Abstract

Streptococcus pyogenes is a bacterium that causes throat and skin infections.  Diseases caused by Streptococcus pyogenes bacteria can typically be treated with antibiotics. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of the ethanol extract of gaharu leaves (Aquilaria malaccensis Lamk) against the development of Streptococcus pyogenes bacteria using the disc diffusion method. The positive control used the antibiotic clindamycin, and the negative control used 1% DMSO. Observations were made by measuring the inhibition zone formed around the paper disc. The average diameter of the inhibition zone formed included a 10% concentration of 9.8 mm, a 15% concentration of 10.08 mm, a 20% concentration of 11.54 mm, and for the positive control, antibiotic clindamycin, it was 29.92 mm in the very strong category. In contrast, the negative control, 1% DMSO, did not form an inhibition zone. The One Way Anova data analysis test using the SPSS IBM version 26 program obtained results (p>0.05), meaning that there were significant antibacterial and differences in the diameter of the inhibition zone of the ethanol extract of gaharu leaves in each treatment.

Abstract

Ecopreneurship, or environment-based entrepreneurship, offers a strategic approach to thematic training aimed at fostering environmental awareness and entrepreneurial skills. This study presents a training program conducted at SMA Negeri 9 Samarinda, which introduced high school students to ecopreneurship through the development of an organik body scrub made from black glutinous rice. The program consisted of two core components: (1) theoretical instruction on organik products and ecopreneurship concepts, and (2) hands-on practice in creating the body scrub. Effectiveness was assessed through pre- and post-training evaluations, which revealed a significant increase in student knowledge—from an average pre-test score of 64.11 to a post-test average of 78.75. Students exhibited strong engagement and active participation throughout the sessions. They also developed and presented simple promotional posters for their products, promoting soft skills such as public speaking and creative visual design. This initiative demonstrates the potential of ecopreneurship education to inspire interest in environmental sustainability and creative entrepreneurship among youth

Abstract

Tahongai (Kleinhovia hospita L.) is recognized as a traditional medicinal plant originating from East Kalimantan. This species possesses various bioactive properties that contribute to health benefits, particularly from its leaves, which contain active compounds such as flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, and terpenoids. These bioactive constituents have been reported to exhibit anti-hyperuricemic properties. This study aimed to evaluate the anti-hyperuricemic activity of K. hospita leaf infusion in hyperuricemic mice (Mus musculus L.), which were induced using chicken liver juice. The test material used was an infusion prepared from K. hospita leaves. The experimental design consisted of five treatment groups: a positive control group receiving allopurinol, a negative control group receiving distilled water, and three treatment groups administered K. hospita leaf infusion at varying concentrations of P1=15%, P2=30%, and P3=60%. The results indicated that the highest mean reduction in uric acid levels was observed in the P2 group, which received a 30% concentration of K. hospita leaf infusion, with an average percentage decrease of 19.12%. However, statistical analysis using One-Way ANOVA revealed a p-value greater than 0.05, indicating that there was no significant difference in uric acid reduction among the treatment groups.

Abstract

Abstract

Miana leaves (Coleus scutellarioides) have compounds that have the potential to be antibacterial. The bacteria Streptococcus pyogenes and Streptococcus mutans are a group of positive bacteria containing a lipid layer that is low in peptidoglycan and teichoic acid. This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of Miana leaves against Streptococcus pyogenes and Streptococcus mutans because both types of infectious bacteria. This research used the disc diffusion method. The preparation involved the maceration method using 96% ethanol as a solvent for five days, followed by concentration using a water bath at 70°C to obtain a thick extract. Observations were made on the diameter of the inhibition zone visible in the clear zone around the disc. The average inhibition diameter by ethanol extract against S. pyogenes is 9.83 mm, 10.76 mm, 12.42 mm, 15.66 mm, and 28.56 mm, respectively at extract concentrations of 5, 10, 20, 40, and amoxicillin (positive control). The negative control 1% DMSO did not form an inhibition zone. The statistical analysis using One-Way ANOVA (SPSS 27) yielded a p-value of < 0.05, confirming a significant difference in antibacterial activity across all tested groups. This result demonstrates that Miana leaf ethanol extract at concentrations of 5%, 10%, 20%, and 40% effectively inhibits the growth of both S. pyogenes and S. mutans. Furthermore, the inhibition zones varied significantly between the extract concentrations and the control groups, proving that the extract’s efficacy is concentration dependent. These findings suggest that Miana leaf ethanol extract has potential as a natural antibacterial agent for developing alternative phytotherapeutic treatments against S. pyogenes and S. mutans infections.
