Abstract

In Islamic teachings, Muslims are encouraged to make efforts (ikhtiar) in facing various challenges, including when experiencing illness. Self-medication is one form of ikhtiar that is carried out independently to treat mild symptoms using over-the-counter or limited over-the-counter medicines. Rational drug use is key to ensuring the safety and effectiveness of treatment. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines rational drug use as the provision of medicines according to the patient's clinical needs, in the right dose and duration, and at an affordable cost. for Muslims, in addition to rationality, the halal aspect is also an important consideration in the use of medicines. The halal-thayyib principle, as explained in the Qur'an Surah Al-Baqarah verse 168, emphasizes the importance of choosing medicines that are not only safe and effective but also halal. however, the public's level of knowledge about the halal status of medicines is still relatively low. education about halal medicines is highly necessary, especially among Muslims, to increase awareness and understanding. this study aims to determine the level of public knowledge regarding the rational use of medicines based on sharia principles in self-medication practices. the method used is descriptive with a questionnaire instrument distributed directly to respondents. the results show that the majority of respondents understand the concept of rational drug use and prefer to obtain medicines from pharmacies and doctors. in terms of sharia, the understanding of the halal and haram concept in medicines is relatively high, but awareness of ingredients such as gelatin and alcohol remains low. therefore, more intensive education on the halal aspects of medicine use is needed so that Muslims can be more selective in accordance with Islamic law.     Ask ChatGPT

Abstract

Clay masks are cosmetic formulations designed to adhere closely to the skin, effectively lifting contaminants, cleansing the face, and absorbing impurities. We made a clay mask containing active ingredients such as niacinamide, alpha arbutin, ceramide, and hyaluronic acid. A careful selection of ingredients is essential for ensuring safety and mitigating potential dermatological issues. This study aimed to evaluate the physical characteristics, stability, primary irritation potential, and moisturizing efficacy of this clay mask formulation. Kaolin and bentonite are the primary base materials. The research included formulation optimization and physical stability testing using a cycling test, where each cycle was conducted over a 24-hour period for a total of six cycles. Evaluations were performed on organoleptic properties, homogeneity, pH, spreadability, viscosity, and drying time. Subsequently, data were analyzed using paired sample T-tests. Antioxidant activity was assessed using the ABTS method to determine IC50 values. Both preclinical and clinical irritation tests were performed, and the clinical efficacy of the moisturizer was evaluated in 30 participants. The optimal formula consisted of 0.8% kaolin and 0.2% bentonite, and all the evaluation parameters met the required standards. Stability testing and percentage inhibition measurements revealed no significant differences during storage (p>0.05). The formulation demonstrated strong antioxidant activity (IC50<50) and showed no irritation in preclinical or clinical irritation tests. The efficacy results indicated that the developed clay mask formulation has significant potential as a safe and effective skin moisturizer.

Abstract

Using ingredients in cosmetic serum formulation necessitates meticulous consideration to mitigate potential pharmaceutical and clinical issues, and guarantee their safety for application. Xanthan gum functions as a gelling agent, while sodium metabisulfite is an additional antioxidant capable of enhancing formulation viscosity. This research aimed to ascertain the optimal formula's physical characteristics, stability, and irritation potential. The optimal formula was derived through the utilization of the Simple Lattice Design. Physical characterization encompassed parameters such as pH, viscosity, organoleptic properties, adhesion, spreadability, and homogeneity. Stability testing involved a cycling test performed over 24 hours for six cycles under cold and hot temperatures. Subsequently, an analysis was conducted using the paired t-test. In-vitro primary irritation testing was carried out using rabbits and volunteers. The optimal formula was identified to consist of 0.66% xanthan gum and 0.34% sodium metabisulfite, exhibiting favorable physical quality and meeting the requisite standards. The stability testing results revealed that sig. values <0.05 indicated storage temperature's influence on viscosity enhancement while it did not influence pH with sig. values <0.08. The outcomes of the primary irritation test yielded values of 0, signifying the absence of erythema and edema in both rabbits and volunteers. In conclusion, the optimal formula derived from this study exhibits commendable characteristics, stability, and non-irritating attributes, rendering it safe for application.

Abstract

Acne vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory disease of the pilosebaceous follicles that affects more than 80% of adolescents and young adults. Conventional therapies such as antibiotics and topical retinoids have limitations in the form of resistance and irritation. Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) from green tea leaves (Camellia sinensis L.) has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activities that make it a safe natural anti-acne candidate. The aim of this study was to assess the clinical efficacy and safety of topical EGCG cream on the improvement of inflammatory and non-inflammatory acne lesions. A pre-post clinical trial was conducted on ten participants aged 17–50 years with active acne. Respondents applied 6% EGCG cream twice daily for six months. The number of lesions (papules, pustules, and blackheads) was evaluated monthly and analyzed using a paired t-test (p<0.05). There was a significant decrease in the number of papules (9.4 ± 5.97 to 3.0 ± 3.13), pustules (1.7 ± 1.57 to 0), and comedones (21.5 ± 10.76 to 4.2 ± 3.05) in five months (p<0.05), with the onset of improvement since the first month without side effects. Topical EGCG cream is effective and safe in reducing acne lesions quickly and sustainably. With its multi-target mechanism, EGCG has the potential to be developed as a phytocosmetic active ingredient for acne vulgaris therapy.
