Abstract

First language plays an important role when it comes to learning second language. The process of first language interference in learning second language is called transfer. There are two classifications of transfer. The Positive transfer and negative transfer. This research was done to analyze the negative transfer of Indonesian into English of beginner students who learn English as foreign language. The method of the research was in qualitative descriptive study with the participants of grade-7 students in SMPN 01 Sungai Pinyuh in Academic Year 2021/2022. The data were collected by interviewing the participants and collecting worksheets from the participants. The researcher analyzed the data by using content analysis and transcription. The finding of the study showed that there were many errors made by the students that related to negative transfer and students tended not to realize that they were making mistakes. The results of this research were expected to be useful information for other teachers as a reference in teaching foreign languages and for other researchers with the same topic.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to found out the strategies applied by the English teacher in MAN 01 Kubu Raya. This research also has a purpose to identify how the teacher apply the strategies in the planning phase also in the implementation phase. The research is using descriptive qualitative method with observation and interview to collect the data. The subject of the research is one teacher in MAN 01 Kubu Raya. The research found the strategies that the teacher use is divided into two phase such as planning and implementation. In the planning, the teacher applying the strategies such as identifying situational factors, establishing learning goals, creating feedback and assessment procedures, choosing teaching or learning activities, and integration. In the implementation phase, the teacher used different strategies in teaching speaking and writing. In speaking, the teacher used discussion, simulations and role play, presentation, and question and answer with the addition of summarization, meanwhile, in teaching writing, the teacher used the strategies make a lesson visual, summarization, collaborative learning, modify vocabulary, sentence combining, study of models, and provide comprehensible input. This is showing that the teacher is using strategies in teaching English productive skills. The researcher concluded that the teacher strategy that had been used by one of the teachers at MAN 01 Kubu Raya already existed and the steps used by the teacher when teaching productive skills were very clear and could be found in the lesson plan and in the classroom.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to improve student’s reading comprehension of recount texts through the use of the Listen-Read-Discuss strategy to address issues that were discovered in the classroom. The eighth-graders in this study were focused on, particularly those in class VIII E, which included 30 students. Action research in the classroom was used for this study. An observation checklist, field notes, and tests were the tools utilized in collecting the data. The researcher combined qualitative and quantitative data to analyze the data and examined the observation checklist with field notes for qualitative data. Moreover, the researcher examined the test that was determined by the mean score for each cycle in qualitative data. Based on qualitative data, this research concluded that students' reading behavior in the classroom improved through the Listen-Read-Discuss teaching and learning process. The student's performance increased from the first cycle to the second cycle, as evidenced by the observation checklist and field notes. Quantitative data results also revealed an improvement in the students' reading comprehension mean scores from the first to the second cycles. Based on the result, the researcher advises teachers to use strategies to teach reading comprehension based on the findings provided in this research report. It can help students who have trouble comprehending the text to understand better and increase their comprehension of the material taught.

Abstract

This research was aimed to find out English speaking skill developments of exchange participant returnee from AIESEC global volunteer program and how this program can contribute in the participant’s speaking skill development in Universitas Tanjungpura Pontianak. This research used a case study research. To collect the data, the researcher used interview. The purpose of the study was to know what the developments of exchange participant returnee from AIESEC’s global volunteer program to know the contribution of AIESEC’s global volunteer program toward the student’s speaking skill development in Universitas Tanjungpura Pontianak. The researcher decided to conduct this research study into a student of English Language Education Study Program batch 2016 that have been returned from the AIESEC global volunteer program. The results revealed that the participant has some developments in English speaking skill such as pronunciation, fluency and vocabulary. In conclusion, this research study is produced positive finding regarding to the volunteer program that have been followed by the participant towards his English speaking skill.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the social and cognitive factors that influence students' achievement in using M-reader, a mobile reading application. The study was conducted using a descriptive quantitative design, which involves collecting and analyzing data to know the social and cognitive factors affecting students’ achievement, the level of affection and how the factors affect students’ achievement in using M-reader. The data were derived from online questionnaires and interviews. The study involved collecting data from thirty students from the Sociology study program who are using M-reader for their English subject. This study concluded there were several subfactors that included in the social and cognitive factors. The level of affection from social and cognitive factors were in the trend of high to highest. In addition, social and cognitive factors developed students’ awareness and help them in achieving certain number of words in using M-Reader. Keywords: social factors, cognitive factors, M-Reader.
