Abstract

Abstract

Indonesia is uniquely positioned among the countries in the world where most of the land consists of tropical forests. Besides Haiti and the Bourbon Pacific, Indonesia is among the three largest producers of vetiver oil in the world. Garut Regency is the center of vetiver oil production in Indonesia. Vetiver root (Vetiveria zizanoides L. Nash), is known to contain terpenoid compounds that have antioxidant bioactivity, especially ?-vetivena, ?-vetivenon, and ?-vetivenon compounds. Phytochemical screening is a way to determine the content of secondary metabolites in a natural material. This study aims to determine the content of secondary metabolites in vetiver essential oil from Garut Regency. This research is qualitative in nature using a descriptive design of laboratory experiment method. The vetiver essential oil produced by the steam distillation method was tested for secondary metabolite content using thin-layer chromatography by looking at the stains that appeared on the chromatogram and the Rf value of the tested compounds. Secondary metabolite compounds tested include alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, steroids, terpenoids, and saponins. Vetiver essential oil contains steroid compounds characterized by the onset of blue stains with an Rf of 0.9 and terpenoid compounds characterized by the onset of bright blue stains with an Rf of 0.54.

Abstract

Oral infections remain a significant public health problem in Indonesia, with dental caries being highly prevalent and primarily associated with Streptococcus mutans. The use of modern antibiotics for caries treatment often leads to side effects and bacterial resistance, prompting the search for herbal-based alternatives. Red ginger (Zingiber officinale var. rubrum) contains bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, phenols, gingerol, shogaol, and essential oils, which are known for their antibacterial activity. This study aimed to evaluate the inhibitory effect of red ginger infusion on the growth of S. mutans. A Posttest Control Group design was employed, and antibacterial activity was assessed using the disk diffusion method. Treatments consisted of a negative control (distilled water), a positive control (ciprofloxacin 5 µg), and red ginger infusion (RGI) at concentrations of 10%, 20%, and 40%. Results demonstrated an increase in inhibition zone diameter with higher concentrations of RGI. The negative control produced no inhibition, while the positive control showed the largest inhibition zone (45.05 mm). RGI at 10% yielded 7.91 mm (p=0.408), 20% yielded 14.81 mm (p=0.066), and 40% yielded 23.05 mm (p=0.022). Only the 40% concentration showed a statistically significant difference compared to the negative control (p<0.05). These findings indicate that red ginger infusion possesses antibacterial activity against S. mutans, although its effectiveness is still below that of ciprofloxacin. Therefore, red ginger may be considered as a potential herbal alternative for dental caries prevention, particularly as a supportive therapy. Further studies are required to isolate active compounds and develop more effective topical formulations.

Abstract

Abstract

Palm sugar is one of the processed food products sourced from the processing of sap water from the male flower bunches of the palm tree. Garut Regency is one of the cities for producing palm sugar and ant sugar in Indonesia which is growing rapidly. To improve the quality of palm sugar and ant sugar in Garut Regency, it is necessary to test the palm sugar and ant sugar products according to the characteristics of the quality requirements of the Indonesian National Standardization Agency (BSN), namely SNI 01-3743-199. So that it can compete with palm sugar and ant sugar products from other regions. The purpose of this community service is to maintain the quality and authenticity of palm sugar, by educating craftsmen about palm sugar with Indonesian national standard quality, so that it can be exported. The results of chemical and physical testing of palm sugar, the original product from arrowroot, can meet the quality standards according to SNI 01-3743-199.

Abstract

Medicinal plants are very beneficial for health, thus reducing the impact of using drugs pharmacologically. Increasing public awareness to reduce and stop using chemical drugs encourages people to use natural ingredients that are around. The purpose of this community service is to provide education to students to utilize their yards in growing medicinal plants at home. The method used is: counseling and empowerment in planting medicinal plants in school yards. From this community service activity, it can be concluded that 95% of students who attended and took part in community service activities could understand the presentation of the substance given by the presenters, namely the D3 Pharmacy Lecturer team. Second, after the presentation of the material, knowledge about "The Benefits of Medicinal Plants in the Family Environment and Land Use in the Elementary School Environment" increased. Third, the enthusiasm of SD Al Khoiriyah IV Garut students when asking questions was very good, showing that this substance was interesting enough to be discussed.
