Abstract

Oil pollution in the waters is one of the factors that affect the abundance of fhytoplankton, especially the diatom. The waters of Lalang Strait, Mengkapan Village, are used as international shipping lanes and industrial areas. This study aims to analyze the total oil content, calculate the abundance of planktonic diatoms, and explain the relationship between the total oil content and the abundance of planktonic diatoms carried out in the Lalang Strait waters, Mengkapan Village, Siak Regency, Riau Province. This research uses survey method. Station 1 is near Tanjung Buton Port, station 2 is in the mangrove ecotourism area, and station 3 is in the fishing port and near the settlement. The result of oil content analysis obtained an average value of 0,00016 ppm. The highest oil content at station 3 is 0,00035 ppm and the lowest at station 2 is 0,00011 ppm. The results of the calculation of the abundance of planktonic diatoms ranged from 5.014 to 22.062 cells/L. The highest abundance at station 1 was 17.716 cells/L. The lowest abundance was at station 2 which was 9.694 cells/L. Simple linear regression test result, obtained equation Y= 14,2644+(-3802,27x). The coefficient of determination (R2)= 0,002 states 0,2 % of the abundance of planktonic diatoms is influenced by oil content and the rest is influenced by other environmental factors. Correlation coefficient (r) = 0,053, so the relationship of total oil content with the abundance of planktonic diatoms is very weak.

Abstract

The existence of phytoplankton in the aquatic environment greatly affects aquatic life itsself. Through photosynthesis, phytoplankton is responsible for producing oxygen and nutrients, especially for other marine organisms. Furthermore, phytoplankton can be indicators of fertility and the quality of an aquatic ecosystem. The waters of Carocok Tarusan beach have congested anthropogenic activities, like shipyard and shipping, tourism, and domestic activities. This of course greatly affects the existence of phytoplankton which is very dependent on environmental conditions. This study aims to determine the structure of the phytoplankton community and its relation to the characteristics along with the quality of the waters in Carocok Tarusan beach. Phytoplankton samples were collected by using plankton net number 25 at three stations that have been determined by the purposive sampling method. The results showed that the temperature values ranged from 29.3-29.7ºC, salinity 27.7-31.3‰, brightness 1.8-3 m, pH 7, 0.3-0.6 m/s. There are 12 species from 3 classes found. The most common species found were Navicula sp, Synedra ulna sp., and Isthmia sp. The average abundance of phytoplankton at each station is 57.86-92.58 Ind/L. The results of the ANOVA test on the abundance of phytoplankton showed a significant value of 0.108, which means the P value> 0.05, this indicates that there is no significant difference in the abundance of phytoplankton between stations. The value of the species diversity index (H') of phytoplankton has an average value of 1.7436 - 2.0028. The Uniformity Index (E) has an average value ranging from 0.1393 to 0.1464. Meanwhile, the phytoplankton dominance index shows an average value of 0.2661 – 0.3191.

Abstract

This study was conducted in June 2021. Data collection of phytoplankton abundance and primary productivity was carried out in the waters of Kasiak Island of West Sumatra Province. The aim of the study was to analyze phytoplankton abundance, primary productivity vertically, and the effect of phytoplankton abundance on primary productivity in the waters of Kasiak Island. Based on the results of this study obtained that the abundance of phytoplankton on the surface (0 m) ranges from 41.67-187.50 ind/L. The abundance of phytoplankton in the depth of 5 ranges from 20.83-104.17 ind/L. While the primary productivity level of the results of the measurement of dissolved oxygen of the surface (0 meters) is obtained ranging from 7.6-11.2 mg/L while at a depth (5 m) range from 8-10.4 mg/L. Based on simple linear regression analysis on the surface (0) obtained the equation Y = 42.26x + 0.48x. The value of r2 = 0.2031 while the correlation coefficient value (r) is 0.4507. Based on the results of a simple linear regression analysis it is stated that the increasing abundance of phytoplankton the primary productivity level of the waters increases. As for the depth of 5 meters the equation Y = 46.45x + 0.07x. The value of r2 = 0.0183 while the correlation coefficient value (r) is 0.1335. Based on linear regression obtained a negative correlation means that reducing the abundance of phytoplankton will reduce the productivity of the waters.
