Goats and sheep are the dominant ruminants in Banyumas Regency, Central Java. This study aimed to describe the population and development of goats and sheep in Banyumas Regency based on secondary data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS) for 2020–2023. Data were analyzed descriptively by calculating growth rates, shares, sex ratios, and changes in the number of animals slaughtered. The goat population was recorded at 175.835 head (2020), 181.112 (2021), and 184.734 (2022), while the sheep population was 17.269, 17.788, 18.144, and 18.969 head in 2020–2023. In 2022, goats and sheep made up 91,0% of the ruminant population by head count. Growth rates of goats and sheep were almost identical (about 3,0% in 2021 and 2,0% in 2022) with a nearly constant goat-to-sheep ratio (10,18), a pattern indicating that the figures may be estimates that need to be confirmed with the data provider. In 2023, the sheep population was 18.969 head, 71,2% of them female, and Wangon and Lumbir recorded the largest sheep numbers among the 11 subdistricts with readable data. The number of goats slaughtered increased from 27.005 (2019) to 32.628 head (2023), whereas sheep slaughtered decreased from 33.713 to 5.085 head. The 2023 goat population and data for all subdistricts were incomplete, so regional base analysis could not yet be performed.
