Abstract

Abstract

Background & Objective: Chronic renal failure is a slow and incurable disease. Regular treatment can halt the deterioration of kidney function, with kidney transplantation and hemodialysis being the most common options. However, hemodialysis patients are at risk of contracting the Hepatitis B virus due to the use of repeated vascular access and high frequency of hemodialysis. This study aims to describe the results of HBsAg examination in patients with chronic renal failure who undergo hemodialysis. Method: The research is a descriptive study that used a purposive sampling technique and was conducted in May-June 2022. The study included 44 chronic renal failure patients who underwent HBsAg examination using the Immunochromatography method. Result: The study's results showed that all 44 respondents (100%) who underwent hemodialysis had negative HBsAg examination results, indicating that they were not exposed to the Hepatitis B virus. Conclusion: In conclusion, the study indicates that chronic renal failure patients undergoing hemodialysis are not at risk of contracting the Hepatitis B virus. Further research could include quantitative Hepatitis B antibody examinations.

Abstract

The high cost of media for microbial culture encourages researchers to create alternative media using local raw materials at low prices. One of the most important media compositions for bacterial growth is protein. This content can be obtained from nuts, one of which is almonds (Prunus dulcis). The purpose of this study   is   to  find  natural   media  that    has   the   potential    for   the    growth of microorganisms at a low price. The  research method  used is an experimental method to determine the growth of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria on natural media of almonds. The results showed the growth of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria in this alternative media of almonds. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that  almond  nut  media  can  be  applied  as  an  alternative  medium in   laboratory research, especially in the field of_microbiology. It is suggested that further research should be carried out on natural media which are sources of carbohydrates and proteins as alternative growth media for bacteria.

Abstract

Gram staining is a staining method used to distinguish bacterial species into two major groups, namely Gram-positive and Gram-negative, Crystal violet is the primary (main) dye that will colour the target microorganisms. Staining in bacteria can be replaced using alternative substances with low cost, readily available and harmless, one of which uses substances that have anthocyanin content, namely purple sweet potato. The purpose of this study was to determine the results of using purple sweet potato as an alternative substance to replace crystal violet in staining Streptococcus sp and Escherichia coli bacteria. The method used is experimental. Based on the results of research that has been done on the use of purple sweet potato juice as an alternative substance to crystal violet in gram staining of Streptococcus sp and Escherichia coli bacteria, it shows that purple sweet potato material can be used at pH 6.5 and 5.7 while at pH 5.5 and 5 the bacteria are not perfectly coloured. So it can be concluded that purple sweet potato juice can be used as an alternative substance to Crystal violet in gram staining.

Abstract

Chondrosarcoma is a malignant tumor derived from bone cartilage. This tumor can be either primary or secondary. Secondary chondrosarcoma has some differences compared to the primary type i.e. the incidence is rarer, the younger age group, and many are low grade. The authors report a case of a 26-year-old man came to Hasan Sadikin Hospital with a chief complaint of a lump in the right thigh with mild pain since 5 months before consulation that is increasingly enlarging. After undergoing physical and radiological examinations, the patient was diagnosed with suspect chondrosarcoma in right thigh. Histopathologic examinations were performed 2 times, one of which used ultrasound guidance, giving a diagnosis of chondroma in right thigh. However the lesion was finally treated as chondrosarcoma. We suspected that the patient was more likely to suffer from secondary peripheral chondrosarcoma originating from malignant transformation of multiple osteochondromas. As widely known, it is almost impossible to differentiate between the low grade chondrosarcoma and chondroma with full certainty and this poses a classical problem in diagnostic medicine. Case described here was an example of the difficulty in distinguishing between these two diseases. Key words: secondary chondrosarcoma, peripheral chondrosarcoma, chondrosarcoma arising  in osteochondroma

Abstract

Background & Objectives: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a metabolic condition characterized by hyperglycemia due to irregular insulin production and action. Increased levels of glucose in the blood cause people with diabetes mellitus to experience glycosuria and neutrophil dysfunction, causing the risk of being susceptible to infectious diseases. One disease that can cause complications is urinary tract infection. This study aims to determine the presence or absence of Escherichia coli bacteria in the urinary tract of patients with diabetes mellitus suspected of complications of urinary tract infection. Methods: The method used in this study uses a descriptive method, namely the researcher only identifies Escherichia coli in patients with diabetes mellitus suspected of complications of urinary tract infection at the Imbanagara Health Center, Ciamis Regency Results: Based on the results of the research that has been done, it can be concluded that of the 12 samples examined, 5 samples were indicated positive for Escherichia coli bacteria, while 7 other samples found Enterobacter bacteria. Conclusion: Based on the results of the research that has been carried out, it can be concluded that of the 12 samples examined, 5 samples indicated positive for Escherichia coli bacteria, while 7 other samples found Enterobacter bacteria.

Abstract

Background & Objectives: Candida albicans is an opportunistic commensal fungus that becomes pathogenic when there is an immune disorder or physiological change. The resulting infection, called candidiasis, is acute or subacute and can affect various organs. Poor personal hygiene is a predisposing factor, especially in genital infections. This study aims to determine the presence and prevalence of Candida albicans in the urine of premenstrual girls aged 10-14 years at SMPN 1 Ciamis. Method: This study used a descriptive cross-sectional design. Sampling was performed using purposive sampling, with a total of 23 samples collected. The samples were examined at the Parasitology Laboratory of STIKes Muhammadiyah Ciamis. Results: The results of the study of 23 samples found 3 samples (13%) positive for Candida albicans, 2 samples (9%) positive for Candida tropicalis, and 18 samples (78%) showed no fungal growth. Conclusion Based on the results of this study, poor personal hygiene can influence Candida albicans fungal infection, especially in premenstrual adolescent girls aged 10-14 years.
