Abstract

This study aims to investigate students' perceptions of the Suggestopedia method in improving speaking skills, particularly in delivering recount texts. Suggestopedia is a language teaching method that emphasizes psychological comfort, relaxation, and enjoyment in the learning process through the use of music, games, and imaginative activities. The research employed a descriptive quantitative approach with a survey design involving 36 tenth-grade students from a Islamic Senior High School (MAN) in Bandar Lampung who had experienced learning through the Suggestopedia method. Data were collected through a closed-ended questionnaire using a 5-point Likert scale and semi-structured interviews to triangulate the findings. Quantitative data were analyzed descriptively, while qualitative data were thematically interpreted. The findings revealed that students generally had positive perceptions of the method, with high average scores across all measured aspects: awareness (79.7%), past experience (82.3%), knowledge (82.4%), motivation (83.3%), and social interaction (82.1%). These results indicate that Suggestopedia was well-received, especially in boosting students’ enthusiasm and participation in speaking activities. Interview data supported these findings, highlighting increased comfort, self-confidence, and creativity in expressing personal experiences. The study concludes that Suggestopedia effectively fosters a relaxed and supportive learning environment, which reduces anxiety and encourages spontaneous speaking. However, its successful implementation requires teacher readiness and sensitivity to different learner preferences. Suggestopedia proves to be a promising alternative method for improving students’ speaking fluency and confidence in recount text delivery.

Abstract

Learning is essentially an effort to make students learn so as to gain knowledge and knowledge, mastery of skills, as well as attitude formation and attitude change. Mastery of English is a means to boost human resources. Global competition in all fields demands an increase in the quality of human resources (HR). This study aims to improve the decline in learning achievement in writing English-based procedure texts by using SAVI learning videos. This research method is a literature review with 10 articles published from 2017 to 2023. Overall, somatic auditory visual intellectual-based learning video is an effective approach in improving learning achievement in writing English procedure text. This approach provides opportunities for learners to be actively involved, uses various learning modalities, and stimulates emotional engagement, thus improving their understanding and writing skills.

Abstract

Cultural Barriers in Implementing the Original Method of Suggestopedia in the TEFL. Objectives: The study examines whether the previous studies conducted by Indonesian researchers applied the original Suggestopedia teaching procedure developed by Professor Lozanov or the modified ones through the implementation of two main characteristics of the original Suggestopedia in the teaching procedures which are fictitious identity and classical music. Methods: This study uses the qualitative library method which combines data taken from books, reputable indexed international journals, and articles, as the source of data reference. The collected data has been analyzed qualitatively through peer correction among the researchers regarding the topic of investigating the originality of the Suggestopedia method used by Indonesian researchers in previous studies. Findings: The results and findings show that previous research conducted by Indonesian researchers applied the modified Suggestopedia, not the original one due to the difficulties of adjusting the original Suggestopedia method to the time, curricula, and concepts of Indonesian pedagogy. Conclusion: The difficulties reflect the cultural barriers of views, beliefs, and attitudes in implementing original Suggestopedia as a set of TEFL methods in Indonesian pedagogy. Keywords: suggestopedia, indonesian pedagogy, second language acquisition, cultural barriers in TEFL.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v14.i3.2024104

Abstract

Factors Affecting the Work Readiness of Vocational School Students: A Systematic Literature Review. Objectives: This study aims to comprehensively identify and analyze the factors affecting the work readiness of vocational school students, employing a systematic literature review approach. It seeks to provide comprehensive insights into individual, educational, and contextual elements that shape students' preparedness for transitioning into the workforce. Methods: The research employs a systematic literature review methodology, analyzing relevant academic articles and reports published between 2015 and 2024. Sources were selected based on predefined criteria emphasizing their relevance to vocational education, work readiness, and factors shaping students' transition to employment. Key themes were identified and synthesized to construct a comprehensive understanding of the topic. Findings: The study identifies three principal dimensions influencing work readiness. First, individual factors, including motivation, interpersonal skills, self-efficacy, self-regulation, and soft skills, are crucial in equipping students to adapt successfully to professional environments. Second, the learning process, including experiential activities like internships and teaching factories, enhances students’ technical and non-technical skills by bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. Third, contextual factors—such as socioeconomic status, regional disparities, and social support systems—substantially impact students’ access to resources and opportunities, thereby shaping their career preparedness. Additionally, regional disparities in school-industry partnerships underscore the need for localized interventions to address these gaps. Conclusion: Work readiness among vocational school students is a multifaceted construct shaped by individual characteristics, practical learning experiences, and contextual influences. Developing targeted strategies, such as integrating industry-relevant practical learning models and fostering collaboration among stakeholders, can significantly enhance students’ preparedness for entering the workforce. Policymakers and educators are encouraged to address resource and opportunity disparities to ensure equitable outcomes for all students. Keywords: contextual factors, individual factors, systematic literature review, vocational school students, work readiness.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v14.i3.2024124

Abstract

This study aims to find out whether the PQRST (Preview, Question, Read, Summarize, and Test) technique can improve reading comprehension of the students in the second grade of junior high school at SMP YBL Natar. The data were collected using a reading comprehension test, which was used to measure students’ performance before and after the technique was applied. The results showed a clear improvement. The average score increased from 65.30 on the pre-test to 74.50 on the post-test, with a gain of 9.20 points. A paired samples t-test was used to analyze the data, and the result was statistically significant at the 0.05 level (p < 0.05). Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the PQRST technique is effective in improving students’ reading comprehension.

Abstract

The speaking learning model with communicative approach has been widely adopted in various countries as a method of learning English because speaking learning with communicative approach proved effective to facilitate students actively involved in the learning process of English, especially speaking. The effectiveness / success of speaking learning by communicative approach as a way of English education in helping students improve speaking skills is evidenced by the discovery of some research tried in various countries where English as a foreign language. However, in Indonesia this method is still not popular and very few teachers or practitioners apply this method. Therefore, this community service activity aims to help English teachers in South Lampung Regency improve insight and knowledge about the development / creation of a speaking learning model based on communicative approach through training and workshops by presenting material development of task-based speaking teaching materials theoretically; and conduct simulations of the development of task-based speaking teaching materials. The results of the training showed that the participants of this training gained real efficacy is an increase in professionalism in order to be able to correct the quality of the English education process, especially speaking so that the dialogue skills of students in schools face an increase. Prolonged similar training in the future still really needs to be tried.
