Abstract

This research aims at giving information and comprehension to undergraduate students of various study programs and universities in West Java about the rules of citation and reference manager by using Mendeley. This activity was held as an attempt to promote students’ paper quality which can be seen from its content and references. This activity was collaborated with Rafredu institution and was held online through Zoom Meeting. The method of this community service is Asset Based Community Development. The results show that the participants are able to understand the materials well and most of them are able to write down citation and references correctly by using Mendeley.

Abstract

Having a fluent Enlish skill is necessary for students because this skill can support their study and career in the future. One of ways to measure one’s English skill accurately is through TOEFL test. Listening is one of skills that will be assessed in the TOEFL test and many students consider that listening is hard. Therefore, this training is aimed at improving students’ knowledge of some strategies in answering TOEFL test, especially in listening skill. The method used in this community service is Asset Based Community Development. The data results show that most of participants could understand the strategies of answering TOEFL test, listening section and they could apply them in answering the questions very well.

Abstract

This study explores gender differences, reading habits, and preferences among undergraduate students studying English as a Foreign Language (EFL) at Ma'soem University, focusing on second, fourth, and eighth semesters. A qualitative descriptive approach was used to gather detailed data through comprehensive questionnaires and in-depth interviews. The sample included 32 participants, evenly distributed between male and female students. Key findings revealed a significant language preference gap, with 37.5% of female students preferring foreign language reading, compared to 18.8% of males who favored their native language. Regarding format, male students overwhelmingly preferred print books (93.8%), while females were more divided, with 75% favoring print and 25% choosing electronic formats. Both genders leaned towards fiction, though females showed a slightly stronger preference. Genre preferences also differed, with males favoring fantasy, mystery/thriller, and self-help, while females leaned towards fantasy, romance, and self-help. Access methods varied, with males more likely to use bookstores and lending networks, while females frequently used libraries and online platforms.

Abstract

Kemampuan berbahasa Inggris merupakan aspek krusial yang harus dimiliki mahasiswa, karena penguasaan bahasa ini dapat mendukung perkembangan karier mereka di masa depan. Salah satu cara yang dapat digunakan untuk mengukur kemampuan bahasa Inggris secara akurat adalah melaui tes TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). Namun, masih banyak mahasiswa yang memiliki pemahaman terbatas mengenai strategi sukses dalam mengerjakannya tes TOEFL. Oleh karena itu, kegiatan ini dirancang untuk meningkatkan pemahaman mahasiswa mengenai berbagai strategi dalam menyelesaikan soal-soal TOEFL, khususnya pada bagian reading comprehension. Metode yang digunakan dalam kegiatan pengabdian ini adalah metode pelatihan yang diberikan kepada mahasiswa semester tujuh Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris di UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. Sebelum pelaksanaan pelatihan mahasiswa diberikan pretest dan setelah pelatihan diberikan posttest. Hasil pretest menunjukkan bahwa pemahaman mahasiswa dalam mengerjakan reading comprehension masih rendah dengan rata-rata skor sebesar 60,69. Namun, setelah pemaparan materi, terjadi peningkatan signifikan pada hasil posttest, dengan rata-rata skor mencapai 78,45 dan nilai gain (n-gain) sebesar 0,46, yang termasuk dalam kategori sedang

Abstract

The Indonesian government has declared a vision for a Golden Indonesia by the year 2045. To create a bright future for Indonesia in the next 20 years, we must cultivate an outstanding young generation today by raising awareness of the importance of literacy and a reading culture among the youth. Literacy is not merely the technical ability to read and write, but goes beyond that—it includes the ability to understand, interpret, evaluate, and use information in order to participate actively in society. Once this awareness and mindset are formed, it is hoped that Indonesia's young generation will develop more productive habits by reading more books, thereby broadening their horizons, fostering a love for knowledge, cultivating curiosity, and developing critical thinking skills. This will help them become independent learners capable of responding to the increasingly complex challenges of the times. This community service activity employed a participatory action research method and was conducted with students of Madrasah Tsanawiyyah As-Syifa in West Bandung Regency. The activity took place on May 15, 2025. The students’ pre-test results showed an average score of 66.27. This finding indicates that the students had not yet fully understood the meaning of literacy or the importance of literacy and a reading culture. After being provided with education on the importance of literacy and reading habits, a post-test was administered. The results showed an increased average score of 83.09 and a calculated N-gain of 0.51, which falls into the medium category. These results indicate that students' understanding and awareness of the importance of literacy and a reading culture had improved.

