Abstract

Higher education in Indonesia, particularly in Batam, must adapt to global demands to enhance quality through the implementation of the international standard ISO 21001:2018. This research aims to explore the gap between national accreditation and the understanding and application of ISO 21001:2018 in higher education institutions. Using a literature review approach, the study identifies the need for a deeper understanding of the standard, as well as the challenges faced by institutions, such as resistance to change and resource limitations. The findings indicate that, despite significant potential for improving educational quality through ISO 21001:2018, many institutions have yet to prioritise its implementation. Therefore, socialisation, training, and government support are crucial to ensure the effective application of this standard to enhance the competitiveness of educational institutions at both regional and international levels

Abstract

The black rubber sea cucumber (Holothuria leucospilota) is prevalent along the coast of Dedap Island in Batam, unlike other sea cucumber species that face significant fishing pressure. This study examines the population and distribution of Holothuria leucospilota near Dedap Island in Abang Island, Batam. Surveys were conducted at three sites, where we carefully counted and mapped the sea cucumbers. A total of 236 individuals were recorded, with the highest density in Transect 1 (0.97/m²) and the lowest in Transect 2 (0.66/m²). Our results indicate notable variability in sea cucumber density across the surveyed areas, with some locations showing high abundance and others fewer individuals. The distribution pattern, assessed using the Morisita Index, suggested a clustering tendency, especially in Transect 1. We also examined substrate types to better understand these distribution trends. Additionally, water quality assessments showed that conditions across the transects were favourable for sea cucumber survival, with suitable levels of salinity, pH, and dissolved oxygen. These findings are vital for the management and conservation of sea cucumbers in the area.

Abstract

The community structure of Tridacnidae in the shallow coral waters of Dedap Island, Batam, has been analysed through a quantitative approach to reveal ecological dynamics and exploitation pressures from the surrounding communities. This study employed transect methods and ecological index analysis, including Shannon-Wiener diversity (H?), evenness (E), and Simpson's dominance (D) across five observation stations. The results indicate a high dominance of Tridacna crocea in locations with low exploitation pressure, whereas T. maxima and T. squamosa, which are still hunted by the local population, exhibit limited abundance. Pearson correlation revealed that dissolved oxygen (DO) has a strong positive relationship with H? and E, and a negative relationship with D, while temperature showed an inverse relationship. The integration of ecological analysis with socio-ecological factors revealed that anthropogenic exploitation pressures also shape community structure spatially. This study offers a holistic approach to the conservation management of Tridacnidae based on community participation and habitat zoning, while simultaneously addressing gaps in ecological and social research in the coral reef areas of western Indonesia.

Abstract

The exploitation of sea cucumbers in Indonesia has reportedly increased by 66% in the last two decades. This figure is considered the upper limit for sustainable exploitation. The waters of Batam, Riau Islands, are known as one of sea cucumber producers. However, no current status report exists on Batam Island's diversity and abundance of sea cucumbers.  This study aimed to determine the diversity of species and the abundance of sea cucumbers found in Abang, Ngenang, Temoyong Island, and Riau Island. Sampling was carried out quantitatively by applying the quadratic transect method at the three locations. About three transect lines were placed at each station, drawn perpendicular from the coastline towards the sea with a length of 50 m. The distance between each transect line was 50 m, and a 5x5 m plot was placed on each. The results showed that there were six types of sea cucumbers, namely Stichopus nactivagus, Stichopus hermanni, Stichopus monotuberculatus, Holothuria scabra, Holothuria impatiens, and Holothuria leucospila. The species diversity in three locations ranged from 0.214 to 0.314. The abundance of species on Abang, Ngenang, and Temoyong Islands was in the range of 0.073 to 0.1 individual/m2, respectively. The low diversity and abundance indicate high environmental pressure on Batam, Riau Islands sea cucumber populations.

Abstract

Background: Coral reef ecosystems in tropical waters are highly productive and biodiverse, with sea cucumbers (Holothuroidea) serving essential ecological functions as detritivores, contributing to nutrient cycling, sediment bioturbation, and substrate quality. Despite their ecological and economic significance, data on the community structure and density of sea cucumbers in Abang Island remain scarce. This study aimed to assess the species composition, density, and ecological patterns of Holothuroidea in the tropical waters of Abang Island, Batam. Methodology: Field surveys were conducted using a transect-quadrat method, with environmental parameters (temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen) measured in situ. Findings: Five species were recorded: Holothuria leucospilota, H. atra, H. scabra, H. fuscocinerea, and H. pardalis. Species composition was dominated by H. leucospilota at Station 1 and H. fuscocinerea at Station 2. The highest density was 0.130 ind/m² for H. leucospilota at Station 1, and 0.150 ind/m² for H. fuscocinerea at Station 2. Community analysis showed greater diversity at Station 1 (H′ = 1.07) but higher dominance at Station 2 (D = 0.691). Pearson correlation indicated that salinity and temperature were the most influential factors affecting abundance, varying by habitat type. These results suggest that habitat characteristics, particularly substrate and vegetation, shape species distribution in small island ecosystems. Contribution: This study provides the first baseline data on sea cucumbers in Abang Island, offering novel insights into the linkage between environmental parameters and species-specific distribution patterns, and supporting conservation and sustainable management of these ecologically and economically valuable resources

Abstract

Dedap Island is a group of small islands in the waters off the coast of Abang Island which is famous as a spot for anglers because of its clean location and abundance of marine life. This research is focused on identifying the diversity of Echinoderms in the waters surrounding Dedap Island, located in Abang Island sub-district, Batam City, Indonesia. Additionally, it examines the factors that influence the distribution and abundance of these species. The observation was conducted using line transect methods across various locations, leading to the identification of five species of Echinoderms: three from the class Holothuridae (sea cucumbers), one from the class Astroidea (starfish), and one from the class Echinoidea (sea urchins). The species Diadema setosum (sea urchin) emerged as the most dominant, with a total of 361 individuals recorded. The diversity index (H’) for Echinoderms in Dedap Island was classified as low (0.40), and the evenness index (E) also indicated low values (0.25), suggesting an uneven distribution of individuals and dominance by certain species. Contributing factors to this low diversity include ecological pressures, unstable productivity, and substrate conditions primarily composed of sand
