Abstract

This study employed a pre-experimental research design to determine the effectiveness of using the Preview, Questions, Read, Summarize, and Test (PQRST) technique plus Character Journal Entries (CJE) in teaching reading comprehension of narrative texts. The participants of this research were SMA Negeri 9 Pontianak students in the tenth-grade students, consisting of 252 students in academic 2023/2024. The sample was chosen using cluster random sampling facilitated by the Spinning Wheel website. The study’s sample consisted of 30 students from X E. This research used a test as its instrument. The test consisted of 20 multiple types of questions. The calculation was done using SPSS v.23. The researcher used the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test for the paired test. The result shows the Asymp.Sig (W) value (0,000) < W table (critical values table) (0,05). As a result, the null hypothesis was rejected, and the alternative hypothesis was accepted, meaning the PQRST technique plus CJE project has been significantly effective towards students’ reading comprehension, with the result of effect size 2,45.

Abstract

This research is aimed at designing education comic strips as supplementary material in teaching modal verbs of obligation for "Bahasa Inggris Peminatan" to year-10 students of MAN 2 Pontianak. The method of this research was design and development research. The researcher applied ADDIE as the procedure. However, the researcher only implemented three phases, which were analyzing, designing, and developing (ADD) due to community activity restrictions enforcement. In the analyzing phase, the researcher interviewed the English teacher and observed the syllabus to get information about the students, and the teaching and learning situation. The results of the analysis found the cause of students' lack of understanding of the research subject. In the designing phase, the researcher observed the textbook and collected materials to design a significant product of education comic strips. The result is a concept map and prototype of the research product. In the developing phase, the researcher used "Comipo" to design the supplementary material for the students by combining the draft such as panels, characters, balloons, and effects. The final stage is a product that has been perfected, to then be validated. The researcher used expert validation to make sure the product is usable, with a score of 87%. In conclusion, it is found that education comic strips could assess the teaching of modal verbs of obligation

Abstract

This qualitative study aimed to investigate the underlying causes of English-Speaking anxiety experienced by third-year English education students at Universitas Tanjungpura when presenting academically. A descriptive approach was employed to identify these factors based on the self-reported experiences of high-anxiety students. Seven participants were selected through a preliminary questionnaire and were subsequently interviewed to gather in-depth data. Frequency distribution analysis was conducted to analyze the collected data. The findings revealed three primary factors contributing to speaking anxiety: communication apprehension, test anxiety, and fear of negative evaluation. Of these, communication apprehension emerged as the most significant factor, exerting a substantial influence on students' anxiety levels. Test anxiety and fear of negative evaluation also played notable roles in contributing to overall anxiety. These results highlight the multifaceted nature of English-Speaking anxiety and underscore the need for targeted interventions to address these specific factors and support students in overcoming their fears and developing effective communication skills.

Abstract

This research intended to determine the components of the scientific approach included in learning activities of the English textbook entitled Bahasa Inggris "Think Globally Act Locally". This study also described the kind of learning activities of the book that apply the scientific approach. This study belongs to qualitative descriptive research; therefore, the writer used an observation checklist as a technique of data collection and content analysis as the tool of data analysis. The findings showed that the English textbook Bahasa Inggris: "Think Globally Act Locally" has 95 learning activities throughout all book chapters that included components of the scientific approach, including observing, questioning, experimenting, associating, and communicating activities. The findings also showed the repetition and similarity of instruction in learning activities, including Reflecting and Communicating activities, through eleven book chapters. However, the writer argues that this book could be considered a good ELT textbook. However, it still needs improvement to make the learning activities more varied, especially reflection and communication.