Abstract

Speaking is an important skill that students must have when learning a language, particularly English. With increasingly advanced or modern developments, some applications can help in learning English, particularly speaking skills, such as the Duolingo application. This research explores students’ perceptions of grade 11 science students at SMAN 1 Rancaekek on the use of Duolingo application in learning speaking, its advantages and disadvantages. To collect the data, a questionnaire adapted from Utami, D. Y, (2020) and Inayah, N., et. al (2020) was given to twenty students and interview was addressed to nine students. The finding reveals that students have a positive perception to the use of the Duolingo application in speaking skills. Moreover, the findings show that there were five advantages, including increasing students’ motivation and encouraging students’ independence in learning speaking skill, assisting students in learning process, adding students’ understanding of English pronunciation, and improving students’ speaking skill. Meanwhile, research identifies three main drawbacks of using Duolingo for speaking skills: it requires an internet connection, includes distracting advertisements, and demands substantial storage space, all of which may hinder its effectiveness in speaking practice. Therefore, it is hoped that this research can provide benefits for students by using the Duolingo application to practice and improve their English learning process and speaking skills.

Abstract

in recent years, there has been a significant decline in the use of the Javanese language, particularly among younger generations living in urban areas. This phenomenon is influenced by various factors, such as the dominance of the Indonesian language in the education system and media, the impact of social environments, and the decreasing role of families in transmitting local languages. This study aims to examine the language shift from Javanese to Indonesian and its impact on the linguistic identity of young people. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, involving ten participants aged 20–25 years residing in Central Java and the Special Region of Yogyakarta. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and documentation, then analyzed thematically to identify patterns of language use and shifts in linguistic identity. The findings indicate that most participants prefer using Indonesian because it is perceived as more practical, modern, and suitable for cross-cultural communication. Javanese is still used, but it is limited to specific contexts, such as interactions with parents or traditional events. Nevertheless, participants continue to show emotional attachment to their Javanese identity. Their linguistic identity is flexible and constantly negotiated depending on the social context. This study concludes that language shift is a complex phenomenon that involves not only linguistic aspects but also reflects changing values, attitudes, and identities within society.

Abstract

Fluent English speaking is essential for English Education students, especially for academic and professional success in global contexts. However, learners often face limited real-life interaction, a lack of feedback, and weak autonomous learning habits. Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) tools like HelloTalk are increasingly used, yet their specific role in promoting autonomous speaking practice at the university level remains underexplored. This study investigates students’ attitudes toward using HelloTalk to develop autonomous speaking skills and identifies the benefits and challenges they experience. A qualitative descriptive method was used, collecting data through closed-ended questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with English Education students at Ma’soem University who used HelloTalk for at least one month. The findings reveal positive attitudes across cognitive, affective, and behavioral dimensions. Students found HelloTalk motivating, user-friendly, and effective for speaking practice. Key benefits included increased speaking confidence, flexibility, authentic language exposure, and timely feedback from peers and AI. Reported challenges included limited access to premium features, difficulty finding conversation partners, and fluctuating motivation. Overall, HelloTalk supports learner autonomy by providing a flexible, interactive space for language use beyond the classroom. These findings suggest that the integration of MALL tools like HelloTalk into formal curricula can enhance students’ speaking fluency and self-directed learning.

Abstract

Penulisan makalah akademis merupakan hal yang sangat penting dalam dunia akademik, dimana para peneliti, siswa, dan cendekiawan perlu mengelola, merujuk, dan mengutip berbagai sumber pendukung. Namun, secara umum penulisan makalah akademis sulit dilakukan karena sulitnya mencari referensi terkait topik penelitian, terbatasnya kemampuan TIK, dan mengolah teks sedemikian rupa agar tidak dianggap plagiarisme. Tujuan dari kegiatan ini adalah untuk membantu siswa SMA di Bandung dalam memanfaatkan manajemen referensi Mendeley untuk menulis makalah akademik yang mematuhi kaidah penulisan yang baik dan bebas plagiarisme. Metode yang digunakan dalam pelatihan ini adalah penelitian tindakan partisipatif (PAR), atau penelitian tindakan yang memerlukan partisipasi. Penelitian tindakan langsung yang dipilih oleh dosen pembimbing bertujuan untuk mengungkap permasalahan yang dihadapi siswa pada saat menulis makalah akademik. Temuan konsultasi menunjukkan bahwa hal ini mempunyai dampak menguntungkan dalam meningkatkan kemahiran siswa dalam membuat makalah akademis yang tepat dan akurat melalui kutipan.

Abstract

Menulis sebuah karya tulis ilmiah merupakan sebuah keterampilan akademis yang perlu dimiliki oleh siswa karena dengan membuat sebuah karya ilmiah siswa dapat memberikan manfaat yang nyata bagi perkembangan ilmu pengetahuan secara umum. Namun, masih banyak siswa menengah atas yang masih merasa kurang cakap dalam keterampilan menulis, khususnya menulis karya tulisa ilmiah. Oleh sebab itu, telah dilaksanakanlah sebuah pelatihan penulisan karya ilmiah di SMA Binar Ilmu Bandung. Secara keseluruhan respon peserta pelatihan karya tulis ilmiah ini merasakan sangat puas terhadap pelatihan yang diberikan terutama terkait dengan penguasaan materi oleh penyaji, pemberian kesempatan dalam bertanya, keramahan penyaji, relevansi materi pelatihan, sistematika penyampaian materi pelatihan. Untuk meningkatkan pemahaman materi pelatihan karya tulis ilmiah perlu dilakukan
