Abstract

Abstract The focus of the study goes to the protagonist’s heroism in making his country a peaceful state. There always seems to be a hero in everyone’s life; everyone has one, and many act as one. A. hero is simply a man admired for his achievements and noble qualities. Despite the accuracy of any dictionary, a hero can be defined according to the mind of the beholder. Heroes have been constructed in many fictional literary works and myths, as well as in reality.  This research is conducted by means of descriptive qualitative method proposed by Krathwohl (2010), and the theory of heroism applied is the one proposed by Kohen (2010). There are three forms of heroism showed by Kadji, the protagonist of the novel: courage, sacrifice and suffering. Kadji is still young but urged by his courage, he is ready to take an official assignment to finish the enemy of his state, named Shamad. The study is conducted by applying descriptive qualitative method with purposes of describing, explaining and validating things related to the data taken from the novel. From the research result it is seen that Kadji in quest of the enemy experiences sacrifice and suffering but motored by his courage all is settled down  to the upmost outcome. Kadji is a real patriot for his state and his clans as he has shown a spirit of heroism in all his steps. Kadji has proved himself to be a hero. It is in line with what Kohen (2010) claims that  heroes are people who transform compassion or a personal virtue into heroic action or a civic virtue. He has proved so much to his forefathers of his fatherland that they do not tolerate traitors.  Keywords: heroism, courage, sacrifice, suffering

Abstract

This study applies Searle's speech act theory, as outlined in Levinson (1983), to analyze directive speech acts in the high-profile murder case of Judge Jamaluddin. The research specifically examines how commands and orders issued by the main perpetrator, Zuraida Hanum, influenced her accomplices, M. Jefri Pratama and M. Reza Pahlevi, to commit premeditated murder. Using a qualitative descriptive method, data were sourced from the Medan District Court decision, which includes the defendants’ recorded utterances. The study categorizes directive speech acts based on the speaker's knowledge, intentions, and power dynamics, focusing on how Zuraida's directives were central to executing the crime. Findings reveal that command speech acts were not only pivotal in compelling the accomplices to act but also demonstrated the manipulation and influence wielded by the speaker. This research highlights the importance of speech act analysis in uncovering the linguistic mechanisms behind criminal behavior and underscores its potential applications in forensic linguistics and legal investigations.

Abstract

This study applies Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, utilizing Teun A. van Dijk’s methodological framework. Since its release in 1975, the song has captivated audiences with its intricate composition and enigmatic lyrics, sparking diverse interpretations. This research explores how language and discourse within the lyrics reflect, construct, and challenge dominant ideologies and power structures. Through van Dijk’s model, the study examines the macrostructure, microstructure, and superstructure of the song in relation to social cognition and contextual influences. By analyzing linguistic choices, narrative elements, and intertextual meanings, the research reveals how the song navigates themes of identity, defiance, and existential turmoil. The findings indicate that Bohemian Rhapsody extends beyond its musical significance, functioning as a vehicle for cultural critique and social reflection. This study underscores the interdisciplinary relevance of CDA in music analysis, highlighting how discourse in popular songs both shapes and mirrors sociocultural dynamics, reinforcing their role in critical discourse studies.

Abstract

This study investigates the role of verbal interaction in developing speaking competence classroom by analyzing verbal interactions between a lecturer and fourth-semester students at the University of Asahan. Using the Initiation–Response–Feedback (IRF) framework by Sinclair and Coulthard (1975), data were collected through classroom observation and analyzed qualitatively. The findings reveal a predominantly teacher-centered discourse, where lecturers control most exchanges, with limited space for student participation. Although some extended IRF sequences indicated potential for dialogic engagement, overall interaction lacked spontaneity and learner agency. The study recommends adopting more student-centered discourse strategies to foster meaningful participation and promote communicative competence in EFL classrooms

Abstract

This study analyzes the news narrative “Aceh Tak Masuk Daerah Rawan Pilkada Serentak, Lima Provinsi Memiliki Potensi Tinggi” using Van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) model to explore Aceh’s portrayal as a role model of democratic success. The research aims to uncover how this narrative influences perceptions of Aceh’s stability among local and national audiences, particularly in contrast to its historical association with conflict. This study adopts a qualitative approach, employing Van Dijk’s CDA framework, which consists of three dimensions: textual analysis, social cognition, and sociopolitical context. The data were collected through a textual analysis of media discourse and audience surveys involving 47 respondents (37 from Aceh and 10 from outside Aceh). The textual analysis focuses on the structural composition of the news, while the audience survey examines how different groups perceive the narrative. The results indicate that 72.73% of local respondents express pride in Aceh’s depiction as a safe and stable region, yet 43.24% remain neutral about its relevance to current realities. Among national respondents, 100% perceive the narrative positively, with 50% strongly agreeing that Aceh serves as a model for democratic management. These findings demonstrate that media discourse effectively challenges stereotypes and promotes a positive image of Aceh, particularly to national audiences. However, local acceptance requires narratives grounded in authentic experiences. This study contributes to discourse analysis by showing how positive discourse can transform public perception, highlighting its potential to promote post-conflict regions as examples of democratic success.

