Abstract

Authentic material is the material that the contents and the language used is close to the students’ real life. Authentic materials have not been specifically produced for the purpose of language teaching and this easily differentiates it from textbook materials. In addition, the use of authentic materials is expected to bring students in direct contact with reality so that students are interested in the vocabulary learning process. This research aims to find out the use of the authentic materials; English newspapers in teaching vocabulary. The participants of this research are the eleventh grader of Muhammadiyah 2 Genteng Senior High School which consists of 31 students. The design of this research is classroom action research. There are two kinds of data collected by the researcher; primary and secondary data. The primary data were collected from the students’ observation, and vocabulary test, while the secondary data were collected from the result of interview, and documentation. In this research, the researcher found that in the first meeting, the students’ participation was 65% and in the second meeting was 84%. Moreover, the students’ vocabulary scores have improved from 61.29% to 87.097%. It can be concluded that the use of the authentic materials; English newspapers can improve the eleventh grade students’ vocabulary achievement. Keywords: Authentic Materials, Vocabulary, Newspapers

Abstract

This study evaluated the tenth grade students’ English textbook publishedby the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia 2016retrospectively. It had purposes to know whether or not the textbook has all thecriteria expected in the adapted version of ELT Textbook Evaluation Checklistproposed by Mukundan and Nimehcisalem (2015); as well as to know how thistextbook can be improved. Three tenth grade English teachers in three differentsenior high schools in Jember were selected as the evaluators to give their opinionabout the content of the textbook. The checklist result was counted to look for theaverage score from each criterion; and the result of the interview was analyzed usinga procedure of analyzing qualitative data adapted from Creswell (2012). The findingsrevealed that this textbook has all the criteria expected in the checklist with the totalaverage score of 2.95 (high usefulness); but there were some improvements neededdealing with suitability to learners, general content, grammar, pronunciation,exercises, reading, methodology, and listening. Therefore, 10 suggestions weregiven by the evaluators to overcome the problems in those criteria.

Abstract

Researching my set induction skill during teaching practicum program is essential because it is the crucial step that could determine the success of teaching and learning process. Interesting set-induction could help students focus on the topic to be learned, connect their prior knowledge with the new topic, and motivate them learn the materials. In this research, I did self-reflective study on how I developed my set-induction skill. I accomplished this research by videotaping my teaching performance, and continued by writing self-reflective journal based on the video. I analyzed the data using thematic analysis. The analysis revealed 5 themes, i.e., gaining students’ attention, building students’ motivation, assessing students’ prior knowledge. providing content overview, and determining students’ expectation. It is suggested that teachers videotape their teaching performance and do critical reflection based on the recorded video to plan better teaching performance.

Abstract

This research investigated the use of SQ3R strategy to improve reading comprehension achievement of vocational high school students’. The research design was classroom action research and the research area was SMK Al Ikhlash Rambipuji. The research data were obtained by interview, doing clasroom observation towards students; participation during the teaching and learning process and administering the reading test. The result showed after implementing SQ3R strategy in two meeting, the student’ participation during the teaching and learning process of reading was improved. The percentage of the students’ who were active in the meeting 2 was 70%. The result of reading test showed the improvement to 80% of the students who got score ≥70 or higher. In conclusion, it proved that the use of SQ3R strategy could improve reading comprehension achievement of vocational high school students’.

