Abstract

ABSTRAKPelatihan English for Specific Purposes (ESP) merupakan salah satu kegiatan pengabdian Program Studi Sastra Inggris Universitas Dhyana Pura yang bertujuan memberikan pengetahuan ESP bagi masyarakat. Pada semester ini, kegiatan pengabdian dilaksanakan di Inna Bali Heritage Hotel dengan memberikan wawasan akan pentingnya penguasaan ESP bagi karyawan di hotel tersebut untuk memperlancar kinerja mereka dalam melayani tamu-tamu asing. Materi pelatihan yang diberikan khusus menyangkut keterampilan percakapan di 1) Kantor Depan yang meliputi bahasa Inggris untuk front office staff, food and beverages staff and house keeping staff. Tujuan dari kegiatan pelatihan ESP ini adalah untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbahasa Inggris karyawan Inna Bali Heritage Hotel Bali. Data diperoleh melalui pre-test dan post test. Dari hasil tes tersebut dapat disimpulkan bahwa terjadi peningkatan nilai yang diperoleh para karyawan sebelum dan setelah dilaksanakannya pelatihan ESP.Kata Kunci: ESP, Bahasa Inggris, Inna Bali Heritage HotelABSTRACTThe English for Specific Purposes (ESP) training is one of the activities of the English Literature Study Program at Dhyana Pura University which aims to provide ESP knowledge for the community. In this semester, this activity was held at Inna Bali Heritage Hotel by giving ESP knowledge to employees at the hotel to improve their performance in serving foreign guests. Training materials are focused on English conversation skills for front office karyawanf, food and beverage karyawanf and house keeping karyawanf. The purpose of ESP training activities is to improve the English language skills of Inna Bali Heritage Hotel Bali employees. Data were obtained through pre-test and post test. From the test results, it can be concluded that there is an increase in employee scores before and after ESP training is carried out.Keywords: ESP, English Language, Inna Bali Heritage Hotel

Abstract

ABSTRAKKegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat (PkM) selalu dilakukan setiap tahun sebagai pemenuhan salah satu kewajiban Tri Darma Perguruan Tinggi selain pendidikan dan penelitian. Namun, tahun ini kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat sedikit berbeda pelaksanaannya yaitu dengan pelaksanaan secara daring karena situasi yang tidak memungkinkan untuk bertemu dan tatap muka dengan peserta pelatihan akibat menyebarnya virus COVID-19. Kegiatan Pelatihan English Basic Skills bagi siswa SMK Pariwisata Harapan ini akan dilakukan 4 kali pada bulan Juli-September 2020 dengan menyasar siswa kelas X SMK Pariwisata Harapan sebanyak 25 siswa. Tujuan dari kegiatan pelatihan ini untuk (1) mempromosikan prodi Sastra Inggris, (2) meningkatkan keterampilan dasar bahasa Inggris siswa yang meliputi kemampuan berbicara (speaking), mendengarkan (listening), menulis (writing), dan membaca (reading). Media google classroom digunakan dalam pelatihan ini untuk memudahkan komunikasi dan meminimalkan kemungkinan kendala internet saat live. Para peserta akan mendapat waktu lebih banyak untuk mempelajari materi dan juga bisa mendengarkan berulang kali karena materi yang akan diberikan berupa powerpoint dengan rekaman suara pengajar. Abstract

ABSTRAKTujuan dari kegiatan pelatihan ini untuk (1) mempromosikan prodi Sastra Inggris, (2)meningkatkan productive skills bahasa Inggris siswa dan (3) mengenalkan wawasan lebihkhusus terkait dengan Productive Skills kepada siswa kelas XI dan XII. Productive skillsdilakukan dengan memproduksi bahasa inggris melalui kegiatan speaking dan writing.Kegiatan ini mengajak siswa melatih kemampuan berbicara bahasa Inggris (speaking)melalui pembuatan video berdurasi 1 menit yang dilakukan langsung sesaat setelahdiberikan materi dan instruksi dengan topik mendeskripsikan ibu masing-masing baik fisikmaupun kepribadiannya. Kegiatan tersebut dilakukan untuk menstimulasi produksi bahasadan melatih pengetahuan bahasa inggris siswa seperti pengetahuan kosakata adjektiva dantata bahasa sesuai tense. Selain itu, dalam kegiatan ini pengajar juga mengajak siswamelakukan kegiatan menulis bahasa Inggris (writing) yaitu menulis “greeting card” untukmenyambut hari Ibu. Abstract

