with athletes reporting increased self-regulation, improved emotional stability, and enhanced overall well-being. The findings highlight the substantial benefits of integrating mindfulness practices into athlete training routines, especially in culturally rooted martial arts environments where traditional mental health resources may be limited or stigmatized. This research contributes to the literature by providing robust, contextually grounded evidence of mindfulness efficacy for adolescent martial artists—a group largely underrepresented in sports psychology research. For practical implementation, sports organizations and coaches are encouraged to incorporate mindfulness strategies within athlete development programs to support psychological resilience and performance. Future research should employ larger samples, randomized controlled designs, and extended follow-up periods to assess the long-term effects and broader applicability of mindfulness interventions in diverse athletic and cultural contexts.

Abstract

The decline of emotional intelligence among Generation Z, as evidenced by recent global and national reports, has underscored the urgent need for innovative interventions in educational settings, especially within Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) where students face intense academic, religious, and social demands. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of the doodling technique as a counseling intervention to enhance emotional intelligence among mahasantri at Pondok Pesantren Ibnu Katsir 2 Jember. Employing a quantitative quasi-experimental design (Time Series One Group), twelve students identified with low to medium emotional intelligence participated in a structured series of doodling sessions. Emotional intelligence was measured across five domains—self-awareness, self-management, motivation, empathy, and social skills—using a validated questionnaire before and after each intervention cycle. The findings revealed a significant and consistent increase in emotional intelligence scores, with all participants demonstrating measurable improvement as confirmed by the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test (p = 0.002). The study concludes that doodling is an effective, accessible, and creative intervention for fostering emotional growth, self-regulation, and resilience among pesantren students. The research not only fills a critical gap by applying the doodling technique in this unique context but also provides empirical support for integrating expressive art strategies into counseling and educational practice. It is recommended that future research involve larger samples, control groups, and longitudinal follow-up to further validate and expand upon these findings.

Abstract

This study addresses the persistent problem of adolescent self-doubt in school settings and the need for culturally responsive, evidence-informed interventions; in Indonesia, the values embedded in Jaipong dance offer a locally meaningful pathway to nurture confidence and courage. The objective was to design, validate, and pilot a counseling–learning module grounded in Jaipong philosophical values to reduce self-doubt among Grade-9 boarding students at SMP ADH DHUHA Jember. Using an R&D framework with the ADDIE model, we conducted needs analysis, blueprinting, iterative development, expert validation (content, language, design, practitioner usability; 5-point scale), and a small pre–post pilot with total sampling of the cohort. Data sources included observations, semi-structured interviews, student questionnaires (Likert 1–5), and expert rating sheets; analyses comprised percentage feasibility (Akbar–Sriwiyana thresholds), Aiken’s V/CVI for content validity, Cronbach’s alpha for reliability, paired t-tests/Wilcoxon (effect sizes), and thematic analysis with triangulation and member checking. Experts judged the module feasible to very feasible, reliability indices were acceptable, and validity indices met conventional cutoffs; the pilot suggested a downward trend in self-doubt and positive acceptability, while acknowledging small-sample limitations. We conclude that the module is context-appropriate, culturally resonant, and preliminarily effective, warranting a larger controlled evaluation. Practically, the study delivers a replicable procedure for schools to co-develop arts-informed counseling modules. Future work should expand sample size, include control groups, extend follow-up, and test mediators/moderators (e.g., confidence, courage, engagement).

Abstract

Identity confusion among university-age students is linked to anxiety, motivational decline, and reduced academic responsibility. In pesantren contexts, mahasantri must reconcile academic rigor with spiritual–communal norms, making culturally grounded interventions necessary. Objective: To develop and validate a counselor-ready module that uses the East Javanese folk performance Jaran Bodhag to strengthen identity clarification (discipline, resilience, simplicity, responsibility) among mahasantri at PPA Ibnu Katsir Putri, Jember. Methods: A Research & Development design following ADDIE guided needs analysis, co-design, expert content validation (CVI/Aiken’s V framework), prototype refinement, and a small-scale field tryout. Participants were 25 female mahasantri selected purposively. Data sources included expert ratings, fidelity checklists, learner acceptability questionnaires, and brief reflections. Results: Expert appraisal yielded an overall validity score of 80%, classifying the product as “valid/feasible with minor revision.” The tryout showed high acceptability and contextual fit; fidelity logs indicated deliverability within regular guidance sessions. Priority revisions were to (a) sharpen the service-plan sequencing and (b) add a concise glossary. Conclusion: A culturally grounded, arts-integrated module is feasible and acceptable for addressing identity-crisis indicators among mahasantri and is ready for broader piloting. Usefulness: The product offers a practical, counselor-facing package aligned with school guidance routines, enhancing cultural resonance and implementation fidelity. Suggestions: Future studies should employ multi-expert CVI/CR procedures, report item-level indices, use validated pre–post measures with comparator groups, document implementation fidelity systematically, and examine mediators (e.g., self-efficacy) across diverse pesantren settings.