Abstract

English for Specific Purposes (ESP) ensures designing course to meet learners’ needs. Two points determining the needs are target needs and learning needs as proposed by Hutchinson and Waters (1987). The purpose of this study was to find out the students’ needs of Accounting and Financial Department on ESP Material at Vocational High School. Many studies have been done related to needs analysis at university level. Thefore, this study focused on conducting needs analysis for the students at Vocational High School. This design of this study is survey research. The data were collected through needs analysis questionnaires that given to the tenth grade of Accounting and Financial department which consisted of 20 questions and the semi-structured interview presented for the English teacher and the subject teacher. This research used both qualitative and quantitative information to analyze the data. The results of the students’ responses questionnaire showed that the skill that the students needs for their future career was speaking skill and they also stated that the English materials they learnt did not accordance with their needs. The students were aware of what their needs and wants, therefore, the requirement of ESP materials was improtant for both the English teacher and the students

Abstract

The objective of this research was to improve the junior high school students' reading comprehension by using Number Head Together technique at Patsan Witaya Mulinti School. The design of this research was Classroom Action Research. Patan Wittaya foundation school was chosen purposively as the research area because the students on this school still had difficulties in learning reading comprehension. Based on the observation, the findings showed that the students who could fulfil the indicators on the observation checklist of the active therefore participation increased from 25 (78.12 %) students in Meeting 1 to 26 (84.37%) students in Meeting 2 because some students were having difficulties in understanding the reading text. Meanwhile, the reading comprehension test results in Cycle 1 fulfilled the research’s target score. Based on the findings, it can be seen that students’ average score in the reading comprehension was 83.96. After conducting the actions, the results of this current study indicated that Numbered Heads Together technique is an effective technique to improve the students’ active participation and reading comprehension achievement. It could be concluded that the use of the number heads technique could improve the junior high school students' reading comprehension.

Abstract

This research was intended to analyze the politeness strategy employed by the characters in expressing apology based on Brown and Levinson’s politeness strategies in the movie The Princess Diaries (2001). Designed as a descriptive-qualitative research, the data was analyzed by using the descriptive method where politeness strategies proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987) was applied to see the types of politeness strategies. The data was taken from an American Comedy, Family and Romance movie entitled The Princess Diaries (2001). The result of the analysis showed that there were 15 utterances that can be classified as apologizing expression which were analyzed by using Brown and Levinson (1987) Politeness Strategies. Those 15 utterances were divided into 11 utterances using positive politeness and 4 utterances using negative politeness. Based on Brown and Levinson’s politeness strategies, positive politeness happened in a group of friend and a group of family that have close relationship with the Speaker while negative politeness used to avoid offence of the Hearer by showing respect. Thus, it is concluded that positive politeness was the most politeness strategies applied by all the characters in the movie to express apology, and all the characters who applied positive politeness strategy are female. Abstract

The purpose of this research was to solve the problems dealing with the students' active participation and writing achievement. The research design was Classroom Action Research. The area and subjects of this research were chosen purposively by using purposive method. The subjects were the VIII-D students at SMP Negeri 2 Tanggul in the 2013/2014 academic year. The data collected were writing test, observation, interview and documentation. The results of this research showed that there were improvement of students' participation and their writing achievement in Cycle 1 to Cycle 2. In Cycle 1, there were 54.05% of the students who actively participated during the teaching learning process. Meanwhile, there were 40% of the students who achieved the target score. Beside, in Cycle 2, there were 70.26% of the students who actively participated during the teaching learning process, while 70.27% of the students achieved the target score. It proved that the use of Spidergram technique could improve the students' active participation and writing achievement. Abstract

Abstrak. Reading is very important for the students in learning English, especially for the students. The students are able to comprehend what they read to get the ideas and make a conclusion about the information from the text as intended by the writer. The design of this research was descriptive qualitative research. This research began by conducting a preliminary study by interviewing the English teacher of the seventh grade students of SMPN 6 Jember. The data of this research were collected from the students' of reading comprehension ability test that was analyzed by using the formula. The result of the students' reading comprehension ability of descriptive texts covering word comprehension, sentence comprehension, paragraph comprehension and text comprehension were showed the highest percentage of four indicators was word comprehension with the percentage 83.08% which belonged to the “very good” category and the lowest percentage was the text comprehension with the percentage 57.89% that was classified as “poor” category. It showed that the teaching English in reading comprehension ability of descriptive texts needs to be developed especially in the lowest category that was belonged to text comprehension.