ABSTRAKTujuan kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat dengan mengajarkan English Spesific Purposes (ESP) di SMK Wira Harapan ini untuk (1) mempromosikan prodi Sastra Inggris, (2) meningkatkan kemampuan berbahasa Inggris lisan yang akan membantu performa terutama dalam pelayanan dengan komunikasi lisan yang memadai dan (3) mengenalkan wawasan lebih khusus terkait standar bahasa Inggris hospitality dan sopan santun berbahasa. Kegiatan ini menyasar siswa kelas XII untuk mempromosikan prodi Sastra Inggris melalui latihan menjawab soal listening bahasa Inggris sebagai persiapan Ujian Nasional, sedangkan siswa kelas XI jurusan akomodasi perhotelan (AP) diajarkan ESP. Pre-tes memperlihatkan kemampuan siswa tentang pelafalan alfabetis, menyatakan jam, berbicara dengan past tense dan future, penguasaan kosa kata, dan juga penggunaan can and may yang berhubungan dengan kesantunan perlu ditingkatkan. Hasil pelaksanaan kegiatan ini adalah meningkatnya pemahaman siswa dalam penggunaan bahasa yang santun dalam request dan permission, mampu menyatakan waktu, menguasai past tense dan future tense, dan penambahan kosakata bahasa inggris sesuai bidang.Kata kunci: English Spesific Purposes, Hospitality, SMK, Pengabdian kepada MasyarakatABSTRACTThe purpose of this community service is to teach English Spesific Purposes (ESP) in SMK Wira Harapan for (1) promoting English Literature Department, (2) improving English speaking ability that will help performance especially in service with proper oral communication skil, and (3) introducing broader insight relating standard hospitality English and its courtesy. This activity targets the third grade students to promote English Literature Department by practicing listening test as preparation of national exam, while the second grade students that major Hotel accommodation get ESP materials. Their Pre-tests show that their abilities of alphabet, telling time, using past tense and future, vocabularies, and can or may use relating courtesy and English hospitality are needed to develop. The result of this activity is there is improvement for student’s comprehension about courtesy particularly in asking request and permission, be able to tell time, past tense and future tense use, and adding more vocabularies accord to their divisions.Keywords: English Specific Purposes, English, Hospitality, Vocational High School, Community Service

Abstract

In pragmatic research, conversations or utterances are important things to pay attention to because the speakers' use of language has an impact. Interestingly, the communication that we do usually does not necessarily follow the rules of maxims so we get the result of violating the rules of maxims. This study analyzed the detailed factor of violation and flouting of maxims which affect the way people communicate on a daily basis which are quietly violating to misleading, opting out, clashing, and flouting. This study utilized the qualitative method with the total of 17 data combined on each of the maxims acquired through the movie The Adam Project and analyzed by utilizing the theory of Cooperative Principle and Maxims. The results indicated that data about all types of maxim are found and for quantity and relation maxims, both are mostly violated by quietly violating to reach misleading purposes whereas quality and manner tend to be flouted to create conversational implicature, which the hearer should make an effort to understand the utterance

Abstract

AbstrakImplikatur percakapan tidak hanya ditemukan dalam percakapan lisan, tetapi juga dapat ditemukan dalam percakapan tertulis seperti dalam karya sastra seperti novel. Seperti dalam novel karya Dr. James R. Doty yang berjudul Into the Magic Shop: A Neurosurgeon's Quest to Discover the Mysteries of the Brain and the Secrets of the Heart, pengarang banyak menyisipkan percakapan yang mengandung implikatur percakapan yang dapat dikenali melalui konteksnya. diceritakan dalam cerita. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan jenis implikatur percakapan yang digunakan oleh tokoh novel Into the Magic Shop karya Dr. James Robert Doty yang diterbitkan pada tahun 2016 oleh Avery New York. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan metode note--taking. Penelitian dilakukan dengan menggunakan pendekatan deskriptif-kualitatif. Pendekatan deskriptif-kualitatif digunakan untuk menampilkan fenomena kebahasaan yang terdapat dalam novel dan mengamati ekspresi ujaran yang disampaikan dalam novel Into the Magic Shopyang diinterpretasikan dengan menggunakan deskripsi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan, dari 27 implikatur percakapan yang ditemukan, 5 ujaran dikategorikan ke dalam implikatur percakapan umum, 14 ujaran menjadi implikatur berskala, dan 8 ucapan termasuk dalam implikatur percakapan khusus. Jenis implikatur yang dominan ditemukan adalah implikatur berskala karena novel ini adalah kisah hidup penulis (Dr. Doty) yang mempelajari keterampilan dan sebagian besar menggunakan skala untuk mengekspresikan topik tuturan.Kata kunci: Implikatur percakapan, Pragmatik, Novel, Into the Magic Shop, Ke Dalam Toko SulapAbstractConversational implicature not only found in oral conversation, but it also can be found in writen conversation such as in literary works like novel. As in the novel by Dr. James R. Doty entitled Into the Magic Shop: A Neurosurgeon's Quest to Discover the Mysteries of the Brain and the Secrets of the Heart, the author inserts many conversations that contain conversational implicatures that can be recognized through the context narrated in the story. This study aims to find the type of conversational implicature used by the novel’s character. The data was taken from Into the Magic Shop novel by Dr. James Robert Doty that published on 2016 by Avery New York. There are conversations found that contains conversational implicature. The data collected using the note-taking method. The study was conducted using descriptive-qualitative approach. A descriptive-qualitative approach used because it describes the linguistic phenomena found in the novel and observed the utterance expression conveyed in the Into the Magic Shop novel that interpreted using description. The result shows, from 27 conversational implicature found, 5 utterances categorized into generalized conversational implicature, 14 utterances into scalar implicature, and 8 utterances into particularized conversational implicature. The dominant type is scalar implicature as this novel is a life story of the author (Dr. Doty) who learn a skill and mostly used scale to express the topic of the utterances.Keywords: Conversational Implicature, Pragmatics, Novel, Into the Magic Shop