Abstract

Risky sexual behavior among adolescents remains a persistent public-health and educational concern, often driven by uneven sexuality education, peer/media pressures, and limited self-regulation. Indonesia’s cultural heritage offers a context-sensitive prevention pathway. To design, validate, and field-test a counselor-ready school module that integrates Wayang Krucil values to prevent risky sexual behavior among SMK students in an Islamic school context. Using a Research & Development approach operationalized through ADDIE, the study was conducted at SMKIT Ibnu Katsir Jember (population = 37). A purposive limited try-out involved Grade 12 students (n = 11). Data sources included observations, stakeholder interviews, expert validator ratings (content, design, language, practitioner usability), feasibility/acceptability checklists, and brief student reflections. Quantitative summaries (Aiken’s V/CVI, descriptive statistics) informed revisions; qualitative data underwent reflexive thematic analysis. Expert review yielded an overall content-validity judgment of 80% (valid with minor revisions). Try-out evidence indicated high acceptability, perceived relevance, and clear deliverability under counselor facilitation. Key improvement cues were sharper, step-by-step session scripts and a concise glossary to reduce terminological load. The module is feasible, contextually resonant, and ready for broader piloting, while claims about effectiveness remain preliminary. Provides a culturally grounded, counselor-deployable package that aligns moral narratives with sexual-health learning goals, offering a replicable ADDIE pathway for schools. Future studies should employ larger, multi-site samples; multiple expert validators with item-level indices; standardized pre–post measures (knowledge, norms, self-efficacy, intentions/behavior); and longer follow-up or controlled designs.

Abstract

Mentally retarded students are students who experience difficulties in their cognitive and affective functions, affectively mentally retarded students experience difficulties in adaptive behavior, especially in the ability to interact between individuals. The formulation of the problem in this study is to improve socialization skills in students with mental retardation by applying the storytelling method using expression card media. The purpose of this study is to improve socialization skills in students with mental retardation by applying the storytelling method using expression card media. The research method uses single subject research (SSR), with 1 subject as a mentally retarded student at Harapan Pelangi Kalisat Special Needs School. This study applies an A-B design. A includes the basic phase while B is the intervention phase. The focus of the targeted behavior is social skills through the application of the storytelling method using expression cards as media. The data obtained were examined using analysis strategies within conditions and between conditions. The results of this examination indicate that the use of the storytelling approach with expression card tools results in a greater capacity for social engagement. In the baseline phase, student F obtained a value from the stability range of 5.4%, mean level 26%, upper limit 28.7% and lower limit 23.3%. In the intervention phase or after receiving treatment, student F showed a stability range value of 12%, with an average level of 72%, an upper limit of 78%, and a lower limit of 66%. The findings of this study are expected to provide benefits to teachers as a development of science in the field of special education and can be used as an alternative interesting learning method to help students with social skills problems.

Abstract

This study aims to examine and develop the tradition of Ngawuwuh as an effective method for enhancing empathy among the students (mahasantri) at Pondok Pesantren Ibnu Katsir. Ngawuwuh, which is a tradition of sharing and giving without expecting anything in return, holds noble values that are relevant to character building and empathy. However, this tradition has started to erode due to the influence of modern lifestyles, which tend to be individualistic, as well as the lack of meaningful social interactions among the younger generation, including the mahasantri. The decline in empathy among mahasantri is the main issue addressed in this research. In the pesantren environment, which should ideally be one that educates and fosters good character, challenges have emerged in maintaining and developing empathy amidst external influences such as technology and individualism. This highlights the need for a more focused character education method, such as through the development of the Ngawuwuh tradition. The general aim of this research is to develop the Ngawuwuh tradition as an educational strategy to enhance empathy among the mahasantri at Pondok Pesantren Ibnu Katsir. This study is expected to produce innovative and relevant character education methods, as well as restore the role of local traditions as an important tool in shaping personality and positive social values among the younger generation. Keywords: empathy, ngawuwuh, module.
