Abstract

This study aims to determine the relationship between social media and the argumentative paragraph writing skill of Politeknik Negeri Batam students. This study employs a descriptive method, with 70 students as the research subjects. In this study, students were asked to do a practice in the form of writing an argumentative paragraph. An analysis from the obtained data is then conducted to find out their mastery in composing a paragraph. As the basis for the assessment, scores in unity, coherence, and development aspect were assigned to each paragraph. These three aspects were then collected and summed up to find the mean of the data, which had been grouped and assigned score before, to determine their mastery level in writing an argumentative paragraph. Subsequently, the data were inserted into a table. Based on the table, which recapitulates the mastery level in writing an argumentative paragraph, the results are as follows: 43 % of the students have a high level of mastery, with 58 % of them having access to social media; 37 % of the students are in the medium level of mastery, with 28 % of them having access to social media; 20 % is in the low level of mastery, with 13 % of them having access to social media. The results of this study show that students who are active in social media have the ability to write a good argumentative paragraph. This might be due to the fact that activities in social media enhance their writing skill, which is closely related to the four aspects of language competencies, which consist of observing, reading, listening, and writing.

Abstract

In order to write an abstract that appeals to a broader audience, it is important to understand the vocabulary used in the context. By identifying words used in the abstracts of undergraduate thesis from Politeknik Negeri Batam students and comparing them with those used in other academic writings, this research attempts to show that developing student’s awareness of academic writing genre is critical for their progress. The data were taken from the abstract section of undergraduate thesis of Politeknik Negeri Batam students published in 2018, which were compiled into a corpus. From the corpus, the keywords and word profile would be identified, which could then be compared to other corpora. Two word lists (New General Service List and New Academic Word List) were selected as the level lists in carrying out word profiling during the analysis. The results show that the students lacked the necessary words and had not yet recognized the genre of academic writing.

Abstract

The English communication skill of people in Pasir Panjang in the context of tourism and trade is still inadequate. To support trade activities, English communication skill is required, especially for those who run business, such as traders as well as other service providers. For this reason, this community service activity was carried out in the form of training. The materials consists of an introduction to vocabulary and idiom commonly found in the context of tourism and trade activities. In this training, several learning media was used to increase participants' interest in learning. Through the delivery of English communication training, it is hoped that communication in English related to tourism and trade can take place more effectively. For the people of Pasir Panjang, an increased confidence level is another benefit that can be acquired through mastery of English, which is considered to hold high prestige by most Indonesians. From the activity that has been carried out, it can be concluded that the media are effective in the delivery of the material. This is evident from the opinion of most participants stating the media are interesting and helps them in learning English.

Abstract

Washing hands is something that is always urged to be done lately. This pandemic makes washing hands a habit that must be accomplished before and after doing activities. Automatic hand washing is one way to reduce the spread of the virus because it can be used without having to touch the device directly. The development of automatic tools for washing hands is the crucial need for an alternative power source that is fuel-efficient and uncomplicated in terms of maintenance. The eco-friendly electrical source is needed to be implemented to reduce the electricity bills such as using the solar panel as the alternative power source. As an effort to support handwashing activities, the procurement of solar panels as a source of electrical energy is expected to be able to provide simple solutions to prevent the spread of Covid -19 and to make the environment clean and energy-efficient.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic requires elementary and junior high school students to do online learning activities at home. In practice, children interact more often with their gadget during online school hours and outside these hours. Its a concern for most Graha Nusa Batam community residents because the children there are already starting to have symptoms of gadget addiction. Against this background, Batam State Polytechnic (Polibatam) held a robotics technology workshop program for children aged 8-15 years. This activity aims to increase children's understanding of robotics technology, which includes electronics and mechanics. In addition, this activity provides several benefits, namely: being an attractive alternative for children to reduce playing with their gadgets; provide children's experiences in problem solving, creativity and collaboration; and include field experience for Polibatam students by applying the knowledge gained through Project Based Learning (PBL) for the benefit of the community.This workshop held four meetings (March to April 2021) at the At-Taqwa Al-Qur'an Education Park (TPA) building, Graha Nusa Batam housing. The robot used is an analog line follower. Pre-test and post-test were conducted to measure the increase in participants' understanding of the material. This test shows that participants' knowledge of robotics technology can increase up to 25% for participants aged 8-11 years and 22% for 12-15 years.