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to determine the types of homonymous words and the meaning of each type of homonymous word in the top 5 Tongue twister English- learn English with English class on the YouTube channel Learning English. The data was analyzed using Parera's (2004) theory. The research design is qualitative, and the data sources for this investigation are the homonyms that appear within the tongue twister. According to the data, there are two types of homonyms: homophones and homographs. There are ten homophones on the video, two in each tongue twister, while there is only one homograph in the "if two witches were to watch two watches, which one would they watch?" tongue twister. It can be concluded that homophones shape the majority of homonyms. Understanding homonym and homograph usage and distinctions in tongue twisters and also to improve the use of pronunciation is the objective of this research

Abstract

Children's stories, especially Balinese stories, are one of the effective media to provide environmental education to children and introduce their mother tongue or regional language as early as possible as a form of language preservation. In addition, the introduction of stories to children from an early age will have an impact on children's love of literacy. This research analyses the environmental lexicon from an ecolinguistics perspective found in Balinese children's stories. This research aims to identify biological, sociological, and ideological aspects of Balinese children's stories. This is qualitative research, the data was taken from a Balinese children’s story entitled Pasawitran I Jangkrik Teken I Petani. The result shows that children can learn some environmental and farming-based lexicons in this story, which is very good and necessary for language preservation. Ideologically, children are invited to understand the importance of environmental protection and ecological balance. By applying these sociological aspects in the story Pasawitran I Jangkrik Teken I Petani children can learn about social dynamics, tradition, and social systems

ABSTRAK       Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan relasi makna antarleksikal berkenaan dengan tanaman bambu dalam bahasa Bali dan penggunaan praksis sosial sebagai lingkungan bahasaterkait dengan keseimbangan hidup. Data penelitian ini adalah data lisan dan data tertulis sebagai data pendukung. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif dengan pendekatankualitatif. Data dikumpulkan dengan pengamatan mendalam dan wawancara serta dibantu dengan teknik catat dan rekam. Dari penelitian ini diperoleh hasil, yaitu ditemukan meronimidan taxonomi hiponim bambu dalam bahasa Bali dan leksikon terkait terbentuk dari praksis sosial yang membangkitkan sifat ekologis manusia untuk upaya pelestarian.Kata kunci: ekolinguistik, relasi makna, bambu, bahasa Bali ABSTRACT The aim of this research is to find the semantic relation between lexicons of tiing „bamboo‟ inBalinese and to know social praxis usage as a language environment which is linked to life balance. The collected data are spoken data and written data as supporting data. Thisresearch is explained descriptively and is conducted with qualitative approach. It is collected by observation and depth interview, and also is assisted by recording and note takingtechniques. Abstract

Literature and social life have a close relationship. Many writers express ambiguous emotions when observing their surroundings. Society is a mixture of the upper and lower classes. Due to the imbalance of wealth, the lower classes often experience different fates in life, while the upper classes enjoy the benefits. Karl Marx has pointed out this social injustice in his theory. This research is an attempts to find elements of Marxism related to social inequalities in the poem "Caged Bird" by Maya Angelou. This study uses the text analysis method through the lens of Karl Marx's propositions about the behavior of the lower or marginalized social class in facing the severity of life. This research is a qualitative research that uses descriptive text analysis methods to explore the social and economic dimensions hidden in the text. In this study, Using a Marxist approach, this research seeks to uncover the layers of meaning contained in each line of the poem, highlighting the sharp contrast between the upper class and the marginalized class. Thus, this view states that how economic forces create inequalities and make life difficult for the lower classes. The poem challenges readers to consider the impact
