Abstract

Komodo National Park (KNP), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, faces significant environmental challenges due to increasing tourism, climate change, and resource management issues. This preliminary study employs the Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) to estimate visitors' willingness to pay (WTP) for adaptive management initiatives aimed at preserving the park's unique biodiversity and ecological health. Conducted in Labuan Bajo, the main gateway to KNP, the study involved 50 respondents who were surveyed on their WTP for improved environmental quality and management. The binary logistic regression analysis revealed that higher income levels and gender significantly influence WTP, with higher income individuals and males being more likely to contribute financially. Marital status showed a negative association with WTP, suggesting that married individuals may have financial constraints. The study highlights the importance of understanding sociodemographic factors to design effective funding strategies for conservation. The findings underscore the need for targeted communication and engagement strategies to increase financial support for adaptive management. These insights will inform policy and management strategies to ensure the long-term sustainability of KNP.

Abstract

This study explores the potential for managing biodegradable marine debris waste in Jakarta City through composting, aiming to reduce and treat this waste effectively. In Jakarta, river debris predominantly consists of materials that degrade easily and are biodegradable. Composting represents the most straightforward method for processing this type of organic waste. The study's objective was to evaluate the feasibility of composting organic biodegradable river debris as a waste management strategy. Data collection was conducted at Emplacement Pluit, utilizing random sampling with the four quadrants method. Out of the total river debris generated daily, which amounts to 309 m³, approximately 9.07 m³/day was found suitable for composting. The composting process resulted in a significant reduction of river debris volume by 50.15% within a 30-day detention period. This process was facilitated by mesophilic microbial activity at temperatures between 30-38°C. During the first two weeks, the composting environment remained acidic until the pH stabilized to a normal range between 6.8 and 7.49. A notable observation was the high initial water content of the river debris, recorded at 53.846%, which only reduced to 42.857% by the end of the 30-day decomposition period. Therefore, a pretreatment step is recommended to optimize the water content before composting. Despite these challenges, the compost produced met the required standards set by SNI 19-7030-2004. This study underscores the importance of managing biodegradable organic waste at its source to alleviate the burden on landfills, which are currently operating beyond their capacity.

Abstract

In the face of escalating environmental calamities such as rob flood disasters and the pervasive issue of marine debris, enhancing community adaptive capacities has never been more crucial. This research delves into the critical challenge of bolstering local adaptive mechanisms against these environmental disasters, focusing on elevating community preparedness through the strategic implementation of an Early Warning System (EWS). This study meticulously assesses communities ' technological, infrastructural, and social preparedness in confronting such disasters by utilizing a detailed examination of current conditions alongside a comprehensive SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis. The investigation reveals a compelling need for a seamlessly integrated EWS, underscored by considerable strengths such as the potential of emerging technologies and heightened awareness within the community. Despite these strengths, the study uncovers formidable challenges, including a marked dependence on technology that may not be universally accessible and the presence of resistance among certain segments of the population. Considering opportunities presented by supportive government policies and advancements in technology against a backdrop of threats like unpredictable climate changes and concerns over data security, the research proposes a model for EWS implementation that is both inclusive and collaborative. The study concludes that an EWS, when strategically deployed through a participatory approach that engages all stakeholders ranging from local communities to government bodies and technological partners can serve as an effective countermeasure to environmental disasters. Such an approach not only ensures the resilience of communities but also fosters a culture of preparedness and adaptive capacity that is essential for mitigating the impacts of these increasingly frequent and severe environmental challenges.

Abstract

Tofu is a widely consumed soy-based food in Indonesia, and its liquid waste is utilized for biogas in Sambak Village, addressing both renewable energy and waste management issues. However, the system's sustainability faces challenges. This research aimed to assess the current sustainability status of the tofu-wastewater-based biogas system and formulate strategic measures to optimize its long-term continuity. Sustainability was analyzed across five dimensions (ecological, economic, social, technological, and institutional) with multidimensional scaling (MDS) method, while strategies were formulated using SWOT analysis. The results showed an overall moderately sustainable system with an index score of 74.15. The ecological, economic, and social dimensions were rated very sustainable, while the technological dimension was quite sustainable, and the institutional dimension was less sustainable. The top priority strategy identified is the development and innovation of biogas installations. While biogas offers significant environmental and social economic benefits, sustainability is hindered by limited biogas volume and weak institutional management. Therefore, guidance, regular monitoring involving all stakeholders, and future supply-demand forecasting are crucial for its long-term viability.