Abstract

Conducting robotics training as a community service to improve basic knowledge of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) for students is one of the ways to improve their basic knowledge of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) for students is one of the most important aspects of the facing the industrial era 4.0 and society 5.0. Through the Service-Learning approach, this community service by collaborating with Granada International in Batam by involving 29 students, consisting of 7 students from class X, 15 students from class XI, and the rest from class XII, class XI students, and the rest from class XII. The results of mentoring through robotics training were able to increase the average STEM skills of students by 38.15%. In addition, the activity was successfully implemented with participant satisfaction levels above 50% for the subject matter, instructor, and training equipment. Only 17% of the trainees stated that the training time was insufficient, especially for practicum.

Abstract

One potential approach to addressing the challenges posed by the advent of Industry 4.0 and Society 5.0 is to offer robotics training. This endeavor aims to enhance students' foundational understanding of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) disciplines. The study involved collaborating with the Pondok Pesantren Granada, an Islamic Boarding School located in Batam, to provide robotics training as community service activities. The study included 29 trainees: 15 from class XI and 7 from classes X and XII. The teaching was conducted using a combination of didactic instruction, interactive discourse, and hands-on exercises. Trainees are administered a written examination to assess their proficiency level before and after the training program. The training outcomes exhibited a significant improvement in the mean STEM proficiency of trainees, with an increase of 38.15%. Furthermore, a series of activities have been effectively implemented, resulting in trainee satisfaction ratings exceeding 50% concerning course materials, trainer, and teaching equipment. A mere 17% of the individuals undergoing training expressed dissatisfaction with the allocated time, particularly the hands-on component's duration.

Abstract

Perkembangan zaman yang semakin canggih terhadap perangkat elektronik membuat perangkat elektronik banyak digunakan baik di industri maupun di rumah - rumah. Sering sekali masyarakat menggunakannya secara terus menerus dan tidak mengetahui berapa daya listrik yang telah digunakan sehingga menjadi pemborosan jika tidak diperhatikan. Salah satu cara agar dapat mengendalikan serta memantau penggunaan daya listrik yaitu menggunakan internet yang dikenal juga dengan istilah Internet of Things (IoT). Pada penelitian ini dibangun Sistem kendali dan pemantauan daya listrik dengan menggunakan protokol MQTT yang sistem ini bertujuan agar dapat mengendalikan dan memantau penggunaan daya listrik dari suatu perangkat listrik. Dengan menggunakan protokol MQTT, maka digunakannya publish-subscribe yaitu data dari sensor PZEM-004T sebagai publisher yang akan dikirim ke broker dengan menginisialisasikan sebuah topik yang diteruskan ke database dengan syarat topik harus juga sama dengan topik sebelumnya sehingga selanjutnya akan ditampilkan di sebuah web dan ketika daya listrik berlebihan maka akan ada notifikasi ke telegram pengguna untuk menonaktifkan beban tersebut. Dalam hal ini hasil yang didapatkan berupa arus, tegangan, dan daya dari sensor PZEM-004T memiliki rata-rata persentase error yang kecil sekitar 0 – 0,13% yang menunjukkan keakuratan pengukuran. Begitu juga dengan delay yang diperoleh antara alat terhadap Wi-Fi pada jarak tertentu cukup cepat sekitar 1 detik serta hasil pengendalian daya pada beban yang didapatkan ketika limit berlebih, status beban nonaktif yang diinfokan ke telegram user.

Abstract

Students need soft skills in dealing with the world outside of formal education. Soft skills as individual abilities are related to emotional and social intelligence that becomes an individual's character. The internalization of this character is in line with the objectives of Pancasila and Citizenship Education course in higher education level. The purpose of this study is to strengthen the soft skills of vocational students through the outdoor learning method. The study used mixed methods with data collection techniques include documentation, observation, interviews and questionnaires. The result shows that outdoor learning methods such as: learning in the field and outdoors, exercising, playing and campus maintenance can strengthen students' soft skills. In addition to these activities, students also get material in the syllabus and discuss current issues. The outdoor learning method is considered good and effective, with 53.8% students find this method agreeable, despite saying that there is still room for improvement. Keywords: soft skills, vocational education, outdoor learning methods, Pancasila and Civic Education ABSTRAK Keterampilan nonteknis (soft skill) adalah keahlian yang dibutuhkan mahasiswa ketika menghadapi dunia kerja. Keterampilan nonteknis sebagai kemampuan individu berhubungan dengan kecerdasan emosional dan sosial, sehingga keterampilan ini membentuk karakter bawaan individu. Pembentukan karakter ini sejalan dengan tujuan dari mata kuliah Pendidikan Pancasila dan Kewarganegaraan (PPKn) di tingkat perguruan tinggi. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menguatkan keterampilan nonteknis mahasiswa vokasi melalui metode pembelajaran luar ruangan. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode campuran (mixed methods) dengan tekhik pengumpulan data terdiri dari dokumentasi, observasi, wawancara dan juga kuesioner. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa pembelajaran melalui metode pembelajaran luar ruangan seperti belajar di lapangan dan alam terbuka, berolahraga, bermain, dan gerakan peduli kampus dapat menguatkan keterampilan nonteknis mahasiswa. Selain kegiatan tersebut, mahasiswa juga mendapatkan materi yang ada di Rancangan Pembelajaran Semester serta berdiskusi terkait isu-isu yang terjadi saat ini. Hasil kuesioner yang disebarkan kepada mahasiswa secara acak menunjukkan 53,8% setuju menggunakan metode outdoor learning ini; dengan demikian proses pembelajaran melalui metode ini termasuk dalam kategori baik. Abstract

