Abstract

Based on interviews with the Ficusia animation team and professionals from Infinite Frameworks Studios, it was found that the lip and jaw movements in Ficusia were too fast, making them appear less realistic. This study aims to improve the quality of lip-sync animation in Ficusia using the viseme-based method, which allows for more natural lip and jaw movements. The viseme-based method was chosen because it is more suitable for 3D animation, producing smoother lip movements that are better integrated with facial expressions compared to the phoneme-based method, which tends to be rigid. A qualitative case study approach was conducted on the first episode of Ficusia, which contains scenes with predominantly human mouth shapes. Primary data were obtained through interviews with experienced animators and supervisors, while secondary data were gathered from literature. The results show that the viseme-based method can enhance the quality of lip-sync, create more natural animation, and improve the integration between lip movements and character expressions. This method is considered effective by professional animators and is expected to serve as a reference for producing realistic lip-sync in 3D animation.  Keywords: 3d animation; blender; lip-synch; viseme-based

Abstract

This study aims to optimize the quality of the 3D animated short film “Generate” by applying the pose-to-pose animation method supported by the effective use of reference videos. Previously, the animation was done using the straight-ahead technique, which was considered ineffective in highlighting key poses, timing, and arcs. Through an experimental qualitative approach, the animation was improved using the pose-to-pose method, which included analyzing reference videos to determine the correct key poses, breakdowns, and in-betweens. The resulting animation was then validated by professional animation practitioners based on aspects of timing, arcs, and overall visual quality. The findings showed a significant improvement in the clarity of the animation, arcs, and character poses. The pose-to-pose method is also considered effective for novice animators because it provides a more structured workflow to support staging and storytelling. However, challenges remain in the ability to accurately understand and apply references, requiring more in-depth training. This study offers a practical framework that can bridge the animation learning process in an academic environment with professional industry standards.

Abstract

The "Teens Go Green" education and competition aimed to raise teens' awareness of eco issues and their impact on their daily lives. It is designed with contests and seminars to provide an in-depth understanding of eco issues. The competition provided a practical opportunity on how to be sustainable and eco-friendly which will be the content of the video. This service activity started with an Animation Video Competition in September, which was participated by high schools/vocational schools in Batam City. There are 35 students who have uploaded animated video works. The animated videos sent by the participants then went through a judging stage by the committee, to assess visual creativity and content in delivering environmental campaigns. The activity continued with the screening of all registered works. And continued to the "Teens Go Green" educational seminar as well as the announcement of the winner of the Animation Video Competition, which was held on October 20, 2023, at the Technopreneur Building, Batam State Polytechnic Campus. In the educational seminar session, the guest speaker was the 2016 Batam Environmental Ambassador and World Clean Up Day Activist of Batam, Deviana Wistiasari, S.M., M.M.. She raised the topic of environmental issues for millennials, gen Z and the role of the media in it. The event was attended by students and college students in Batam City, and even some from schools in Tanjung Pinang.

Abstract

Environmental-friendly organic waste management is crucial for supporting sustainability, especially with the high volume of household waste. This community service project aims to educate the public, particularly the youth, about organic waste management through the use of eco enzyme technology. The education process involves eco enzyme practitioners and youth, facilitated by online-accessible video tutorials and social media campaigns to expand the reach of the information. Various activities, including socialization, education, and a challenge to create eco enzyme tutorial videos, were conducted to enhance participants' understanding and involvement. Evaluation through questionnaires completed by 156 respondents showed a significant increase in participants' knowledge regarding eco enzyme, its preparation methods, and benefits. The level of interest in using eco enzyme reached 94.23%, and the perceived benefits of the socialization process were 95.51%. Thus, this project successfully raised awareness and encouraged youth participation in sustainable organic waste management, which is expected to contribute positively to the environment in Batam City, Riau Island, Indonesia.

Abstract

The creation of a comic that tells the story of processing organic waste such as Eco-enzyme is one of the efforts to encourage sustainable behavior. Eco-enzyme is a liquid produced from the fermentation of organic kitchen waste such as vegetables, fruits, palm sugar, water, and other materials. The procedure involves mixing these ingredients in a tightly sealed container and allowing them to ferment for a certain period. Polibatam conducted a community service program aimed at increasing the knowledge of students at SMK Negeri 7 Batam regarding the production of Eco-enzyme, which is highly beneficial and serves as a solution for handling household waste. The number of students participating in this activity was around 120. During its implementation, lecturers from Politeknik Negeri Batam collaborated with the Eco-enzyme Indonesia Foundation team, focusing on socialization and hands-on training in Eco-enzyme production using pre-prepared materials. In practice, the students were actively involved and engaged in discussions with the team, accompanied by lecturers while working in their respective groups. To make the activity more engaging, an Eco-enzyme-themed comic created by Polibatam lecturers was also distributed and used as training media during the socialization. This activity served as a stimulus for students to become more creative in addressing current environmental issues. Through this program, it is expected that students - especially those from SMK Negeri 7 Batam will take concrete action in responding to environmental damage issues that can be addressed through creative approaches. Abstract

Indonesia has the most extensive mangrove ecosystem in the world, but its condition is worsening due to a lack of environmental awareness and outdated teaching approaches. This research intends to create the Propagul Journey educational animation using the 4D model, which includes Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate phases. During the Define stage, a knowledge gap was recognized and tackled using a "Show, Don't Tell" strategy in the Design phase. The Development phase incorporated parallax techniques to add depth, the Rubberhose 3 plug-in for flexible character animations, as well as Suno AI and Freesound for audio improvement. using an experimental design involving pre-test and post-test measurements within a single participant group. The findings indicated a notable increase in the participants' comprehension, rising from an average of 59. 2% to 83. 4%. Analysis shows that these outcomes strongly support the Define phase, where the visual and technical features designed effectively met the needs of the MAPALA audience. With a feasibility rating of 83. 4% deemed Very Valid, this animation successfully conveys complicated environmental topics in an understandable manner.
