Abstract

This study investigates the correlation between self-awareness and English-speaking ability among second-grade students at SMAN 3 Majene, Indonesia. Employing a quantitative correlational design, the research examined 17 students selected through cluster random sampling from a population of 51. Data were collected using a self-awareness questionnaire assessing emotional awareness, self-assessment, and self-confidence, alongside a speaking ability test. Results revealed high levels of self-awareness among participants, with most reaching the "permanent" level, indicating strong self-reflection capabilities. Speaking abilities were predominantly rated as "good." However, statistical analysis showed a weak correlation between self-awareness and speaking ability, challenging the assumption of a direct link between these variables. This finding suggests that while self-awareness may contribute to internal motivation, it does not automatically translate to enhanced speaking performance in this EFL context. The study highlights the need for comprehensive pedagogical strategies that complement self-awareness development with targeted language instruction to improve EFL speaking skills effectively.

Abstract

This study explores the English-speaking challenges and coping strategies of introverted learners in an Indonesian senior high school EFL context. Using a qualitative descriptive design, ten eleventh-grade students at SMAN 1 Wonomulyo were purposively selected based on a personality assessment identifying them as introverted. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, a speaking test, and questionnaires. The findings reveal that introverted students commonly face difficulties in speaking tasks due to fear of judgment, discomfort in group settings, hesitation in expressing ideas, and slow verbal processing. These psychological and linguistic barriers significantly affect their classroom participation and oral performance. However, the students also demonstrated adaptive strategies such as memorizing prepared texts, managing their preparation time effectively, and responding positively to motivational support from teachers and peers. Additionally, they expressed a preference for game-based and relaxed learning environments that reduce performance pressure. The study highlights the need for inclusive and responsive language teaching practices that cater to diverse learner personalities. It contributes to the growing understanding of how personality traits influence language learning and provides practical implications for fostering speaking confidence among introverted learners in EFL classrooms.

Abstract

Traditional teaching methods focused on imparting information often fail to optimize students' communicative abilities in second language acquisition, particularly English. This study explores the effectiveness of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) in enhancing language skills, including speaking, listening, reading, and writing. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed, utilizing observations and interviews with teachers and students in an English as a Second Language (ESL) learning context in Indonesia. Data collection focused on classroom dynamics, student-teacher interactions, and participants' experiences with CLT. The findings indicate that CLT positively impacts students’ language acquisition. Structured and supportive communication activities fostered significant improvements across all language domains. Students exposed to interactive and authentic communication exercises demonstrated enhanced confidence and proficiency in English. These results underscore the importance of integrating communication-focused methodologies in ESL education. The participatory nature of CLT encourages active engagement, enabling learners to apply language skills in real-life scenarios. Teachers reported that CLT activities also motivated students, promoting collaboration and practical use of language. This study highlights the efficacy of CLT in improving language skills and advocates for its broader adoption in teaching English as a second language in Indonesia. It suggests a shift from traditional, information-based methods to more dynamic, communication-centered approaches, emphasizing the value of student interaction in achieving language proficiency.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine the correlation between students' translation ability and their reading comprehension among eleventh-grade mathematics and science students at SMAN 1 Wonomulyo. This study used a quantitative approach, employing a correlational research design. The sample consisted of 36 students selected through a simple random sampling technique from a total population of 212 students. The study employed translation and reading tests as its primary instruments. The data analysis using SPSS indicated a two-tailed significance value of 0.069, which was greater than the standard 0.05 threshold. Additionally, the result obtained using the multiple correlation formula showed a value of 0.329 with 34 degrees of freedom. The correlation coefficient (r-value) was -0.306, which fell below the calculated threshold of 0.329. A t-test was conducted, yielding a t-value of 1.8741724, which was less than the critical t-table value (2.03224) with 34 degrees of freedom at a 0.05 level of significance. Based on the data analysis, the study concluded that the research hypothesis (Ha) suggesting a significant correlation between students' translation ability and reading comprehension was rejected, while the null hypothesis (H0) suggesting no significant correlation was accepted.
