Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) is a crucial aspect in ship operations, particularly on deck where the risk of work accidents is relatively high. The use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) by deck crew is essential to prevent injuries and maintain safe working conditions. This study aims to identify factors causing the low implementation of PPE usage, its impacts, and the efforts required to improve compliance on board KMP. Titian Nusantara. This research used a descriptive qualitative method conducted during the sea practice period on board KMP. Titian Nusantara. Primary data were obtained through observation and semi-structured interviews with deck crew, Bosun, and Chief Officer. Secondary data were collected from ship documents, safety procedures, and relevant literature. Data analysis was carried out using Fish Bone Analysis to identify the root causes of low PPE implementation. The results show that low PPE usage is influenced by limited understanding, work habits, low motivation, inconsistent work methods, inadequate PPE condition, hazardous work environment, and lack of supervision. Improvement efforts include safety training, stronger supervision, procedural improvements, and proper provision and maintenance of PPE.

This community service was held in response to the initial finding that Maritime English instruction at SMK Negeri 10 Padang remains hampered by a lack of textbooks aligned with IMO Model Course 3.17, limited teacher training, and students’ insufficient mastery of navigational terminology. The project introduced and disseminated the textbook Maritime English for Navigational Watch Officers developed according to IMO, SMCP, technical terminology, formative exercises, a glossary, and supporting visual resources. A participatory outreach methodology was employed, comprising presentations, group discussions, maritime communication simulations, and a practicality questionnaire. This event took place on 21 July 2025 in the school prayer hall, with participants including Poltekpel Sumbar team, SMK Negeri 10 Padang’s teachers, teaching staff, and students. Quantitative results indicated average “Yes” practicality scores of 70 % from 17 teachers and 83 % from 40 students, particularly regarding ease of use, engaging design, and support for independent learning; concerns remained over textbook ownership and the potential to replace teacher presence. Qualitative feedback underscored the need for online modules, a translated edition, audio–video content, and field visits to Poltekpel Sumbar. The discussion highlights the effectiveness of bilingual instruction, scaffolding, dialogic teaching, and experiential learning in enhancing navigational watch officer competencies. Pedagogical implications include enriching contextual and interactive media; institutional implications stress the importance of formal MoUs, sustainable funding, and local cadre teams; strategic implications advocate for additional ESP maritime titles and digital platforms. The project is envisioned as a replicable model for vocational collaboration to bolster graduate competitiveness in the global shipping industry.

The captain is the highest leader on board a ship who plays an important role in managing, directing, and supervising all operational activities of the ship. In order for the work process to run optimally, a leadership style that can effectively encourage the performance of the crew is needed. This study aims to analyze the captain's leadership style and how it supports the performance of crew members during the execution of tasks on the MV Kairos Jaya 8 ship. This study used a qualitative descriptive method with data collection techniques in the form of observations made by the researcher during the study, interviews conducted with the captain, chief officer, and crew, as well as supporting documentation obtained during the researcher's PRALA implementation on MV Kairos Jaya 8. Data analysis was carried out using Fish Bone Analysis to identify the root causes The results of research conducted during sea practice (PRALA) show that the captain's leadership style greatly affects the quality of crew work, especially in terms of communication, discipline, and completion of daily tasks. It was found that inconsistency in giving instructions, lack of a persuasive approach, and poor two-way communication can lead to delays in work and decreased crew motivation. Conversely, when the captain applies a more democratic and supportive leadership style, the crew shows a significant improvement in performance, as seen in the accuracy of task execution and increased coordination among crew members

In maritime education, lecturer performance faces unique challenges because lecturers are expected not only to deliver academic instruction but also to support competency-based training, safety culture, discipline, and industry-aligned professional standards. This study is grounded in the importance of lecturer performance as a key determinant of higher education quality, particularly in maritime education, which requires strong professionalism, resilience, and academic commitment. The study aims to examine the effect of campus climate on lecturer performance with visionary leadership and spiritual intelligence as mediating variables among lecturers at Politeknik Pelayaran Sumatera Barat, Politeknik Ilmu Pelayaran Semarang, and Politeknik Pelayaran Barombong. A quantitative causal design was employed through a survey of 149 lecturers selected using total sampling. The data were analyzed using SEM-PLS with SmartPLS 3 to test validity, reliability, path coefficients, and mediation effects. The findings reveal that campus climate has a positive and significant effect on lecturer performance, visionary leadership, and spiritual intelligence. In addition, both visionary leadership and spiritual intelligence have positive and significant effects on lecturer performance. The results also indicate that visionary leadership and spiritual intelligence significantly mediate the influence of campus climate on lecturer performance. These findings suggest that lecturer performance is shaped not only by a supportive work environment but also by future-oriented leadership and the strengthening of individual spiritual capacity. The study provides practical implications for maritime education institutions in designing policies for competency development, discipline-based work culture, leadership training, and continuous performance improvement that are aligned with maritime education standards and institutional safety values.

This study aims to examine the effects of rewards, work–life balance, and coworker support on employee job satisfaction. Employing a quantitative design with independent samples t tests, the research population comprised all employees of Politeknik Pelayaran Sumatera Barat in 2025 (150 persons), with a purposive sampling technique based on percentage to select respondents. So, the pilot sample is 37 persons, and the research sample is 113 persons. A structured questionnaire was used to measure the variables of recognition, work–life balance, coworker support, and job satisfaction, and data were analyzed using SPSS. The findings reveal that rewards, work–life balance, and coworker support significantly influence job satisfaction (t-calculated > t-critical; 21.849, 14.508, 21.991 > 1.66). Rewards also impact work–life balance, which in turn affects coworker support, although they do not directly influence it. Implications of this research suggest that implementing a structured reward system can be an effective strategy to enhance job satisfaction in vocational education settings. Future studies are advised to employ mixed methods designs and broaden the sample to multiple institutions to verify and generalize these results. It is recommended that the management of Politeknik Pelayaran Sumatera Barat develop and implement integrated reward programs and flexible work policies to optimize employee well-being and productivity.

This research started from the problem of the current Covid-19 pandemic condition and situation, which makes cadets have to study online and most by themselves. In addition, it is based on the fact that there has been no specific module discussing basic terms or maritime English vocabulary specifically for each department. The purpose of this study is to reveal whether there is an effect of using the maritime English vocabulary for beginners module on the vocabulary learning outcomes and how effective the use of the module is for cadets of Batch V Nautical Department, Shipping Polytechnic, West Sumatra. This type of research is experimental with the one-group pre-test and post-test design (pre-experimental design). This research was carried out in all classes of the nautical department Batch V, which consisted of 3 categories; Nautical A, Nautical B, and Nautical C. The sample used purposive sampling in this research, so the writer only took cadets in nautical majors, with a total sample of 60 persons. Based on the results, it was found that there was an effect of using the maritime English vocabulary for beginners module on the learning outcomes of maritime English vocabulary for Nautical Department cadets Batch V. Furthermore, from the results of questionnaire data processing, it can be concluded that the use of maritime English vocabulary for beginners module in maritime English vocabulary learning is effective for Nautical Department cadets Batch V in West Sumatra Merchant Marine Polytechnic in 2021.