Abstract

This study explores the pragmatic meanings embedded in the traditional ceremonies of the Batu Bara Malay community as expressed through English descriptions. These rituals are rich in cultural values and communicative intentions. However, they have rarely been examined from a linguistic perspective that focuses on language use in context. The main objective of this research is to investigate how ritual expressions such as blessings, symbolic utterances, and culturally marked instructions are conveyed in translated or interpreted English texts. Using a qualitative descriptive method grounded in speech act theory and ethno-pragmatics, data were collected from four primary sources: interviews with cultural figures (35%), ritual observations with audio-video recordings (30%), bilingual document analysis (25%), and field notes on the ceremonial context (10%). The results indicate that 67% of English translations partially retained the original communicative force, 23% showed significant meaning shifts, particularly in indirect speech acts and politeness strategies, and only 10% fully preserved the original sociocultural intentions. These findings reveal the complexity of maintaining cultural meanings in cross-linguistic communication and the potential for meaning loss during translation. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of cultural pragmatics in multilingual translation and highlights the importance of culturally sensitive translation practices. It concludes that such practices are crucial to preserving the sociocultural integrity of local traditions and promoting more effective intercultural understanding.

Abstract

This research examines the theme of suffering in Emily Dickinson’s selected poems, focusing on her unique poetic approach and the profound emotional resonance her work evokes. Emily Dickinson, a pivotal figure in 19th-century American literature, frequently explored themes of death, pain, and existential questions. Despite her reclusive life, her poetry is rich with personal imagery and symbols, reflecting her deep preoccupation with mortality and the human condition. The study utilizes a structural analytical approach, combining library research with descriptive qualitative analysis. This method involves a thorough examination of relevant literary critiques and an in-depth textual analysis of Dickinson’s poems. The aim is to uncover how Dickinson’s portrayal of suffering contributes to a deeper understanding of human experience. Findings indicate that Dickinson’s treatment of suffering is multifaceted, often depicting pain as a necessary aspect of the human soul's development and a precursor to joy and peace. Her poems suggest that pain and suffering are integral to personal growth and resilience. Dickinson’s ability to articulate the complexities of suffering through her innovative use of language and metaphor makes her work both timeless and universally relatable. Overall, Emily Dickinson’s exploration of suffering provides a profound insight into the human experience, highlighting the interconnectedness of pain, joy, and personal growth. Her poetry remains a significant contribution to American literature, offering a nuanced perspective on the inevitability of suffering and its role in shaping the human soul.

Abstract

Gothic stories have a distinctive feature of presenting suspense and horror elements that make the reader both scared and curious as they read the gothic novel. The Gothic novel does not shy away from the dark side, a battle between good and evil, but the victory is not always clear-cut. This study examines gothic elements in Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein. The purpose of this study is to analyse the gothic elements in Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein. This study applies the theory of gothic novel elements from Robert Harris in identifying the gothic elements in Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein. Descriptive qualitative research is applied in this study. The data are the utterances and quotations that are related to the gothic elements in the novel. The results of this study indicate that there are seven gothic elements found in the novel: setting in a castle or old mansion, an atmosphere of mystery and suspense, omens, portents, visions, supernatural or otherwise inexplicable events, high, even overwrought emotion, women in distress, and the metonymy of gloom and horror.

Abstract

This study investigates the politeness strategies employed in interactions on Ganjar Pranowo's Instagram account, with particular attention to how linguistic choices shape digital political communication. It explores the strategies used by both followers and the politician to navigate social dynamics, express solidarity, and manage face-threatening acts within a public online setting. Utilizing a qualitative content analysis approach, the study examines 250 comments and responses, categorized according to Brown and Levinson’s four politeness strategies: bald-on-record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off-record. The findings reveal that positive politeness is the most commonly employed strategy among followers, reflecting a supportive and affiliative communicative style. Bald-on-record strategies are also frequently observed, indicating direct and unmitigated expressions. In contrast, Ganjar Pranowo primarily adopts bald-on-record strategies, suggesting a preference for clarity and communicative efficiency. Negative politeness and off-record strategies appear less frequently, underscoring the overall informal and inclusive nature of the digital interactions.

Abstract

This paper presents a systematic literature review exploring the experiential meaning of song lyrics, focusing on studies published between 2020 and 2024. Drawing from 21 peer-reviewed articles, the review synthesizes how song lyrics encode and convey lived experience through linguistic and cultural mechanisms. The analysis reveals that Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), particularly transitivity analysis, is the predominant framework used to examine how mental, relational, and material processes construct experiential meaning in lyrics. Additionally, figurative language such as metaphor and personification plays a vital role in symbolizing complex emotions and psychological states. Beyond individual expression, song lyrics are also shown to reflect broader sociocultural narratives related to identity, gender, and power dynamics. These findings underscore the multifaceted nature of experiential meaning, highlighting the interplay between grammatical structures, stylistic devices, and cultural contexts. The review also identifies gaps in the literature, notably the need for more cross-cultural studies and listener reception research. Finally, the paper discusses the pedagogical potential of song lyrics for language learning and suggests future directions integrating multimodal and interdisciplinary approaches. This review contributes to a deeper understanding of how songs serve as powerful vehicles for sharing and interpreting human experience.