Abstract

Climate change is a global issue as it drives global warming and heightens the impact of greenhouse gases. In the past decade, the Urban Heat Island (UHI) phenomenon has become a growing concern in major cities due to urbanization and development. This study aims to analyze the distribution and relationship between changes in Land Surface Temperature (LST), Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), and Normalized Difference Built-up Index (NDBI) with UHI changes in Surabaya, Yogyakarta, and Bandung, and propose mitigation strategies. The descriptive quantitative approach is used in the research to explain the calculated area and percentage of NDVI, NDBI, LST, and UHI. Geographic Information System (GIS) technology, specifically ArcGIS 10.8, was utilized to process Landsat imagery data from 1994 and 2024, enabling spatial analysis and visualization of urban heat distribution and land use changes. Simple correlation analysis was also carried out to examine the relationship between LST and NDVI, as well as LST and NDBI. The analysis shows that NDVI decreased, while NDBI, LST, and UHI increased over the 30 years in all three cities. LST and NDVI have a strong inverse relationship, where increasing LST correlates with decreasing NDVI. NDBI shows a positive relationship with LST, meaning more built-up areas lead to higher LST and UHI. Mitigation strategies include expanding green spaces, adopting green building technologies, and utilizing renewable energy.

Abstract. Setyawan AD, Supriatna J, Nisyawati, Nursamsi I, Sutarno, Sugiyarto, Sunarto, Pradan P, Budiharta S, Pitoyo A, Suhardono S, Setyono P, Indrawan M. 2020. Predicting potential impacts of climate change on the geographical distribution of mountainous selaginellas in Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 21: 4866-4877. Selaginella is a genus of non-flowering plant that requires water as a medium for fertilization, as such, it prefers mountainous areas with high level of humidity. Such unique ecosystem of Selaginella is available in some parts of Java Island, Indonesia, especially in highland areas with altitude of more than 1,000 meters above sea level. However, most mountainous areas in Java are likely to be affected by climate change due to global warming, threatening the habitat and sustainability of Selaginella. This study aimed to investigate the impacts of climate change on the geographical distribution of Selaginella opaca Warb. and Selaginella remotifolia Spring. In doing so, we predicted the suitable habitats of both species using Species Distribution Model (SDM) tool of MaxEnt under present climate conditions and future conditions under four climate change scenarios. Species occurrence data were obtained from fieldworks conducted in 2007-2014 across Java Island (283 points: 144 and 139 points for S. opaca and S. remotifolia, respectively) and combined with secondary data from Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) (52 points: 35 and 17 points for S. opaca and S. remotifolia, respectively), and this dataset was used to model present geographical distribution using environmental and bioclimatic variables. Then, future distribution was predicted under four climate change scenarios: i.e. RCP (Representative Carbon Pathways) 2.6, RCP 4.5, RCP 6.0, and RCP 8.5 in three different time periods (2030, 2050, and 2080). The results of the models showed that the extent of suitable habitats of S. opaca and S. remotifolia will be reduced between 1.8-11.4% due to changes in climatic condition, and in the areas with high level of habitat suitability, including Mount Sumbing, Mount Sindoro and Mount Dieng (Dieng Plateau), the reduction can reach up to 60%. This study adds another context of evidence to understand the potential impacts of climate change on biodiversity, especially on climate-sensitive species, such as Selaginella, in climate-risk regions like mountainous areas of Java Island.

Abstract. Setyawan AD, Supriatna J, Nisyawati, Nursamsi I, Sutarno, Sugiyarto, Sunarto, Pradan P, Budiharta S, Pitoyo A, Suhardono S, Setyono P, Indrawan M. 2021. Projecting expansion range of Selaginella zollingeriana in the Indonesian archipelago under future climate conditions. Biodiversitas 22: 2088-2103. The expansion of plant species to outside areas of its original localities has attracted great interest in theoretical ecology. The scientific curiosity of such phenomenon is even deeper when the geographical expansion is confined by natural boundaries and affected by environmental changes, including climates. This study aimed to predict the current suitable habitat niche of Selaginella zollingeriana Spring, a species with original distribution in Java Island, and to project its potential suitable niche in the Indonesian archipelago accounting for future climate conditions. In doing so, we applied the Ecological Niche Modelings (ENMs) using MaxEnt algorithm by employing 30 presence data of S. zollingeriana and twelve enviro-climatic variables. The model predicted around 17.22% (22,095 km2) of the Java Island area is potentially suitable for current habitat niche of S. zollingeriana, consisting of 10.93% (14,028 km2), 4.75% (6,097 km2), and 1.54% (1,970 km2) of low, medium, and high suitability areas, respectively. Under future scenarios, the model predicted the possibility of species expansion into the other four big islands (i.e., Sumatera, Borneo, Sulawesi, and Papua). Nonetheless, the model also predicted a declining trend of the availability of suitable niches wherein from 2030 to 2080 the modeled niche declined about 58% and 59% under the most optimistic and most pessimistic climate change projections, respectively. While this study provides a primary example in predicting species expansion in tropical archipelago, similar studies in a range of contexts (e.g., species, region) are recommended to add more evidence to strengthen the theoretical ground of expansion ecology under climate changes.