Abstract Heat exchanger is a device used to transfer thermal energy between two or more fluids at different temperatures. This study aims to develop an efficient shell and tube heat exchanger design that is accompanied by an increase in the overall heat transfer coefficient on the shell and tube sides simultaneously. This study focuses on the impact of using helical baffles and twisted tape inserts technology on the total heat transfer coefficient (U) and pressure drop (ΔP). This study analyzes the effect of employing helical baffles on the shell side and twisted tape inserts on the tube side, with optimization using the Genetic Algorithm (GA) method. The independent variables considered include the helical baffles angle (β), the spacing between baffles (Lbc), the thickness of the twisted tape (δ), and the half-pitch of the twisted tape (H). The optimization objective function for both the shell side and tube side is to maximize the overall heat transfer coefficient, while the restriction is that the pressure drop must not surpass the starting design data value. In this study, the E-1-06 heat exchanger was successfully modeled. The modeling data showed only slight differences between the modeling results and the initial data sheet. The deviation value of the overrall heat transfer coefficient (U) = 0.06%, ∆Ps = 0.00%, and ∆Pt = 0.06%. Optimization of the E-1-06 heat exchanger was also successful. Optimization in this study was able to increase the U value by 3.97%, while the ∆Ps value decreased by -2.01% and ∆Pt by -19.11%. The findings indicate that the modified design is capable of enhancing thermal performance without compromising hydraulic efficiency, thereby demonstrating its potential for application in energy processing systems and industrial cooling.AbstrakHeat exchanger adalah perangkat yang digunakan untuk menyalurkan energi termal antara dua atau lebih fluida pada suhu yang berbeda-beda. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengembangkan desain heat exchanger shell dan tube yang efesien yang disertai dengan peningkatan koefisien perpindahan kalor secara keseluruhan pada sisi shell dan tube secara bersamaan. Penelitian ini berfokus pada dampak penggunaan teknologi helical baffles dan twisted tape insert pada koefisien perpindahan kalor total (U) dan penurunan tekanan/ Pressure drop (ΔP). Pada awalnya heat exchanger ini menggunakan teknologi segmental baffle pada sisi shell dan plain tube pada sisi tube, kemudian desainnya dimodifikasi dengan teknologi yang berbeda, desain pada sisi shell digunakan teknologi helical baffle sedangkan pada sisi tube digunakan teknologi twisted tape. Metode optimisasi yang digunakan adalah Genetic Algoritm (GA). Variabel bebas yang digunakan untuk melakukan optimisasi pada sisi shell adalah sudut helical baffle (ß) dan jarak antar baffle (Lbc) yang ada dalam heat exchanger. Sedangkan variabel bebas yang digunakan pada sisi tube adalah thickness of twisted tape (?), dan half pitch of twisted tape (H). Fungsi tujuan (objective function) optimisasi pada sisi shell dan sisi tube yaitu koefisien perpindahan panas secara keseluruhan (overrall heat transfer coefficient) yang maksimal dan constraint pada optimisasi ini yaitu penurunan tekanan (pressure drop) yang besar nilainya tidak boleh melampaui nilai dari data awal design. Pada penelitian ini heat exchanger E-1-06 berhasil dimodelkan. Data permodelan menunjukkan hanya sedikit perbedaan antara hasil permodelan dengan data sheet awal. Nilai deviasi overrall heat transfer coefficient (U) = 0.06%, ∆Ps=0.00%, dan ∆Pt= 0.06%. Optimisasi Heat exchanger E-1-06 juga berhasil dilakukan. Optimisasi pada penelitian ini mampu menaikan nilai U sebesar 3.97%, sementara nilai ∆Ps mengalami penurunan sebesar -2.01% dan ∆Pt sebesar -19.11%.
